Well Mariota is staying at Oregon, my respect for him just went up a bit. Usually nonwhite quarterbacks skedaddle the moment they're eligible to enter the NFL.

Good news. Its been a rough couple weeks for him so this makes sense to me!

So with Mariota staying in college, does that open the door for Manziel to go easily top 10. Bridgewater does seem like a solid prospect but beyond that dont think Hundley, Boyd etc seem very good at all. Could be a good year for white quarterbacks in the first round. We should see Manziel, Carr and Mettenberger all go first round.

What about McCarron does anyone think somebody might fall in love with him and pull the trigger? Maybe Minnesota?

Texans and Jaguars are undoubtedly in the market for a new quarterback. Bridgewater has an NFL arm but he is undersized in terms of weight and doesn't look to have a frame that can add bulk. Manziel could be a Jaguar if they end up with the 2nd overall pick.

Buccaneers will have a high pick but Glennon has shown tons of ability. He gets another year.

Vikings will likely give up on Ponder. They could target Manziel or Carr.

Titans could go either way with Locker. I think it would be foolish to give up on him considering that he was having a good season prior to his injuries. I'd argue that he's the most athletic quarterback in the league.

Jets would be well served to give up on Smiff. They'll give him another season, however. Manuel has played better than Smiff in Buffalo and will also get another season or two.

Teams that will end up with high picks like the Falcons and Packers won't draft a quarterback for obvious reasons.

Mettenberger is injured and Fales has seen his stock decline from playing on a bad San Jose State team. The team that picks either of them will get a great bargain much like the Bucs did with Glennon. Underrated SEC prospects McCarron and Murray will also be great value picks.

Bortles is a fantastic quarterback but seems unlikely to declare. He'll be a first round pick in 2015.

In terms of black quarterbacks, Bridgewater seems to be the only lock for the first round. Hundley is, at least according to one scout, too raw for the pros. Someone might fall in love with dat upside, however. Boyd's stock saw a huge hit when Mel Kiper of all people said that he is a middling prospect.

Two teams that do need a QB are Jacksonville and Houston. Minnesota's problem has more to do with the fact that they have the worst defense in the NFL. I think Philly would be dumb to let Foles go, considering he is probably going to the Pro-Bowl this year. Cleveland and Arizona might also get a Qb. The New York Jets need a new QB, Geno Smith is garbage (8 TDS and 19 ints), terrible numbers even for a rookie.

Just read that Mettenberger has a full blown ACL tear, he's not exactly known for his mobility in the first place. Hopefully this doesn't hurt his draft stock too much.

I saw that as well - really stinks. Both him and Murray both have ACL injuries.

I could see either the vikings, browns or jacksonville going after the black quarterback sewerwater.

I think the moronic jaguars will draft him. We just have to hope that the rest of the black quarterbacks get pushed down draft boards. Both Mettenberger and Murray getting ACL injuries in back to back weeks is not good obviously. Derek Carr, Manziel, Garopollo, Fales, McCarron are all guys that need to perform well during the pre draft work outs. Hopefully Mettenberger's injury does not impact his stock that much.

I agree in full. Ive not yet seen Shaw be unimpressive. Every time I watch an SC game Im thinking to myself "why arent they ever talkin about this guy as a good pro prospect?".

Just talk about upside instead and how straight line speed specifically the forty time is so important even tho you hardly ever run flat out for that length without changing direction etc. Surely route running and safe hands are the most important, whats the point in running 40 yards quickly and dropping the ball like Aaron Dobson for example!

The 40 is an overrated statistic. For most positions the 10 yard split is a better measure. The 10 yard split is the first 10 yards of a 40.

The 10 yard split is especially important for edge rushers. How often does a DE run 40 yards? The 10 is a better measure.

Clay Matthews had a phenomenal 10 yard split. He is, of course, an outstanding pass rusher.

Yes, but its passed overrated. The 40 is a complete waste of time. The only way it would matter was if you had to run it in full uniform.

the 40 time was originally to see how fast a guy could cover punts, it factored in how long the ball would be in the air which was around 4.5 seconds (hand timed)

10 to 20 yard bursts are more important as well as agility. Whites usually excel at these tests and you can see it on the field.

The oddest thing about the 40 is that they don't run it in pads. They also don't typically run it on a playing surface. I don't think it is completely without value, but it is the most overrated test they do, possibly followed by vertical jump.

All of the tests are specific skills, which are not used in actually playing football. You can improve your 40 time without increasing your football speed at all. The same goes for the cone drills. Vertical jump is harder to do this with, but broad jump is all about learning how to do it. Bench press is skill specific, but you do have to put in the time. The tests kinda sorta resemble stuff that happens on the field, but are nothing compared to actually watching the players play the game. Of course watching film doesn't give the scouts the chance to see the players in their underwear at the combine. I mean, would you rather draft a player who put up great numbers in a good conference, or a player with good muscle definition and 40 times?

The 40 and combine are both totally overrated when evaluating prospects yet every year the DWFs, media and even NFL teams make the mistake of going off of the "underwear olympics" instead of reviewing on the field tape. After being an avid draft follower for 10 years I have grown pretty tired of the ridiculous stereotype cliches thrown out year after year. It is the same recycled garbage which is why the same poor product is put on the field year in and year out.

