As we get closer to the 2013 season, I thought I'd post a list of high profile starting position battles where the favorites to win are a white vs a black. Some of these battles may be dated and already over, but we can update it and expand it over time. I'll list the white player first.

Alabama RT, Austin Shepard vs two blacks.
Arkansas QB, Brandon Allen vs Brandon Mitchell
Duke QB, Brandon Connette vs Boone
Illinois QB, Reilly O'Toole vs mixed race Scheelhaase
Missouri QB, Corbin Berkstresser vs James Franklin
Syracuse QB, Charley Loeb vs James Kinder
TCU QB, Pachall vs Boykin
Florida RT, Moore vs Green
Auburn OG, Kozan vs Diamond
Auburn OT, white candidates Miller and Callahan vs Young
Auburn linebacker, white Jake Holland fighting a black for two different linebacker spots
Kansas State QB, Waters vs Sams
Ole Miss OG, Junen vs Bell
Don't know how many of these are truly competitive battles, but found mention of them on bleacher report and a few other sources as well.

Nice work referendum. Im willing to bet Scheelchase and Franklin both "win" their competitions and lead their teams to poor to mediocre records.

Also both DJ Welter (LB) and Jordan Allen (DE) if LSU are in position battles. They have, however, been taking first team reps.

As far as LSU is concerned....

A lot of dwf's have been trying to bench projected starting MLB D.J. Welter before the season even starts...TigerDroppings website a few months ago had a thread made just for him that contained nearly 25 pages/500 post...the ultimate caste speak battle back-n-forth...positive & negative...a top the depth chart all spring; many seem to think it won't last; that OLB Lamin Barrow will shift over to MLB & allow another OLB to step up....Welter has gained some weight(230-235) w good speed...seems easy these days for white LB's in the SEC to be "lightning rods" for criticism if they do not absolutely play perfect! Dwf's forget that last year's MLB Kevin Minter(2nd Round Pick) took time to develop early in his career...will Welter be allowed the same learning-curve??

6'-6" DE Jordan Allen is entrenched as a starter with a solid Spring despite coming off season ending knee injury last year

Early enrollee DT-Christian LaCouture(should still be HS Sr.) impressed as well...could get into the rotation as true freshman!

Last year part-time starting LB Luke Muncie had to give up football for medical reasons/some type of stomach ailment.

TCU QB Casey Pachall should regain his starting role after being suspended...hopefully he stays out of trouble...TCU opens the season vs LSU.

At Georgia:

Tight end: Arthur Lynch vs. Jay Rome. Lynch catches well, blocks VERY well, and started last year. Rome has a ton of "upside". 3 years in, you would think some of that "upside" and/or "athleticism" would start to present itself. Lynch has an NFL body right now, and could be a star if given the chance.

Outside Linebacker: Chase Vasser vs. any black player they can find. Vasser has started a handful of games, and is a productive player. He is not very good at the point of attack, but is thought to be the Bulldogs' best LB in coverage. He just waits around until the "real athlete" get suspended or injured, and plays well. I can't exaggerate and say Vasser is a great player, but he's average, and about half are worse than average.

#3 Receiver. Rhett McGowan vs. the cast of a Tarzan Movie. Michael Bennett probably has one of the receiver spots nailed down, though there will be a strong push to remove him. The 3rd spot is a bit up for grabs. McGowan is a walkon from the same high school as Kris Durham. No offers at all. He does this weird thing: he CATCHES THE BALL. His existence is an affront to the caste system. Another one whose chance must wait until the affletes get suspended. Then he plays meaningful snaps on a team that was one play away from beating the national champs. Makes no sense .......... to a DWF.

Free Safety. Conner Norman vs. all the extras from the movie Zulu. Norman follows the pattern of white players who were stars in high school, but received no offers. His high school coach couldn't figure it out. Even his 4.39 40 time at the Scout Combine didn't help. He should be a corner, but has had to walk on, muscle up into a safety, and wait for the "real athletes" to get suspended, so he can start games for the second best team in the SEC, who couldn't possibly compete playing a bunch of white guys ...... unless they have to.

