well one reason he could have ran a 4.57, bad form, you are in a 3 point stance and have to come out of it, running on the football field is different than track, plus nerves. Blacks want to claim they do low on iq tests because of the pressure, well theres the pressure for Whites to be sub 4.5
EDIT: white lightning beat me to it about the form
I was thinking the same thing about the possibility of the pressure, knowing that they are considered inferior and have to prove themselves. I saw some study where white students were told right before they took a math test that Asians do much better than white people and they would be getting compared to Asians....their scores dropped something like 15%.
Tebow had a decent time, but what I consider most impressive was his start. When he took off I thought, "wow, he's looking fast," and the commentator pretty much said the same thing, then Tebow seemed to slow down the more he ran. You'd much rather have a guy be faster in his first 10 yards than last 30. You combine that with his vertical and it shows the explosiveness that will allow him to be at least as effective as Vince Young running the ball in the NFL.
I think the pressure does get to some of them, but of course dwfs would scoff at that idea. The 40 yard time is ridiculous, these guys are proven on the field. The one White guy that could have definitely gotten 4.3 didn't get invited, Jake Sharp. I think these guys will probably put up 4.4's during their pro day when there isn't as much pressure. However the dwfs will believe that pressure to perform affects some of the black players, LaFell ran a 4.6 even and Gilyard who promised he would run a 4.35 ran a 4.56, and they marked it down to "nerves" and bad form
I agree the first 10 yards are most important. Yeah people don't realize how explosive Tebow is, he doesn't look it on the field because of long strides but he is. He has tons of runs in the 10 to 20 yard range. You are right his vertical shows that he is explosive, but people are so hung up on 40 yard times, when the record for 30+yard td runs in a season is 7, stood at 6 for the longest time with Jim Brown. And the 40 yard times only matter when an afflete does well, if he doesnt its "hes fast on the football field", Whites don't get that same treatment. Toby Gerhart also has a great burst, 50 runs for over 10 yards. I am thinking Tebow could actually be a halfback in the NFL if he wanted to. Id like to see him there, although many on here want to see him at quarterback.
I keep wondering why McGaha didnt run the 40? he had a 40 inch vertical and 10'2 broad jump, he could have ran a 4.4 with those numbers. Maybe he was injured, but you only hear of injuries to "big name affletes"
Edit: I think Shipley does have some issues with being nervous, he just slipped running a route which I have never seen him do in his career. He needs to calm down a little bit. I know he is probably upset over the 40. Some coaches think that players who get nervous during the combine will get nervous during game time, but its two totally different situations imo, espescially for Whites. We've seen all the articles about White players needing to prove themselves at the combine, although they are already proven on the football field. Shipley has always came up big in big games, McCoy went out during the National Championship and he still made big plays.
