there is an abundance of talent at the FCS level. here are some of the statistical leaders as of today (i'll stop with the Top 25, as the list would be VERY long otherwise) along with a few notes:

cooper%20kupp_zpsscbavpyk.jpg

1) Cooper Kupp (Eastern Washington) 4 games, 46 catches, 759 yards, 10 touchdowns (see post above for more evidence)

jake%20wieneke_zpsnocbm2gf.jpg

2) Jake Wieneke (South Dakota State) 3 games, 26 catches, 528 yards, 6 touchdowns

brock%20mccoin_zpsrb8n7bxx.jpg

7) Brock McCoin (Tennessee Tech) 4 games, 36 catches, 480 yards, 2 touchdowns

on this season's opening weekend, Brock lit up the Houston Cougars secondary for 9 catches, 264 yards, and 2 touchdowns including a 77-yarder. he also had this shake-and-bake run-after-catch beauty for 47 yards: http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=13594489

tyler%20dube_zpsye1qpoxo.jpg

10) Tyler Dube (Sacred Heart) 4 games, 23 catches, 414 yards, 5 touchdowns

Dube is as quick as a hiccup and is almost untouchable in the open field as seen in this one-game highlight reel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GO9VuLmtYug

nic%20sblendorio_zpsnltad9ks.jpg

21) Nic Sblendorio (Eastern Washington) 4 games, 17 catches, 310 yards, 1 touchdown

frequently overshadowed by his "All Galaxy" teammate Cooper Kupp, Sblendorio is still very much an electrifying playmaker

jake%20raymond_zpsufqbegp9.jpg

22) Jake Raymond (Morehead State) 4 games, 31 catches, 310 yards, 1 touchdown

virtually invisible in the media world of football's "real" superstars, Raymond has quietly led the Eagles in receiving every year of his career.

madison%20mangum_zpsimsy11eb.jpg

23) Madison Mangum (Idaho State) 4 games, 23 catches, 307 yards, 3 touchdowns

he made this amazing one-handed catch earlier this year:

troy%20pelletier_zpsxw1dv213.jpg

25) Troy Pelletier (Lehigh) 4 games, 28 catches, 300 yards, 4 touchdowns

led Lehigh in receiving last year as a freshman and was a finalist for the Jerry Rice Award given to the top freshman in the FCS

**************************

this list doesn't include All-American and reigning FCS Special Teams Player of the Year (and former cornerback) Ed Eagan (Northwestern State, seen below returning a kick), who has been largely quiet thus far this season due to being on a terrible team.

ed%20eagan_zpsihltvqdm.jpg

the dynamic wide receiver/kick returner had a big outing in a loss to Central Arkansas yesterday, however.

ed%20eagan%20record_zpstpikzxhi.jpg

Eagan finished the game with 10 catches for 108 yards and 2 touchdowns. he now holds the school record for career receptions despite it being just his third year to play wide receiver. Eagan also set the Southland Conference record for career kick returns with 108 and moved into second place in the conference's career kick return yardage with 2,449 yards. here is a good profile piece on him.

Justin Watson with a go-to-hell at Villanova

another youngster i should mention is Justin Watson, a sophomore wideout for Penn in the Ivy League.

despite measuring in at 6-foot-2, 195-pounds coming out of high school (he's now at 6-3, 210), setting records and winning all the honors one could possibly list as a wide receiver and championship football player (see his bio for the impressive details), and being a talented athlete in multiple sports (he was also a standout basketball player), Watson was virtually unrecruited. that's likely not a surprise to anyone here. in fact, the two biggest schools to offer him were Akron and Buffalo, but he eschewed them and went with Penn.

all he's done since arriving is continue to re-write record books. now, as a sophomore, he has 230 yards and 3 touchdowns in 2 games. he was also named the Ivy League Offensive PoW after leading Penn to its first road win over a Top 5-ranked school (#4 Villanova) EVER.

in addition to being on the road against a highly ranked opponent, Penn hadn't defeated Villanova in 104 years!

but they can't say that anymore.

despite only playing in the first half (he left with an injury), he still racked up 5 catches for 87 yards and 2 touchdowns. he accounted for all the scoring in the first half, which proved to be the difference in the HUGE upset win.

