<div></div>Iowa is one of the fairer programs in the country. Brandon Wegher at RB and Colin Sandeman at WR are not listed as starters but will receive a lot of playing time this year.
<div>12 White starters.</div>
<div>Offense</div>
<div>QB- Ricky Stanzi</div>
<div>FB- Brett Morse (6'3 240)</div>
<div>TE- Allen Resiner(6'3 235) is slated to start but will be pushed by the number 2 TE coming out of high school C.J Fiedorowicz(6'7 250)</div>
<div>LT- Riley Reiff(6'6 290)
G- Nolan MacMillan (6'6 288)
</div>
<div>C- James Ferentz(6'2 265) or Josh Koeppel (6'2 267)</div>
<div>RT- Markus Zusevics (6'5 280)</div>
<div>* Iowa's OL situation is a mess. A lot of guys will be competing and no one has really established themselves besides Reiff. So my point is, a lot of flip flopping and switching out of different guys will be common until they find the right group.</div>
<div></div>
<div>Defense</div>
<div>DT- Karl Klug (6'4 258)</div>
<div>OLB- Tyler Nielsen(6'4 232)</div>
<div>MLB- Jeff Tarpinian(6'3 233)</div>
<div>SS- Tyler Sash(6'1 210)</div>
<div>FS- Brett Greenwood(6'0 200)</div>
<div>*Troy Johnson will be a key backup at LB </div>Edited by: celticdb15

How is Sandeman not a starter? He's going to be a junior and should be starting. He has legit NFL speed(4.5 range) and even Scout and Rivals acknowledge this.

Great work, celticdb15! Wow, even with uncertainty on the O-line, Iowa has dropped off quite a bit. Since '05 they've had 11, 13, 15, 15, and 14 White starters. I sure hope it ends up higher than 11 this season.

Wegher was basically a starter last season (he evenly split carries with Adam Robinson). IMO Wegher is the most talented of Iowa's three best tailbacks, when you consider Wegher's measurables, game film and that he had a 70+ yard TD called back last year and dominated in the Orange Bowl after struggling mid season with injured ribs.

Unfortunately with Jewel Hampton coming back this year, Wegher could fall to 3rd string since he is the youngest of the three. Hampton averaged 5.1 YPC (I believe) during the 2008 season. Wegher averaged 4 YPC last year, although the o-line play wasn't quite as good, and he is the youngest- so I wouldn't be surprised if Wegher falls to third down back this year. I expect him to have a featured role though before his time at Iowa is up.

Colin Sandeman should be the slot WR this year- and he'll probably play enough that you could probably list him as a starter.

Funny thing, 50 years ago, Iowa was about the "blackest" major college team in the country. There was a black QB named Wilburn Hollis and halfbacks Larry Ferguson and Willie Fleming. In 1960, they played single-platoon foorball in which the players played both ways. I believe Iowa's 1960 starting 11 was majority black, possible the first team to be so.

Correction. Fleming didn't play in 1960, his last year at Iowa was 1958. Hollis and Ferguson were Iowa's big stars in 1960.

Maybe Iowa is a fan of underdogs? Back then, with the way society was, you could say black football players "at times" could be underdogs- particularly at QB. Now black athletes are basically never underdogs IN ANY U.S SPORT.

Jewel Hampton Arrested for Fighting</font>

Some bad news for the Iowa Hawkeyes early Saturday, as running back Jewel Hampton was arrested following his alleged involvement in a bar fight near campus near campus.

Hampton, 20, was charged with public intoxication and underage
presence at a liquor establishment after his arrest at 1:46 a.m.
Saturday. He was booked at the Johnson County jail at 2:42 a.m. and
released at 3:15 a.m.

Iowa City police officers responded to Vito's, a restaurant and bar
in Iowa City, following reports of a large fight at the back of the bar.