Even last year when Spadola ran a 4.4, Swope ran a 4.3 40 and Vernon was flawless in the gauntlet drill only Swope was drafted and that was in the 6th round. The whole draft is based upon the flawed and non-nonsensical logic and racial prejudice against whites.

The only time white players are looked at as legitimate athletes at the combine is when O-Linemen, Linebackers and Tight ends perform well. For every other position it is all recycled caste-speak and made up scout lingo to describe white players.

Honestly, this year will be like any other year - the 25% ceiling for white players may or may not be reached. I will say I am eager to see how Fales and Garappolo perform and I hope they both get drafted higher than expected.

It sounds like the overrated afrolete Brett Hundley is going to be declaring for the draft. Anyone who has watched him play should observe how poor he plays against good teams. He does not translate to the NFL at all, he will be another overrated Quoataback - with the spread option neutralized it will be interesting to see which team/GM makes the mistake of drafting this bum.

wow, i wonder if he consulted with anyone to see where he would likely wind up in the draft, or if some team said they would take him early. Even most of the jocksniffers have admitted that he should stay another year to improve or in a more pc way "needs to stay another year to polish his game". In fact if you google 'stay another year to polish his game" an article about him pops up. Or it could be he knows he has peaked and isn't going to get any better and might regress, although that didn't stop Josh Freeman from being picked high, but he isn't even on Freeman's level right now.

Edit: read that article and he was advised to stay

I heard speculation that Bortles might stay another year, so that might be one less top White qb prospect to come out.

I just read a bit on Rotoworld claiming that a few NFL scouts consider Bortles the #1 QB prospect if he declares. His stock has improved significantly over the last few weeks.

I would have no issue with him coming out - He has led UCF to a dream season that will likely not be replicated. His stock is sky high and his great play has really created a buzz. His game is reminiscent of Luck/Roethlisberger - two of the elite QBs in the game. There is no consensus number 1 QB - Bortles is better than Bridgewater who was the media and DWFs pick for the next black hype this season and number 1 overall draft pick next year. If Bortles declared and ended up in Houston that would be a win-win.

what the heck is going on ? This is Todd McGay's top 5 quarterbacks list for the draft

1. Bridgewater
2. Bortles
3. Manziel
4. Carr
5. Mettenberger

My guess is that he thought he'd lose too much credibility with the DWF if his top 5 list of bridgewater, Boyd, Hundley, Logan Thomas, and Braxton Miller all inevitably ended up being major flops in the NFL with the possible exception of Bridgewater. The bad black quarterback play in the NFL this season probably helped contribute to it as well.

Every mock draft I've seen has Bridgewater going first overall. These clueless dorks really think he is better than Manziel, Carr, McCarron, Mettenberger, Bortles. Some mocks have Manziel going in the second round.

Defenses have unfortunately caught up with Case Keenum. I still think he is a good quarterback who would thrive in a system like Matt Flynn has in Green Bay. Matt McGloin has had a similar season with a bit more success. Raiders will not stick with him. The bright side is that they have given up on Pryor. The Browns will surely dump Weeden. Titans may or may not give Locker another year. Jets and Bills will continue hoping that their sunk costs will somehow pay off.

Matt Ryan is not the reason for Atlanta's terrible season. Sam Bradford had a significant injury and was having his best year prior to it. Mike Glennon is inexperienced but has consistently shown franchise quarterback potential. Ponder is likely finished in Minnesota, Cassell has performed well in relief, Josh Freeman is a waste of 3 million dollars. Eli Manning's season is rather puzzling.

Teams likely to draft a QB in rounds 1-2: Texans, Raiders, Browns, Vikings
Teams unlikely to draft QB in rounds 1-2: Falcons, Rams, Bucs, Giants, Jets, Bills
Possible, but uncertain: Titans

Look for Trent Murphy to be a high pick out of Stanford's Defence! The outside linebacker gets rave reviews from places like walter football so he must be good.....!

It's still beyond me how Chase Thomas isn't at least in some teams rotation at OLB.
Don't know why the Saints cut him. I doubt he would be any worse than Parys Haralson.

My QB predictions:

I've got Browns, Jets, Raiders, Jags, and Texans all looking for a new QB this offseason.

I also have the Saints looking for a young QB to groom to take over for Brees in a few years. And believe it or not, I think the 49ers bring in some competition for Kaepernick.

I think the Browns and Texans go for a veteran. (Cutler/McCown, Fitzpatrick, Flynn, and probably Vick will be looking for a starting gig).

That leaves three teams where we can see a rookie step in and start. Sadly, none of the three will be a good environment to learn the ropes...

-----

I think Cassell deserves, and will get a shot to be the Vikings starter.

Buffalo will foolishly waste another year on Manuel.

Bradford and Locker will both return next season, but will be on thin ice.

Palmer, Glennon, and Foles have all earned their jobs for next season.

It may be too early to tell, but I think Cousins takes over in Washington next year.

The rest of the teams are set at QB...