you can see his go-to-hell on an affletic defensive back and breakaway speed en route to his second touchdown in the first few moments of this video recap: http://www.ivyleaguedigitalnetwork.com/penn/video/penn-football-stuns-4-villanova

Watson has pro-caliber talent and size. he is definitely a youngster to keep an eye on.

thanks for the kind words, gentlemen.

i started talking highly about Arkansas wide receiver Drew Morgan back when he was still lighting up high school fields all across the state. it seems University of Arkansas coaches have finally figured out that he's pretty good, too (all it took was a two-year racial apprenticeship and injuries to several "real" players to make it happen) ...

check out these articles talking about Morgan's "surprising" success:

Morgan emerges as top WR option after injuries

Arkansas WR Drew Morgan makes the most of his opportunity

pay attention to the negative connotations regarding his self confidence in some of the snippets from the two pieces below and compare them to how a black afflete's "swagger" is always lauded in the media:

Even first-year Arkansas offensive coordinator Dan Enos admitted wide receiver Drew Morgan was considered more of a role player than playmaker by his coaches last spring ...

The often overlooked 6-foot-1, 195-pound wide receiver ...

The game was a culmination of hard work and taking advantage of an opportunity for the junior, though he expects it to be just the beginning of his contributions ...

Morgan appeared well on his way to becoming one of Arkansas' top targets last season following a strong showing during a preseason scrimmage ...

However, his knack for confrontation with defensive players earned him some strong words from coach Bret Bielema, and he finished last season with only 10 catches for 141 yards in limited action.

Morgan's emergence as a top target for quarterback Brandon Allen continued at times during scrimmages before this season, but he was still behind Hatcher and Cornelius on the depth chart ...

... Enos, who said Morgan's name "wasn't mentioned" among Arkansas' top playmakers when he was hired away from Central Michigan following last season.

"No one ever talked poorly on him or said he wasn't a good player, but it was more, 'He's got a role, and he'll get in there and make a play or two,'" Enos said. "He certainly has seized the moment and seized his opportunity."

Enos said he tracked Morgan's rise this season back to a dropped pass during the preseason, after which he was chided by Bielema for a lack of focus during practice ...

... Drew Morgan, an unlikely contributor to that point ...

"It's no surprise to me," receivers coach Michael Smith told Whole Hog Sports. "I don't want to sound like I'm shocked that Drew did it. I keep telling everybody I get to see these guys every day. Here's a guy who took advantage of an opportunity, and I've just got to keep him playing like that."

His play has helped him earn the trust of not only his position coach but of his quarterback, currently the SEC's second leading passer ...

"I love the kid," Bielema said. "He lacks nothing in confidence. I've been sitting in wide receiver meetings the last couple of weeks and he knows every position."

so, let me get this straight. Morgan has confidence in his ability, makes plays every day in practice, and doesn't take crap from any of the negroes on the defense ... but that has "somehow" been a bad thing. at least until now. and getting "chided" for dropping a single pass during practice?

can you imagine any of those things being what prevents an "electrifying" affletic play-makuh from seeing the field?

"weird," huh?

as it stands, despite being held in check by no one except his own coaching staff, Morgan has caught an eye-popping 90% of his targets (18 of 20 targets) according to the Advanced Stats guys, which not only leads the team (tight end Hunter Henry is second at 81% on 17 of 21) but absolutely destroys the "real" wideout who was the annointed "star" (Keon Hatcher 56.5% on 13 of 23 targets).

again, "weird," huh?

in addition to catching 90% of the balls thrown in his direction, Morgan leads the team in catches (18), receiving yards (303), yards-per-catch (16.8), and receiving touchdowns (3) despite only starting and being an integral part of the passing attack in two games. in comparison, Morgan's two-game numbers all surpass those of Hatcher the Dynamic who was the "star" receiver in the team's first two games before getting injured on the last offensive play of game two.

how "weird" that an "overlooked" White player is actually better than a "dynamic" black player ... and here i am repeatedly told that the best players always play. *smirk*

the Razorbacks play Tennessee tonight.

a quick follow-up to the Drew Morgan comments above ...

