Does anyone know how many black quarterbacks have been picked number 1 in the history of the NFL? Newton and Russell are all I can think of. McNabb was picked number 2 and Vince Young no 3.

Im glad Scam went first overall. Its proves beyond a shadow of any doubt that the NFL is ridiculous. Even the most drunk, brainwashed idiots must notice the Newton-Tebow-McCoy double standards.

Akili Smith was picked behind Tim Couch and cried racism and that he would come back every year to prove that pick wrong. And yes it was because he was white because McNabb was picked number 2 and he didn't have a problem with the Eagles taking McNabb over him. Tim Couch actually wasn't as bad as people make him out to be. He showed promise his rookie year, he was on a pathetic team and got injured quite often because of the line. He at least threw for 3k in one season and led his team to one playoff appearance before injuries pile up, I think he tore his rotator cuff and was never the same. Akili had the occasional highlight play early on (like 3 or 4) in his brief career, but for the most part sucked and was out of the league with only 17 starts in 4 years.

McNabb was drafted into a great environment, something that Couch didn't have, and something that Newton won't have with Carolina.

The concerns about Smith? his inexperience, he started at qb in a d1 program for only one year, and many concerns were if he a one year wonder. Sound familiar? I think Smith would be a better comparison for Newton rather than Jamarcus. Jamarcus was big with an arm like Mallet, with less accuracy and horrible work ethic, even while he was in college there were concerns. Smith also had similar athleticism to Newton, running around a 4.6

So as far as black qbs being the number 1 overall pick, I think its a recent trend, im pretty sure only Newton and Russel.

Falcons really screwed p by giving up so much to get a wide receiver.

I also can't believe the Redskins picked a white player.

Don't worry they'll probably draft another black QB(Kaepernick or Taylor).

I'm crossing my fingers about the Redskins. Shanahan quietly whitened up the offensive line over last season, and benched Mcnabb. Hopefully they go for Dalton or Mallet if they take a QB.
Biggest upside so far is of course 9 whites taken in 1st round. Main downside so far is Cowboys and Packers taking black offensive tackles. Offset somewhat by the Bears taking Carimi, and Colts taking Costanza.

Ponder and Locker are being called the biggest reaches in the draft. Many of the "experts" expected both of them to be second round picks or late first round picks. Meanwhile Scam Newton being drafted to the Panthers absolutely ruins Clausens career, at least for now. Newton will be given at least five seasons as a starter even if he fails miserably. Clausen's only hope is that he gets traded to another team like the Vikings.

I'm hoping to see Kyle Rudolph get picked in the early 2nd round. Any guesses on where he will be going?

Saints might pick Rudolph. Payton loves tight ends. He is the complete package with blocking and receiving. They just drafted Jimmy Graham but he is just a wide receiver, he can't block. They also have Dave Thomas who has done well when used as receiving threat, but could still use another tight end.

I've heard nothing about this defensive lineman from Nebraska, Jared Crick (sp?), who was Suh's team mate last year. I thought he was considered a highly regarded prospect, so why no mention?

Crick is going to play his senior season. He'll be in the draft in 2012.

I have a feeling JJ Watt is going to be a beast. The guy put up 34 bench reps, has a 37 inch vertical, and runs a 4.84 40 at almost 300lbs. That's insanely good! He just needs to beat out the very average Antonio Smith in camp.

My only concern for Watt is that he is Houston is transitioning to the 3-4. Defensive Ends in that system usually do the dirty work and get none of the glory. He would have been an excellent fit for a 4-3 team. Mario Williams was similar at 290 and taken number 2 overall, but at least Watt is versatile enough to excel at either and luckily they are white friendly, so if he is doing all the grunt work it will leave guys like Barwin and Cushing free to make plays. He can still get sacks as a 3-4 guy, just won't be as much as one in the 4-3.

Watching ESPN, and they were interviewing Brent Musberger about the draft.
I was happy to hear him speaking highly about Andy Dalton and especially about Jeff Maehl!

As a 3-4 end Watt will be an absolute run stuffer, I think he could rack upsome very high tackling numbers for an end. But as you mentioned yeah Watt could have put up much higher sack numbers as a 4-3 end. On the bright side they think he's a good enough athlete to playbasically the same position oppoiste ofMario Williams, who also is a freak athlete. The Texans D should be very fun to watch next year!

I don't think he'll have any trouble beating out Antonio Smith for the starting job. Smith has averaged around only 4 sacks every season. He's very average at best.

Nice posts in this thread, Snow.

FYI â€" Texans DE Mario Williams was actually the 1st overall pick out of NC State, Reggie Bust was 2nd overall.

I wonder how long it's been since the Redskins have drafted a non-QB white player in the 1st round?

In 1966 we drafted a white player in the first round.... a kicker.

In 1968 we drafted a DB of unknown race, James McCoy Smith. I can't find any pictures of him online.

Since then we have spent only two 1st round picks on white players, both QBs.

There were some long stretches in the 70s and 80s where we traded away all our first rounders.

He was known as Jim "Yazoo" Smith because he was born in Yazoo City, Mississippi. Smith was black, as I recall. I think an injury shortened his career.

I just did a quick Google search on "Yazoo" Smith. It refreshed my memory. Smith had a neck injury that effectively ended his career in the 14th game of the 1968 season. In 1970, he sued the NFL seeking to outlaw the draft which according to the suit, prevented the player from selling himself to the highest bidder.

Glad the Bengalstook Dalton rather than Kaepernick. And now hopefully Palmer can continue and revive his career starting for another team.

what a horrible pick by the 49er's, Kaepernick sucks, overrated, helped by his backs. Is Harbaugh even making the final decisions for the draft? The guy basically is a really poor man's Tebow, the guys mechanics are worse than Tebow's coming out, except Tebow worked on it. Colin is also thin, like a bean pole.

Whats up with the Browns? Pick somebody up to help Peyton Hillis and McCoy.