"Based on their investigation, officers determined that Mr. Hampton
was actively involved in several physical confrontations
within the
bar," Iowa City police Lt. Bill Campbell told ESPN.com.

Another Iowa player, junior cornerback Jordan Bernstine, was also
arrested at the bar and charged with public intoxication. Bernstine was
booked under his given name, Jordan Morris.

Hampton is in the mix for Iowa's starting job this season after
missing all of 2009 with a knee injury. He went through spring ball and
did everything but full-contact drills. The Indianapolis native entered
last summer as the frontrunner for the starting job before injuring his
knee, first in July during voluntary workouts and then again during
preseason camp. Hampton backed up Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year
Shonn Greene in 2008 and rushed for 463 yards and seven touchdowns.

Hampton is expected to compete with Adam Robinson and Brandon Wegher for the top job in 2010.

Bernstine also was a candidate for a starting spot in 2009 before
breaking his ankle in August and missing the season.

Iowa had enjoyed a long stretch without off-field incidents after
seeing a large group of players make the police blotter between 2006-08.
It will be interesting to see how Ferentz handles Hampton's and
Bernstine's arrests.

UPDATE: Ferentz issued the following statement
regarding Hampton and Bernstine early Saturday afternoon.

<blockquote>"I am aware of the incident involving Jordan Bernstine
and Jewel Hampton Friday evening and at this time I am in the process of
gathering all the facts concerning the incident. Until I have all the
facts, I'll have no further comment and the incident will be handled
internally."</blockquote></div>*************************************************************************
What a "Jewel". Hopefully good news for Wegher.

I was going through Iowa's roster and it looks like they have a lot of white underclassmen on the d-line which is always a good thing

And supposedly this team had no room for phenom Nile Knapp?
smiley7.gif
Coach Ferentz this is a cry out to you- "it still is not too late to offer Mr. Knapp, who's a scatback with the rushing ability of Lache Seastrunk!"

Anyway, Hampton only has him self to blame for this. In a fair world- this puts Robinson and Wegher as the front runners to evenly split carries again, going into the summer, with Hampton being third on the depth chart (or a third down back) for the time being.

We'd have no better team to cheer for than Iowa if they offered Nile Knapp this year- along with their offer to phenom Cam McDaniel for next year! Even though Ferentz is one of the most fair FBS coaches, he still is NOT completely fair. The Iowa starting 22 is only 50% white this year in our 75% white country.

Brandon Wegher not practicing

Iowa running back Brandon Wegher isn't practicing with the team for undisclosed reasons, according to multiple media reports.

An unnamed source tells The (Cedar Rapids) Gazette that Wegher's status with the team is unclear, although the issue isn't related to academics. An Iowa spokesman told ESPN.com earlier Tuesday that Wegher's status hasn't changed "at this time."

Wegher appeared in every game last season and made two starts for Iowa, setting a team freshman record with eight rushing touchdowns. He attended Iowa's preseason media day Friday.

The sophomore is expected to compete with Adam Robinson and Jewel Hampton for Iowa's starting running back spot. Wegher had 641 rush yards and 967 all-purpose yards last year, including 113 rush yards and a touchdown in Iowa's Orange Bowl victory against Georgia Tech.

Head coach Kirk Ferentz isn't expected to address Wegher's situation Tuesday, although a portion of practice is open to the media.

If a player misses Fall practice, there's really no chance he will play (if he's white).

Maybe coach Ferentz is pulling a Les Miles- ie. reward a white back who earns it as an upper classmen. He may realize that Jewel Hampton was a little more efficient as a freshman than Brandon and be trying to give Hampton back his #2 RB spot he lost due to injury, but maybe telling Wegher he will be rewarded next year if Hampton leaves. Maybe they are even thinking of red-shirting Brandon so there will be more playing time available for him in the future, maybe things got nasty between him and Ferentz and Brandon is being punished.

