Phil Mickelson nearly makes history, having a putt for 62 lip out on 18!! Still, Phil the Thrill shoots a bogey-free 63 and currently leads the Open at -8!

Patrick Reed, Zach Johnson, and Martin Kaymer are tied for 2nd at -5. Rory McIlroy is at -2, and Jordan Spieth is even.

Great news about Phil, hope he can keep it going.

I'm not too happy with McIlroy and Spieth right about now. The top four ranked players all pulled out of the Olympics. At least Johnson and Day have children, while McIlroy is engaged. Spieth has no such excuse. And McIlroy made some very ill-advised statements yesterday, saying he plays only to win and not grow the sport, and that he wouldn't bother to watch golf at Rio, instead watching track and swimming, the sports "that matter." Really disappointing. The "big four" have reinforced the stereotypes about golf not being a sport and that it's populated by rich prima donnas.

Too bad that last putt didn't drop for Phil. He would have had the record alone and it would last a long time. Damn putt lipped out too. Mickelson's high level of play at his age sure is a sharp contrast to the collapse of that other guy. What was his name, the colored fellow?

Phil retains the lead after shooting a 2 under 69 in the 2nd round! He's leading by one at -10 over Henrik Stenson, who had a great round today. Following them are Soren Kjeldsen and Keegan Bradley at -7, then Zach Johnson at -5. Phil had a pretty good round today; I'm hoping he'll be able to keep up his play going into the weekend, and get his 2nd Open win, as well as his 6th major overall.

Some notables behind the leaders are: Sergio Garcia at -4, Martin Kaymer at -3, Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson at -2, Rickie Fowler at -1, Jason Day at +1, with Jordan Spieth and Bubba Watson at +4.

Phil and Henrik Stenson went head to head in the final pairing today and separated themselves from the rest of the field. They'll go mano a mano again tomorrow in the final round.

As with Roger Federer in tennis, one wonders how many more opportunities Phil will have to win another major. This could be his last, best chance. But Stenson is at the top of the list of "best players never to have won a major," and at 40 years old this could be his last, best chance as well. It's setting up to be a great final round.

I'm really hoping Phil will win tomorrow. Nothing against Stenson, but Phil has been one of my favorite players for a while, and it would be great to see him add another Open Championship to his resume. It should be a great duel between these two, with only Bill Haas and Andrew Johnston in striking distance (6 and 7 shots behind Stenson, respectively). I wouldn't be mad if Stenson won, but I'd love to see Phil win again. Go Phil!!

McIlroy didn't help himself today either. He smashed his three wood into the ground after a bad shot, breaking the head off, looking a lot like Tiger in the process. With his previous statements from Don's post, I guess I don't care too much he's out of contention right now.

I'm watching Golf Channel's Live from the Open coverage right now, and (((Rich Lerner))) as usual is semi-subtlely showing his anti-White bias. First, when there was a shot of Mickelson and Stenson walking together, Lerner referred to them as "lumbering." Later he said, "They say the heavyweight division of boxing is dead, but these two giants will be throwing some haymakers tomorrow."

That's just two examples of the many hundreds if not thousands of ways the Narrative can be steered, by what is said or not said and what tone and facial expression is used, what footage is shown and from what angles, etc., etc. Lerner is a past master of all the tricks while posing as an objective observer.

What a day!! Henrik Stenson shoots a 63 to outlast Phil Mickelson, who shot 65, to win by three, -20 to -17. What performance by these two guys today!! Mickelson didn't make a bogey today, but still came up short. Stenson also bests Tiger Woods' mark of -19 in an Open Championship.

Best final round duel I've ever seen! Phil played great, in fact it was probably the best major he's ever played, but Stenson played one of the very best final rounds in a major ever, shooting 63. They crushed the rest of the field, similar to the Duel in the Sun between Watson and Nicklaus at the '77 Open. I've seen highlights of that match, but this one today had to be better in overall play. Both made one great shot and putt after another, championship golf at the highest level. Of course I was rooting for Phil, but Stenson earned it big-time and it's nice to see him get his first major. He's also the first Swedish man to win one.

Amazing show by Stenson and Phil! Our Cultural Communist "friends" in the media are fanatically obsessed with "breaking down barriers," but surprisingly, I haven't seen one mention of the fact that Henrik Stenson is the first Scandinavian to win a major golf championship!

I hope he enjoys this great victory, perhaps the best ever at the British, with his wife and 3 kids (his youngest not pictured in the image below)...