Fullback. Merritt Hall vs. The Million Man March. "Athletic Physiques", "Room-brightening smiles", "Great upside"; all of these things work to unseat Merritt Hall from the starting fullback position. Actually, it took a severe ankle sprain to finally do it, and the fullback role was immediately expanded in his absence. Richt has made vaguely homo-erotic comments about the physique of Hall's expected replacement, but the breakthrough just hasn't happened. In a sane world Hall is a starting inside linebacker. Another walkon whose high school coach just can't figure it out.

Offensive Line. It's fairly open across the board, except for the white center. There are only four black linemen on the roster, but at least two of them will start.

That's a rundown of the position battles for the Bulldogs. There's a pretty good chance that UGA will field 8 whites on offense at times, 7 most of the time. If more than two are on the field on defense at any time, .......... I can't think of a dare that's outrageous enough. UGA is really a great case study for the caste system. These white walkons keep breaking through, and the special teams are riddled with them. It's almost like some of them should have gotten scholarship offers.

When does everyone want to get started on the 2013 college team write ups?

Leonardfan, I'd be up for doing some team writeups this year, but my preference is to start them much closer to season opening time, as positions start to solidify, as the closer we get to September, the more accurate. Of course for some teams, like South Carolina, Miami or Ole Miss, it might make sense to do soon, as there are so few white starters in play that we'd be pretty accurate right now.

A few QBs have decided to transfer with the most recognizable being Wes Lunt. I am hoping he lands at another major program - he is a guy with alot of potential and was in a three way race with two other white QBs. This gives him a shot to become a starter at a different school instead of being buried on a depth chart behind potentially two other white QBs.

Nick Hirschman formerly of Colorado is transferring to Akron.

Max Shortell is transferring to Jacksonville St. I think this is a historically black college. He will get to start right away and Philip Nelson a promising freshmen last year will take the reins in Minnesota.

Steven Bench is another big name - former PSU QB is attracting attention from Miss. St and South Florida.

There are several position battles on Michigan's offensive line this spring...

Unfortunately not much of the rest of the roster looks like that. :(

Jackson State is a historically black college (Walter Payton), Jacksonville State is not.

I'm up for some college football previews again this year! :) I agree with you guys, I think I'll put up a list of all of the teams in June, so we could start then? I think it might have to be June, as the mammoth task of completing 124 teams would take a long time; it usually takes us from May to July to finish them all in previous years. Also, after the "white" teams are previewed, people lose interest in researching a lot of the smaller, mostly black schools. Plus, if we wait, maybe Col. Reb would be able to get back and help us out, too.

As for position battles, Nebraska will have a few of them this year. From looking at their depth chart this year, it's entirely possible Nebraska will start with an all-black defense and just 8 white starters. There are some position battles going on. Trevor Roach is in a battle to keep his MLB spot on defense, and I think he'll hold off his "more athletic" competition for the job on early downs. Nebraska also has two stud safeties in Nate Gerry and Drake Martinez coming in who will play right away, and OLB Josh Banderas will push for time to when these guys arrive for fall camp.

On offense, Nebraska will have a couple of white WR's vying for time in Jordan Westerkamp and Tyler Wullenwaber. The dynamic Taylor Martinez will return for his 4th year as Nebraska's starter.

Vanilla_Sky, do you follow SJSU closely?I am really intrigued by Fales and it seems that he has 1st round potential. I find if funny that people are already writing off his arm strength which is plenty good from what I have seen.

UVa (?)

With Sims gone (for academic reasons), I think there will be a competition for that starting spot. Lambert vs Watford, I don't know much about either. Lambert is the White kid, and I don't think he's taken any real-time snaps yet. I'm lookin' at the reporting in Virginia, and found this quote from the Virginian Pilot, on Sim's departure (remember he started @ Alabama before going to UVa & doing nothing), it's good stuff:

'Continuing to redefine the term "mobile quarterback," Phillip Sims is moving again..'

Whomever would like to do some of the Previews, I say it's time to start them now. :) Since there are 124 teams to preview, and each team requires some work to make the preview complete, I think this is the right time.

I'll take Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, TCU, Illinois, Washington State, Iowa State, Indiana, West Virginia, Nevada, Alabama, and Texas A&M for right now.

JL,

Great job so far with the write ups. I was on vacation and just got back yesterday. I will go through and pick some teams to do write ups for in the coming days and weeks.
