Chase Blackburn will be starting in place of the suspended Michael Boley. He beat out two black LBs but RotoWorld reminds us to have low expectations for the overachiever. Unfortunately Boley's suspension is only one game:

<DIV =s_pNewsTextMain>It's more of an indictment of the preseason play of Bryan Kehl and Gerris Wilkinson. Blackburn is a natural middle linebacker. Don't expect big numbers out of him against the Redskins.

Chase Blackburn has started three games in place of Michael Boley, the season opener in which Boley was suspended, and the past two games after Boley was injured. In those three starts Blackburn has 15 solo tackles, 9 assisted tackles, and half a sack. Blackburn never gets any respect yet he looks to be a better and more consistent linebacker than Boley. But you can bet it'll be right back to the bench when Boley's healthy.

As someone who watches the Giants on a regular basis, I can tell you that Blackburn has outplayed Boley. Blackburn also has outplayed other super scrubs like Carlos Emmons, Gerris Wilkinson, Danny Clark & Lavar Arrington over the years but remained only a WSTD. I hope the Giants finally wake up and start him over Boley, Clark or even Pierce who looks old and slow.

*Not to nitpick but Chase has 1 1/2 sacks in starts this season*

Blackburn is the starting weakside 'backer. I've watched him since the Giants picked him up as an UFA out of Akron, where he was a stud.
The Giants are now being blasted for "passing too much", with the white QB taking all of the blame. Last time I looked, the only white pass catcher on the team is Kevin Boss, who is great. The rest of the bunch are typical "affletes". Sure, Eli can throw a bad ball now and then, but Manningham is a terrible route runner, Steve Smith really is too slow, although a decent route guy with good hands, and it goes downhill from there (Hakeem Nicks, Derek Hagan, Dominik Hixon, Ramses Barden, and Sinorice Moss). Ho hum, looks like another team that could really use the services of Matt Jones, but I doubt they'll call.

FootballDad some people predicted before the season started that Kevin Boss would be the leading receiver on the Giants.  I expected that too but Steve Smith already has 53 catches to Boss's 17.  They need to get Boss more involved.

They keep Boss blocking quite a bit, especially since he has to take an inordinate number of plays helping out the sumo RT McKenzie. That will really dig into the amount of possible receptions. As for Steve Smith, when he was at USC, he was effectively their "white guy", the slot guy who make the clutch, non-flashy plays as he played second fiddle to Dwayne Jarrett, Patrick Turner, and, of course, Reggie Bush.

I think Steve Smith ran a 4.44 at the NFL combine if I'm not mistaken, so he's not slow. Mario Manningham is a bit of a headcase and after making a couple spectacular catches he'll drop a couple easy ones. Manningham ran a 4.59 at the NFL combine, the same time as Hass, although Manningham went sub 4.5 at his Pro Day where Hass ran a 4.56. Manningham is a a 6 foot receiver with some serious route running ability and agility, who doesn't have great speed. Sounds a lot like Hass, except Hass has much better hands and is tougher and stronger. Hass also didn't "flip out" at a draft analyst who criticized him for smoking too much Ganja before the draft during some interview like I heard "Super" Mario did.

That is a great 3-cone time for Smith. The guy has a lot of talent, but the Giants would have been much better if they combined Smith at #2 with Matt Jones as the #1- and brought Mike Hass in for the slot role instead of Manningham at the start of this season. This would put Manningham at #5, behind "hype boy- not better than Collie- Nicks" at #4 while they "develop" Mr. small school "upside" Ramses Barden (aka Plaxico clone) in the last WR spot. I think GM Jerry Reese is a racist black man- which is why my former 2nd team, the Packers, in now my favorite. The Giants have gotten blacker in the last two years.

Smith is a good receiver. The others flash talent but aren't consistent. That's not atypical of black athletes, but the DWFs and media always focus on the nice plays and ignore or quickly forget all the bad ones. Nicks might turn out to be good also as he's just a rookie. I agree that Boss has been very underutilized as he has all the tools to be a successful receiving TE.

Yeah, I have to admit I ranked Nicks only one spot behind Collie in my rankings. I think Collie was my #5 WR prospect and Nicks was my #6. It was a mistake jumping Hayward-Bey to #4- ahead of Collie based on fast times and hype at the last minute. DraftDaddy also likes Hayward-Bey, which may have influenced me. And you have to remember Bey isn't helped by having "JaFARCus" as his QB. I think Nicks could be good, but my point is Hass and Matt Jones would help the Giants out more "right now". I'm not a fan of Jerry Reese at all.

Look how the Chiefs immediately jumped on Chris Chambers after he was released by the Chargers. Chambershas been going downhill for years, especially last season and this one. My guess now is that Jones will be persecuted this entire season then be signed in '10 by some team as a "long shot" free agent.

Good news for Chase Blackburn. If he can do well at MLB it will be hard to deny him a starting position among the Giants linebackers next season:

The Giants announced late Friday that MLB Antonio Pierce will be out indefinitely after a bulging disc was discovered in Pierce's neck. Pierce was "shocked" by the news. He practiced on Friday, but experienced discomfort afterwards and was hospitalized for tests. An MRI revealed the injury, which may threaten Pierce's season. His loss is a blow to a Giants run defense that has underachieved all year. Chase Blackburn will likely take over in the middle, with Michael Boley now healthy at weak-side linebacker

Pierce has been put on IR, and a rotoworld report mentioned that with a fat contract due him in 2010 he might not be back next year. Hopefully all this will help entrench Blackburn as a starting linebacker going forward.

Starting with his last few years in Jacksonville, Tom Coughlin has gone to a formula of starting Whites only at QB, TE and the o-line, and none anywhere else. His teams are the most predictable that way of any. Which means Chase Blackburn is going to be screwed no matter how good he is, and he's been very good every time he plays:


<H1>Second-year linebacker Jonathan Goff could be Antonio Pierce's replacement for New York Giants</H1>



Now that Antonio Pierce is officially gone for the season, the Giants might be ready to take a look toward the future.


Jonathan Goff, a second-year pro out of Vanderbilt who could be Pierce's long-term replacement, took some reps with the first team at middle linebacker during practice Wednesday and might get the start there on Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys. He would replace veteran Chase Blackburn, who has started for Pierce the last two games.


Both Goff and Blackburn said they haven't been officially told a switch will be made. If it is, however, Blackburn is sure the 6-2, 236-pound Goff will be set.


"He's always ready," Blackburn said. "He prepared hard. He knows what he's doing."

Only in the NFL can a complete bust get rewarded like this. Maybe because he's Santana's little brother, "Sinorice" will get four more seasons to try and "develop," all 5' 8" of him:

Giants re-signed restricted free agent WR Sinorice Moss to a one-year, $1.176 million contract. The former No. 44 overall pick has shown no signs of development in four years as a pro. Moss, 26, appeared in just eight games last season, catching all of one pass for 18 yards. He has an uphill climb to make the team.

Kevin Boss should be fine, but sumo Kevin Boothe is expected to miss at least 4 months. Maybe a few White lineman will get more reps now.

I've heard his name mentioned many times by the announcers, of course, but I've never checked his profile before. Apparently, he wasn't born in the USA. He's an almagamation from Germany:

Someone at the practice said he wasn't even touched when he got injured. He has never been anything special as a wideout, less than 1,000 career yards (788). It's one less mulatto for the media to worship, as far as I'm concerned.
