It was close, but Pearson did it! I got to see it live thru the online feed, so it was extra exciting! I think she can come back and do it again in 2016, and go down as a legend in the sport.
Just a general comment on American distance running, I'm seeing some serious history being made here. Rupp's 10k, followed by the 6th place finish of Evan Jager in the 3000m steeplechase, and today Manzano gets a silver, the first in 44 years for an American. He appears to have some mestizo, but not much, could easily pass as a Southern European guy, so let's give him some credit. He came out of nowhere to finish 2nd, and Centrowitz barely missed the bronze.
If Rupp can medal in the 5k, and Symonds in the 800, and at least one medal in the women's 1500 (a couple of good chances there with Simpson and Uceny), this should go down as quite an Olympics, for white Americans, and of course whites in general. The Russian guy won the gold today in the men's high jump (disappointed for Jesse Williams) and Robert Harting with the discuss gold medal. There are still some events left for even more medals (men's and women's javelin, men's pole vault, women's high jump, women's long jump).