Morgan has started the last three games for the Razorbacks. in those three contests, he's led the Hogs in both receptions and receiving yards in every game. in two of those games, he's accounted for over half of Arkansas' passing yardage (155 against Texas A&M, 110 against Tennessee).

additionally, he puts up those numbers while simultaneously being extremely efficient. last night, he had 5 catches on just 6 targets (the lone incompletion was an obvious overthrow). that brings his total on the year to 23 catches on just 26 targets, an astounding 88% completion rate.

just imagine what he could do if he actually had talent!

in reality, the kid is a beast. all he needed was an opportunity.

Week 5 very bad week

Nightmare week for our WR guys and easily the worst this year--I don't even want to talk about Nebraska and their two stud receivers--I blame the QB and the coach.
Gotta hope and think week 6 will be a bounce back week.

Good to hear about Morgan I remember you bringing him up when he was struggling to get a D1 look in HS despite gaudy stats and kicking ass at every 7 on 7 tourney he attended. It seems white athletes and white people in general held to higher standards. Affletes drop passes all the time. Whitebboy WR drops one in practice and he's in the doghouse?! Ridiculous.

Ryan Switzer and Cooper Kupp question.

Nice to see Switzer have a good game last night vs. Pitt. Are NFL people looking at Cooper Kupp out of Eastern Washington? He is putting up huge numbers. I thought the site was down for good but very glad to see it lives another day.

all the "experts" have posted nothing regarding Kupp, but they'd have to be (in truth, they are) fools to ignore his obvious game-breaking ability. he's on the verge of, or already broken, most important receiving records ... and he's only played in 35 games as a true junior.

it's been a terrific couple of weeks for our guys at wideout, and i'll try to compile some of the more impressive performances when i get the chance.

Cooper Kupp stands alone as the nation's best

yes, i said it.

Cooper Kupp is THE best wide receiver in college football today, regardless of the level. the numbers he is putting up are simply phenomenal.

as of this post, here's what he's done:

31 career games
233 receptions for 3,748 yards, and 45 touchdowns
18 100-yard games
has scored at least 1 touchdown in 27 of his 31 games
15 catches for 246 yards and 3 touchdowns at Oregon (Sept. 5)
First-team All-American in both 2013 and 2014
2013 Jerry Rice Award winner

already holds 6 FCS records, 4 school records, and a Big Sky conference record

this is after just 3 games into his junior year ...

this season in those 3 games: 36 catches, 626 yards, and 8 touchdowns. averaging 208.7 yards-per-game and 17.4 yards-per-catch.

he is peerless.

These are tremendous statistics.

If he were black he's be a surefire first round pick.

Since he's not he probably won't be.

Didn't know about this guy. Tuned in to the Eastern Washington game but the red field made me queasy. Had I known of him I might have just taken a couple car sick pills and tried to watch.

'Looks like a Chemist...plays like Spider Man"?...of course freshman Hunter Renfrow was a prefered walk-on for Clemson...continuing to make more impact each week (4-93-1 last week vs N.C. St.)...interesting article from a few weeks ago (long so just posting some of it)

Clemson’s Hunter Renfrow looks like a chemist, plays like Spiderman

Recently, while switching majors from civil engineering (not chemistry) to economics he inquired about scheduling an advisor. Told the hours would clash with his football duties, Renfrow patiently explained he was a member of the varsity and not the club team.

There’s always been a Hunter Renfrow on Dabo Swinney’s teams. A walk-on receiver who earned a scholarship at Alabama, he seems to have an affinity for guys like Renfrow.

Frequently compared to Adam Humphries, a more recent member of the program who stuck with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after being signed this year as an undrafted free agent, Renfrow is probably more similar to Tyler Grisham, another former receiver who like Humphries had a brief pro career with Pittsburgh and Denver before returning to Clemson as a graduate assistant coach.

All three wore No. 13.

“Hunter can play,†Swinney said. “Now he’s 175 pounds, he’s stronger and he’s still just a freshman. He’s still going to get better.

“He is fast and explosive and just a very instinctive football player, great change of direction and excellent ball skills. And he’s our backup punter, too, don’t forget about that.