Like I said- I think Brandon's season last year was better than his stats indicate. His longest run was called back on a BS penalty. He hurt his ribs mid-season making him run a little more timid during a slump in the middle-late season, the o-line play wasn't quite as good as the prior year- and lastly- he finished off the year VERY strong. Ferentz may be playing the reward the older player game- with his hand being forced some if there is a close competition- since Wegher is white.

I think Wegher has to stick with Iowa- unless he had a real falling out with Ferentz. There are few better schools in the FBS, with a large fan base like Iowa, where he'll get noticed- for a white RB to go.Edited by: ToughJ.Riggins

That is exactly what I've been thinking Jtough. Why have your top 3 RBs all in the same academic class? It just doesn't make any sense. A smart coach knows he needs to spread his talent out so that it all doesn't leave the same year. I actually would love for Wegher to be redshirted. There's nothing wrong with taking a year off to hit the weight room up in order to get bigger/faster/stronger. Wegher then would have no competition for playing time in terms of guys who are in the same "class" year as him.

Rivals just updated Iowa's depth chart today and list a fourth white offensive lineman, Nolan Macmillan, as starter, as a guard.

Thanks ref, looks like Iowa is up to 12 white starters. The hawkeyes would be even more fun to watch if Wegher played this year. Some good news though is that both Sash and Greenwood's backups are white. Tanner Miller(6'2 195) backs up Greenwood at FS and Nick Nielsen(6'3 210) backs up Sash at SS. Both are young guys with good size and I look forward to watching them play and carry on the tradition of great white safeties at Iowa in the upcoming years.

The one incredible thing is that both Greenwood and Sash should get drafted. When was the last time two white defensive backs on the same college team got drafted? I'm sure it's been a while. Sash is currently the second ranked SS according to some sites and Greenwood the 10th free safety.

Hampton's season is over.

Jewel Hampton to have ACL surgery

Iowa running back Jewel Hampton will miss the rest of the season after suffering a torn ACL in his left knee in Saturday's loss to Arizona.

Iowa has only one healthy proven running back in sophomore Adam Robinson. Paki O'Meara suffered a concussion against Arizona and will miss this week's game against Ball State.

"We've got Adam, and anyone else that wants to volunteer," Ferentz said.

True freshman Marcus Coker should be ready to return this week after suffering a shoulder injury early in preseason camp."

Karma's a bitch, Kirk.
If you had given Knapp a scholarship, you'd have a superstar ready to step up and dominate.
Iowa will probably still be ok, with a veteran QB keeping them on track.

Nile Knapp would have looked GREAT splitting carries with Adam Robinson as Iowa's scatback about now. The freshman that Kirk brought in are simply not on the same level as Knapp. Knapp is a truly special player that could have complimented the tough as nails, hard nosed running- Robinson perfectly, while Knapp learned to take on a heavier load. Would it be too late for Ferentz to change his foolish mind and try to pry Knapp out of Lindenwood to come to Iowa on scholarship? From looking around the web, I believe Financial hardship was the biggest reason that Knapp didn't come to Iowa- rather than feeling unwanted.

Well, Nile doesn't play for Lindenwood.
He's not even on their roster. Can't be a redshirting issue, either, because all of the other freshmen are listed.
Either he quit football or he never made it to Lindenwood. There wouldn't be any athletic scholarship involved. He might have gotten an academic scholarship. Or maybe he just couldn't afford college and is working now. To be honest, a full time job is far more valuable than a "college education" these days, unless you're in a pre-professional program.

i am surprised no one is talking about the Iowa defense ...

the Hawkeyes currently have the #1 Overall defense in college football. they allow barely over 10 points-per-game, and they also have the #2 Rush defense. oh, and they start at least 5 White "overachievers" in every contest, and 6 when leading tackler (and safety-turned-linebacker)Jeff Tarpinian gets the nod.

the two White safeties, Sash and Greenwood, are very, very good ballhawks. they'll knock your head off, too.
