Some sites have Olsen running a 4.4 at the Combine. Those are incredible numbers for a guy who is 252lbs. At this point anywhere would be a better fit than in Hatie Smiff's offense.

I think Olsen ran an official 4.51 if I recall. I believe his hand time was as fast as 4.48 though.

On a fair team Craig Steltz is easily a starter at safety...hopefully it's his job for good; but the dearth of dwf's will haveunder the microscope looking for any mis-steps the slow white boy might have....he will have to play near Pro-Bowl level for the jock sniffers...he could be among the NFL INT Leaders if he starts all 16 games...
The Bears know they must have Mr.Urlacher back if they are gonna have a chance!

What's the status of DT Dusty Dvoracek?? It's a shame he can't stay healthy; he's a disrupting force/impact player!

How many 1/2 dozens years is Hatie Smiff going have to reach his potenial as a SuperBowl winner given his record recently? I suspect at least two 1/2 dozem more! Man its great being a negro coach and affelet in today's NFL. You can suck as a coach and be a self professed cancer on a team, then instantly get picked up by a another affeletic team. If your white on probation, have a sip of beer, your out of the league for at least a year. Now that is fair, "White man be f'ing wiff us too long". NOT!

Dan Pompei of the Chicago Tribune is hearing that the Bears want to see Craig Steltz at free safety.

Starting Steltz at free safety this season could be a recipe for disaster. He's an intimidating hitter, but is often exposed in coverage and doesn't have much agility or speed. The Bears should continue to look to bring in safety help from the outside, possibly in the third round of this week's draft.

at least they give him credit for being an intimidating hitter... but just how in hell is he going to be worse than Al Afalava who they had at FS last season?

I think he should be given every opportunity to start given that both Payne and Afalava started for almost a full season each and apparently didn't impress enough for the coaches. I remember when he was drafted Mel Kiper said Steltz reminded him of Doug Plank. Bears coaches rate Steltz as one of their top two safeties at the moment -- at which position is less clear. But from what I've been hearing they want to see him at free safety. Steltz did a nice job when he played late in the season. He has good instincts and he does not make mental mistakes very often. He also is a big hitter -- hence the comparison to Plank. But I don't believe he has the speed, range and coverage skills the Bears need in a free safety. That's why they still are looking. Eventually, maybe he settles in at strong. The bottom line is we have not yet seen enough of Steltz to really know what he can or can't be.Edited by: backrow

He doesn't "look" like he has much speed or agility because of the unnaturally light (for a DB) skin tone. He ran a 4.6 40, a 4.19 short shuttle, and a 7.03 3-cone with a 35" vertical and a 9'10" broad jump on his pro day in 2008. At that same pro day, "speedy" WR teammate Early Doucet only managed 4.59 40, 4.45 SS, 7.4 3C, 34.5VJ, and 9'6"BJ. Who's more agile and explosive? But Craig is slow, non-agile, and only good because he's a "big hitter".