“He’s just a good football player,†he said. “He is a legit division one scholarship wide receiver.â€

Actually he began as a ball boy for his father’s teams at Socastee High. Tim Renfrow said his son wanted to be a receiver “since he was little†but was needed at quarterback in the triple-option scheme, starting as a halfback and quarterback as a sophomore then running the offense fulltime his last two years.

“I think he’d have been disappointed if he didn’t try at that level,†said Tim Renfrow, now athletic director at Socastee. “He just made up his mind to go and see what he could do.â€

Swinney’s background creates a fertile environment for players like his son, he said. “A lot of places you go as a walk-on they might not get the shot that he got.â€

Athletic by the grace of God, he honed the skill over the years hanging with his dad’s teams, playing with his siblings and cousins. He and his three brothers would agitate their mother by tossing balls indoors. Renfrow said he became a better receiver because of her inaccurate throws in the backyard. “I had to learn how to adjust to the ball, a lot.â€

Britan Covey (Utah) & Ryan Switzer (UNC) have had the "explosive" label from announcers and rightfully so!

Soph. WR -Mike Dudek (Illinios) is applying for medical redshirt after having knee surgery in the Spring...& TCU's Ty Slanina is out for the season w broken collarbone...hopefully they get healthy ; then look for them to get on the Leader list next season!

Thanks for posting those stats Leonardfan...Trent Taylor is having a fantastic season..good to see him up there! TE- Higbee's numbers would be higher; but he's missed the past few games w injury

here's a good read about La Tech's standout wideout Trent Taylor: Breaking down Trent Taylor's 1,000-yard season.

an excerpt:
"He's dynamic with the ball in his hands. He's really shifty and he's a guy that's going to keep getting the ball a lot," (La Tech quarterback Jeff) Driskel said Monday. ""He's always open, so he's going to get a lot of targets ... He has great body control, great hands and always gets yards after the catch. I don't have enough good things to say about Trent."

thomas%20sperbeck%20boise%20state_zps3e8o1gdo.jpg

Boise State's Thomas Sperbeck getting some love: Boise State's Sperbeck possesses unexplainable knack for the spectacular. the link includes a couple of videos, as well.

an excerpt:
Sperbeck’s sure hands and emerging ability to contort his body and adjust to deep balls have made him one of the best offensive players in the Mountain West. He leads the conference in receiving yards (766), yards per catch (19.6) and receiving touchdowns (7). He has 39 catches, six off the lead.

He also is on pace to break Titus Young’s school record for receiving yards in a season (1,215 in 2010).

Arkansas' Drew Morgan, despite being an afterthought to begin the season, has emerged as the Razorbacks most dynamic and consistent playmaker in the passing game. he leads the team in receptions (35), receiving yards (498) and receiving touchdowns (six), with his two biggest touchdowns coming after regulation in the Oct. 24 four-overtime win over Auburn. he's been playing with a nagging shoulder injury for the last several weeks and re-aggravated it in the blowout win over UT-Martin. he was pulled early in the second quarter, and reports indicate he will be ready to go for the Hogs' next game.

if he isn't ready, this will be what they're gonna miss:

bad news for Wyoming's Tanner Gentry, who is still out with a shoulder injury. he's missed the Cowboys' last two games and is expected to miss a couple more.

jordan%20westerkamp%20nebraska_zpsocja1bxz.png

Nebraska's electric receiver Jordan Westerkamp is getting some love from his upcoming opponents, the Michigan State Spartans:
* LETHAL RECEIVER: Jordan Westerkamp's nickname this week? "Mel Gibson." That's what (MSU wide receivers coach Keith) Williams is calling him.

"Westy's a baller. He got that Mel Gibson shoulder going on, like 'Lethal Weapon,'" Williams said. "But Westy's a baller. He's a warrior. He's a baller. He's relentless. … The guys feed off him being a tough guy."

Despite playing with two hurt shoulders, Westerkamp still had nine catches for 123 yards against Purdue.

"You certainly have to know where No. 1 is at. There is no question," said Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio.

