    2010 Week 15

It wouldn't have been any different for the Vikings tonight with a black RB.

    Peyton Hillis

In the 1990 book, "The Pro Football Chronicle," it was written that Craig James was the last white RB to gain a thousand yards. The authors meant last as in it would never happen again.

    2010 Week 15

An exciting game any way you look at it.

    2010 Week 15

When Kuhn propels himself forward like on this TD, he has power. When hurdling, he doesn't.
  5. S

    Peyton Hillis

Hillis may not last very long with the hurdling. He doesn't have any power in the air, is wide open for a knee injury, and is more prone to fumbling.Edited by: sport historian

    Grim Sleeper--Just heard about this

When Franklin was arrested in July, it received a little national publicity, but was mostly an LA story. There was a segment on HLN tonight on the subject.

    Nils Lofgren on Vick

I recall a sentence in a Sport Magazine article 40-odd years ago. It went something like, "Playing quarterback for the Eagles makes you a target for every loud-mouthed malcontent in Philadelphia." As you know from my posts, I have a very LONG memory.

    2010 Redskins

Offhand, I can't recall players on a team with a losing record complaining when the QB is benched. It would seem possible if the QB had made the team a winner in the past, but McNabb hasn't even been on the Redskins until this season.

    Bob Feller passes!

I read Bob Feller's autobiography, "Strikeout Story," when I was about 12 years old. It was in the school library. I saw him in person in 1980 when he pitched in an old-timers game. It was in Nashville, TN. Bob Feller liked to appear at events like this at a minor-league ball park, I've read. He...

Bill Glass On Race In Pro Football

In another thread, I referred to a book by former DE Bill Glass in which he tells how coaches handled race relations during the 1960's. I went to a local college library and checked out the book, "Don't Blame The Game." It was published in 1972. The book's structure has the co-author asking...

    2010 Week 14

It was a loss to a 2-10 team. Not good under any circumstances. Edited by: sport historian

    2010 Week 14

A great running back is supposed to perform in these kind of conditions.

    2010 Week 14

If Hillis keeps jumping, he will likely be injured. That being said, it is hard for a RB to change his style. He had better work on holding the ball.

MLB Network Airing 1960 Game 7

Don, Thanks for posting this. You beat me to it. I vividly remember this game. I saw it on TV in 1960, age 10.

Whatever Manning said to White is nothing to what Norm Van Brocklin, Bobby Lane, Y.A. Tittle, or even Don Meredith would have.

Super Bowl '85: The official start of the Caste Fo

I recall Sports Illustrated stated in 1979 that pro football was becoming "pro basketball in shoulder pads." In other words, pro football was now or soon would be a mainly black sport.

    2010 Denver Broncos

The book by Bill Glass I referred to is titled: "Don't blame the game; an answer to super star swingers and a look at what's right with sports." The main bad guy in this 1972 book is Joe Namath. Glass' book was slightly controversial at the time. He wrote that "swingers" like Namath were...

    2010 Denver Broncos

In the early 70s, I read a book by Bill Glass, the former Cleveland Brown DE who became a full-time evangelist after retiring from football. The book was about declining moral values, but Glass had some things to say about football and race. Glass wrote that from around the mid-60s, the...

    2010 Denver Broncos

I've seen this for almost 50 years. When a coach "loses" the players, the team goes bad and he is soon fired. The players will say they are glad he's gone. It was like this when pro football was heavily white.

    Don Meredith: 1938-2010

Don raises an interesting question. Was Don Meredith as fed up with the direction of the NFL as we are? I remember a 1973 Dolphin-Steeler Monday Night game. Joe Gilliam was starting for the Steelers as the other QBs were hurting. Howard Cosell gave Gilliam a big buildup as the man who would...
