2010-2011 Butler Bulldogs
The Runners up in the Big Dance a year ago figure to make a run again this year. Powering the Bulldogs is forward Matt Howard. Howard is an athletic playmaker, who has a shot to be in the NBA when all is said and done. When Matt Howard and Shelvin Mack(black) are clicking, Butler is very exciting to watch. Joining Howard in the starting lineup in junior forward Garrett Butcher, who replaces lottery pick Gordon Hayward in the starting lineup. I don't know much about Butcher, but hopefully he can help Butler to another run in the big dance. Butler has a few white players that should see significant time off the bench, including sharpshooter Zach Hahn. Hahn can be deadly from three point range. Sophomore center Andrew Smith got some good minutes off the bench in the Bulldog's first game of the year, and should continue to see minutes off the bench. Guard Chase Stigall and freshman forwar Erik Fromm also saw some time for the Bulldogs. So with two white starters, and four whites who come of the bench, the Bulldogs are definatly a team to cheer for.
2010-2011 Notre Dame Fighting Irish
Notre Dame should be a caste football favorite again this year, with SG Ben Hansbrough leading the way. Hansbrough is of course the brother of Pacers forward and UNC legend Tyler. On the young season, Ben is averaging 19.5 points for the first two games. Joining Hansbrough is Power forward Tim Abromaitis. Abromaitis could have a breakout year in store for the Irish. He's averaging 11.5 ppg, and 6 rpg on the young season. 6-8 guard Scott Martin is also starting for the Irish. White players off the bench who should make some contributions are forwards Jack Cooley, Mike Broghammer, and Tom Knight, in addition to freshman guard Alex Dragicevich. Hopefully, the Irish can make some noise in the Big East this year, and the Big Dance.
2010-2011 Louisville Cardinals
The sky must be falling or pigs flying, because Rick Pitino looks to give five whites playing time, including 2 white starters for the time being. Kyle Kuric is the starter at one of the guard spots, with Stephan Van Treese starting at forward. Off the bench for the Cardinals comes deadly shooter Mike Marra who went 6-8 on 3 pointers in the first game of the year.
Guards Elisha Justice and Tim Henderson come off the bench as well for the Cardinals. Hopefully, the Cardinals tear up the Big East this year.
2010-2011 Illinois Fighting Illini
This year, the Fighting Illini should give about as many or more white players time as Ron Zook's Fighting Zulus football team does, which is five. The Illini open the year with two white starters, in foward Bill Cole and center Mike Tisdale, who's average nearly 8 rebounds and 9 ppg so far this year. Guard Kevin Barardini has been used sparingly in the first three games. Center Meyers Leonard and Forward Tyler Griffey have each logged about 50 minutes in the Illini's first three games. Illinois should be an O.K. team to cheer for this year.
2010-2011 Michigan State Spartans
The No. 2 ranked Spartans enter the year with one white starter in a battle at center to keep it, sophomore Garrick Sherman. Sherman is athletic, and hopefully can develop into a top player for Tom Izzo. Anyway, off the bench comes senior guard Mike Kebler, who hopefully, finally gets a shot at good playing time this year. Guard Austin Thorton also comes off the bench getting nearly 24 minutes a game so far this year. Center Anthony Ianni also gets a minute here and there in the game. Three whites(one starts) who get good time and one with a few scraps makes the Spartans a watchable team this year.
2010-2011 Ohio State Buckeyes
The Buckeyes come into the season starting two whites in guard Jon Diebler and PG Aaron Craft. Diebler is the 3-point guy for the Buckeyes. Freshman point guard Aaron Kraft also starts for the Buckeyes. I haven't seen him play, so I can't comment on him. The only other white guy on the roster is junior foward Nikola Kecman, from Serbia.
2010-2011 Northern Iowa Panthers
Fresh off a tourney upset of the No. 1 seeded Kansas Jayhawks in the Big Dance, the Northern Iowa Panthers look to make it back tot he big dance this year. The Panthers again look to start four whites this year. Jake Koch and Lucas O'Rear start at the forward spots for Northern Iowa. Johnny Moran and Kerwin Dunham start at two of the guard spots. Center Austin Pehl comes off the bench when the Panthers need size on the court, and he's their biggest guy at 6'10, 245. Lack of a 7'0 guy could hurt Northern Iowa when they go up against better competition. Chip Rank and Marc Sonnen also will provide support off the bench for UNI. Hopefully, they can make another tourney run this year.
2010-2011 St. Mary's Gaels
St. Mary's open the season Friday, after their Sweet 16 run in the NCAA Tourney a year ago. St. Mary's only starts two whites this year, after having an all-white squad upset Villanova last year. 6-7 Forward Clint Steindl is one of the white starters. Terrific and athletic guard Mickey McConnell, who has a deadly 3 point shot, will also start again this year for the Gaels. St. Mary's will have plenty of white talent coming off the bench however, with sophomore guards Jordan Page and Aussie Matthew Dellavedova coming into the game. They will be joined off the bench by forwards Mitchell Young and Phil Benson. Dellavedova may be in a battle with black freshman Stephen Holt for the other starting guard job. At any rate, Dellavedova should be on the court a lot. With 2-3 white starters and 3-4 white players coming off the bench, St. Mary's remains a good team to support this year.
2010-2011 Wisconsin Badgers
After getting beaten by Cornell in the 2nd round of the NCAA Tourney last year, the Wisconsin Badgers have their sites set higher this year. The Badgers start four white players in the early part of the year, hopefully it stays that way. Leading the Badgers this year is forward Jon Leur, the athletic forward for the Badgers is their go-to guy, at least in the early going. He scored 22 points, and dished out 7 assists in the route of North Dakota today. Leur can also shoot the three. Fellow forwards Mike Bruesewitz and Keaton Nankivil join Leur in the lineup. Nankivil can also score a lot of points, with 17 of them tonight. He shot 7-8 on field goals tonight. Guard Josh Gasser completes the Badger's starting compliment of white players.
The Badgers get some support off the bench too. Tim Jarmusz gets a lot of minutes off the bench, and can shoot the ball well, going 4-4 on field goals today. Ben Valentyn and Ben Brust also get a few minutes off the bench. Several other white players get some garbage minutes in addition to the guys I mentioned. With four white starters, and 3 whites that come in off the bench, Wisconsin should easily be a team to root hard for this year.
2010-2011 Hawaii Warriors
The Warriors beat Central Michigan by two points last night, with three white starters in the lineup, and several others off the bench. Hiram Thompson is the teams starting point guards, he was 5-6 on field goals last night. Junior Zane Johnson starts at the other guard spot, and Bill Amiss starts at forward. Trevor Wisemen, Bo Barnes, and Douglas Kurtz come of the bench for Hawaii. Hopefully, Hawaii can win the WAC this year and make the Big Dance with the white players they let play.