Western Michigan's electrifying Daniel Braverman takes the field tonight against Ball State. Braverman, whose "deceptive" 10.6 100-meter speed "somehow" continues to destroy opposing secondaries filled with "real" affletes (hello, Ohio State?), is just 73 yards short of a 1,000 yard season. he's averaging over 100 receiving yards per game and already has 11 touchdown catches.

****************

i've been hearing and reading with increasing frequency about how Boise State's Thomas Sperbeck is simply uncoverable in man-to-man defensive schemes. that's pretty high praise!
here's some more glowing reviews for the "surprising" talents of Sperbeck:

Sperbeck, McNichols reward Broncos trust
Rypien-to-Sperbeck is a special combo: Since true freshman Brett Rypien became the quarterback, junior wide receiver Thomas Sperbeck has been a one-man highlight reel. He made a juggling, one-handed catch to set up a touchdown and scored two TDs of his own against Wyoming.

Sperbeck’s numbers since Rypien’s debut against Idaho State, a span of five and a half games: 28 catches for 672 yards and seven touchdowns (24 yards per catch). Sperbeck has jumped to 14th in the nation in yards per catch (19.6 for the entire season) and 18th in receiving yards per game (95.8).

“They both understand where the ball is supposed to go and the holes in the defense, so that’s been good,†offensive coordinator Eliah Drinkwitz said.

Coach Bryan Harsin still thinks about the first of Sperbeck’s now-many head-scratching catches last year against Air Force.

Thirteen months later, Sperbeck is on pace to break Titus Young’s school record for single-season receiving yards.

“That’s something (Sperbeck) has that not many people do — a knack for tracking the football and catching the ball, which is not a natural thing to do,†Harsin said. “It’s a combination of Brett giving him a chance ... and he’s really made those plays. That, for a quarterback, also gives you tremendous confidence that it doesn’t have to be picture perfect every single time. That’s where the chemistry is showing up.â€

********************

Buffalo plays tonight on national tv, and they feature a potent passing attack that is led by big play BIG targets in 6-foot-4 wide receiver Ron Willoughby (37 catches, 511 yards, 5 touchdowns) and 6-foot-5 tight end Matt Weiser (39 catches, 405 yards, 1 touchdown). the duo has combined for roughly half of the team's entire passing offense this season.

********************

matt%20vandeberg%20iowa_zps3zzkzmsl.jpg

it'd be hard for a guy to fly any further under the radar than Iowa's Matt VandeBerg. he's far and away the Hawkeyes leading receiver this season, accounting for over a quarter of Iowa's passing attack (44 catches, 445 yards, 2 touchdowns). look for him to have a big game against Indiana this week.

Drew Morgan, Arkansas' afterthought-turned-unstoppable wideout, now leads the SEC with 9 receiving touchdowns. the uncoverable Morgan has also been named to the Biletnikoff Award Watch List, presented annually to the nation’s top wide receiver.

per University of Arkansas Sports Information:
Though he began the season as a reserve, Morgan was quickly thrust into a starter’s role after three of Arkansas’ top receivers suffered significant injuries in the first few weeks of the 2015 season. He made his first career start on Sept. 19 against Texas Tech and has recorded 38 receptions for 517 yards (13.6 avg.) and eight touchdowns in the seven games since.

Morgan saved his finest game for last week’s SEC road showdown at No. 19 Ole Miss. The Greenwood, Ark. native set career highs with nine receptions and three touchdown grabs, which equaled the program record. He totaled 122 receiving yards for his third 100-yard game of the season, all three coming in SEC games.

His best performances have come in big moments. He leads the nation in receptions (5), receiving yards (52) and touchdown receptions (3) in overtime. Morgan is also the SEC leader in receiving yards (479) and touchdown receptions (5) in games away from home.

clutch.

and to think he only got an opportunity after:

A) Bobby Petrino was fired. Petrino had said there was no way he was going to sign a White receiver.

B) 3 "real" affletes got injured.

but the best players play ... right?

currently in the FCS, the top 4 wide receivers nationally are "overachievers with deceptive speed."

"weird," huh?

