Cabrera is a thug? What Did he do?
Three straight 100+ loss seasons by the Astros, who were a dominant team for a number of years when they featured the Whitest roster in the majors.

In the early morning of October 3, 2009, police were called to the Cabreras' home and took Cabrera in for questioning. Cabrera had come home at 6:00am, after a night of drinking at the nearby Townsend Hotel, and got in an argument with his wife. He was seen later that day at a game at Comerica Park, with scratches on his face. Cabrera told reporters that the scratches came from his dog and refused to discuss the matter further.[SUP][50][/SUP] It was later reported he had a blood alcohol level of .26, when tested.[SUP][51][/SUP]
On January 21, 2010, it was reported that Cabrera spent three months in an alcohol abuse treatment center to help him recover from his addiction. He said at the time he had not drunk alcohol since he was taken into custody in October 2009, and that he would continue his treatment into spring training and the regular season.[SUP][52][/SUP]
Television station WXYZ had obtained a police report from an incident the preceding August, in which Cabrera was involved in a verbal altercation with diners at a restaurant inside the Townsend.[SUP][53][/SUP] Witnesses say Cabrera threatened to fight the group outside and indicated that he had a gun. Restaurant employees asked Cabrera to leave and police were called. There was no weapon in Cabrera's vehicle and Cabrera told team officials he did not own one. Cabrera then told team officials he had been dealing with personal issues and got upset, and the diners ended up dropping the matter.[SUP][54][/SUP]
Cabrera was arrested in Florida on suspicion for drunk driving and resisting arrest on February 16, 2011
While I agree that Cabrera is a first class douche bag I would not characterize him as a thug. In fact he is from well to do parents in Venezuela and he should be considered more of a spoiled brat. The reason why the difference is significant is that most SA ball players come from modest to very poor backgrounds and I understand that has created a bit of a gulf between him and some of the others from very different backgrounds (though they are all millionaires now).
If Cabrera is steroid free, and at this point there are no credible accusations, although there is lots of suspicion, he may end up one of the most prolific right handed hitters in the games history. He is a power guy yet looks like he'll win his 3rd straight batting title. That's Ted Williams, Rogers Hornsby territory.
You can't say he's likeable but there's something to be said about a guy that shows little flash, doesn't hot dog, has learned to play a tough position well, and wants to play every single day, regardless of his health. He actually is kind of an oddity. A superstar that wants no part of the limelight. His main disagreeable aspect as a player is his dogging it on ground balls. He is basically a cold hearted SOB and a bit of a prima donna. In other words a modern day Ted Williams. Because of his hispanic heritage he gets a major pass on his shortcomings, unlike 'Terrible Ted'.

Tigres manager Jim Leyland retired today. He's been around for a while. Not a bad manager for the modern game. Treated players like spoiled kids, which they are. Unfortunately I tuned into the local sports station carrying his presser and of course-the tears flowed. This guy cries more then John Boehner. He barely got started before he was tearing up. It's really embarrassing. The guys like 70 years old for goodness sakes. A man should only cry if his dog dies or he gets kicked in the nuts. Here is Leyland in front of a bunch of reporters, lots of whom ran him down for the last eight years, and he gets all weepy. I'm sure they were laughing at him.
Leyland could always give Dick Vermeil a battle in the pathetic publicly weeping men department.
Skull Face managed the Pirates for a number of years at the same time another weepy, Bill Cowher, coached the Steelers. The tears flowed year round in Pittsburgh between those two.
