    Don Meredith: 1938-2010

I'm old enough to have watched Don Meredith play on TV many times. He was a legend of sorts in his playing days, even without winning a championship. Meredith had a reputation as one of the best team leaders in pro football. He would order a player off the field for a sub-par effort. Do QBs...

    2010 Week 13

The yards a back gains on a pass play have never counted toward the back's rushing total. For example, when Jim Brown and Bobby Mitchell were the Cleveland Brown RBs from 1958-61, they would catch a 2-yard pass from Milt Plum and turn it into a 60-yard TD. The yardage went in their receiving totals.

    2010 Week 13

It is better that the Browns won than it would have been if Hillis had gained 95 yards in a loss. He'll go over a thousand next week and hopefully the Browns will have a respectable won-lost record at year's end.

    White RBs and 100-yard games

Until the Oilers came to Nashville and became the Titans, I didn't live close to a pro team, and I haven't seen the Titans in person either. I have seen a white RB gain over 100 yards in person on the college level. Curt Watson ran for over 100 yards for Tennessee against Vanderbilt in 1969...

    RIP Ron Santo

Santo became the Cub third baseman when I was 10 years old and was still there when I was 23. I recall reading a Sport magazine story on him sometime in the early 60s. The theme of the story was that Santo "fought himself" and this was his biggest weakness. Despite everything, including the...

    White RBs and 100-yard games

Ken Willard was a fairly big name from 1965-73 (the 49ers drafted him ahead of Gale Sayers), and appeared in 4 pro bowls. I just checked pro football reference and found that he had 3 100-yard games in the 70s and 6 in the 60s. A funny thing, when Floyd Little was elected to the HOF this...

    2010 Week 13

Were the defenders told to let Danny Woodhead run 36 yards for a TD? Are Peyton Hillis' numbers not legitimate? Countless white QBs throw for huge yardage. Are they faked as well? Speaking of Ben Roethlisberger, was it scripted so that Ben would look better than the black QBs who played the...

    White RBs and 100-yard games

I remember Larry Schreiber. He was briefly something of a fan favorite in San Francisco. Fred Willis is white, also. It was not unusual for white RBs to have 100 yard rushing games in the 1970s. Edited by: sport historian

    2010 Week 13

It's not that ridiculous. It has happened before, a QB not playing for a few years and performing well when playing again. George Blanda hadn't played regularly at QB since 1954 and was out of football in 1960 when he signed with Houston of the newly-formed AFL. Blanda then played better...

    White RBs and 100-yard games

With pro football reference you get the game logs back to 1960. This is necessary for the older players.

    Peyton Hillis

Yes, Hillis' life will be very different if he becomes a big star with a huge contract. He will have to avoid the pitfalls this can bring.

    White RBs and 100-yard games

I just did a quick search relating to my post above. During the 1960s, there were 8 thousand yard seasons by white RBs in pro football, 6 in the NFL, 2 in the AFL. Five of the 8 were by Jim Taylor, five years in succession 1960-64. The other 3 were John David Crow (1960), Charley Tolar...

    White RBs and 100-yard games

There will be a lot of them in the 1970s compared to the 80s. I have a hunch there may have been more 100 yard games in the 70s by white players than in the 60s. This would be because the run was more prevelant in that decade.Edited by: sport historian

    Peyton Hillis

I wish Peyton wouldn't hurdle over tacklers. This is a good way to get a knee injury.

    Danny Woodhead

Back in the 1960's, teams looked for the "Big Back." It was thought that the smaller back would disappear. This turned out not to be the case.

    Mike Alstott officially retires

When Alstott was a senior in college, I was browsing through the late Joel Buschbaum's Draft Preview and describing Alstott, wrote something like: "Mike Alstott will bring back the days of Larry Csonka and John Riggins." I've posted this before, but it is relevant this year.

I remember seeing him as Francis Marion in "The Swamp Fox," mentioned above. I loved that show.

    Caste Matchups for Week 11

Tennessee beat Kentucky 24-14 to make a bowl, probably the Music City Bowl in Nashville. QB Tyler Bray looked good for the fourth week in a row. He sends the ball downfield, not many short ones. Unfortunately, Bray has an all-sumo line and gets hit a lot while releasing the pass. TE Luke...

    2010 Week 12

This was another complaint by sportswriters from the 1960's on. The fact that most offensive linemen were white was purported to be another example of "NFL Racism," along with the lack of black quarterbacks and linebackers. "The NFL won't let blacks play thinking positions like quarterback...