Cooper Kupp, my choice for the best wideout in all of collegiate football, continues to dominate. he finished Saturday's game with 9 catches for 98 yards and 1 touchdown in a turneover-marred loss to Northern Arizona. the wunderkind now has 100 catches for 1,388 yards and 18 touchdown catches on the season.

jake%20wieneke%20sdsu_zpsww6zwbpr.jpg

Jake Wieneke is unstoppable, even when his coaching staff inexplicably inserts a scattershot-armed black quarterback (who i'm assured is "dynamic" and "exciting" despite being completely unable to read a defense or throw an accurate ball). despite this handicap, Wieneke still pulled down 4 catches for 104 yards and 2 touchdowns, one from 74 yards out. he now has 51 catches for 1,046 yards and 10 touchdowns on the year.

Anthony Warrum (Illinois State, jr.) is similarly faced with a daunting task ... get open again perpetual double teams from opposing secondaries AND manage to catch the oft-errant heaves of his "electrifying" black quarterback. on Saturday, he managed to once again accomplish both, and the former 3-star recruit (by Rivals, yet still without a single FBS scholarship offer) pulled in 8 catches for 241 yards and 3 touchdowns. for comparison, his "star" black quarterback in the game completed 14 of 35 passes for 317 yards and 1 interception. who is the real star here? sigh.

additionally, Warrum was named the Missouri Valley Conference Offensive PoW for his effort. on the year, Warrum has 43 catches for 1,031 yards and 13 touchdowns.

tyler%20dube%20record_zpsxw4wfvgt.jpg

Tyler Dube tied the Sacred Heart all-time record for touchdowns scored with his 37th td. the senior finished the game with team-highs of 6 catches for 54 yards and the 1 score. for the year, Dube has 61 catches for 989 yards and 8 touchdowns.

one final post for the day ...

trent%20taylor%20la%20tech%20profile_zpsh31eqep7.j pg

La Tech slot machine, Trent Taylor, is currently the 7th-ranked wideout in receiving yardage in the FBS. isn't it "strange" that someone who is so dynamic was virtually unrecruited out of high school?

even though on his high school highlight tape he could do this:

that's right. despite being a 3-star recruit with 4.5 speed (and a 37-inch vertical and 4.19 speed in the short shuttle) who was a two-time state champion and state championship MVP with 172 catches for 2,725 yards and 38 touchdowns in his final two years of high school, Taylor had exactly ONE scholarship offer.

shouldn't that give pause to coaching staff's around the country in how they evaluate potential signees?

there are only a handful of players in the national top-20 receiving statistics who weren't heavily recruited. but what's even "weirder" is that there appears to be a pattern involving who that is ... the virtually unrecruited players?

- Trent Taylor (one offer) *White
- Alex Erickson (no offers) *White
- Thomas Sperbeck (3 offers) *White
- Corey Davis (two offers)

no matter how small (Jakeem Grant, 5-foot-7), slow (Keyarris Garrett), small and slow (Gabe Marks, 6-foot-0, 4.6 speed), or low profile (Tajae Sharp, 2 stars), virtually all it takes to get myriad offers is to be a black player with some talent. if you're White, you're almost out of luck.

only two other exceptions appear on the list ... Daniel Braverman, the White speedster from Miami was offered multiple scholarships, though mostly from small schools far, far away from his hometown. despite his blazing speed (10.6 in the 100-meters), the speed-crazy Florida schools were not the least bit interested.

the other is the nation's top FBS receiver: Josh Doctson of TCU. coming out of high school, he only had 1 scholarship offer, to Wyoming. though, it could be said that there are literally hundreds of White high school players who have better highlight tapes than he did yet receive ZERO offers. how did so many coaches "miss" on what is supposedly a sure-fire First-Round Draft pick in the upcoming NFL draft?

regardless, it is clear that the "evaluation" of "talent" is biased against White players.

meanwhile, the White cats will keep doing what they do ... overcoming their White "privilege" with their blue collars, lunch pails, and deceptive speed.

Too bad none of these outstanding players' abilities transfer to the next level  Code-speak for lack of melanin.

check out this catch by Akron's seldom-used sophomore wideout Austin Wolf:

Wolf's diving, highlight grab

*******************

in the same game, Miami (OH) sophomore, and leading receiver, Sam Martin went down late in the first half with an apparent knee injury after making a drive-sustaining catch.
