    2012 Outdoor Track Season

Lost in the shuffle... They put the young Frenchman, Pierre-Ambroise Bosse, who just last year won the World Juniors (see previous threads), in the "B" section of the 800 at Doha, and the youngster beat a field consisting entirely of east Africans, including Alfred Yego, winning in 1:45.69--a...

    Mary Cain

Mary Cain dropped down to the 800 and ran a 2:03.34, again insane for her age. In retrospect, though, I wish I'd combined this thread to include Jessica Judd from Britain, and possibly Georgia Peel (also British). It's so easy to forget these two, as we don't hear as much from over there, but...

    Steroids and Black Athletes

This week it became public that they are likely to retest the samples from the 2004 Olympics before they throw them out. They keep them for eight years, so this is the last chance. Apparently, some of the tests have gotten better in the last eight years, so I'd love to see them do it.

    Jeremy Wariner

You forgot to add the phrase "convicted drug cheat" in front of LaShawn Merrit... Santos is incredibly impressive, whatever his background is. That's two sub 45's in a row for Rooney, a great start to the season after I thought he was fading. Turns out that last year (when he was terrible)...

Christophe Lemaitre "White Lightning" 9.92 and 19.80!

We all want Christophe to win. Always. Meanwhile, an article on Danny Talbot. Note what Talbot says: I looked up to him and Michael Johnson and more lately Christophe Lemaitre (France’s world 200m bronze medallist). “Just watching a white European athlete challenging the guys from...

    2012 Outdoor Track Season

Chris Giesting continued his breakout freshman year by becoming Big East conference champion in both the 200 and 400 this weekend. Times were 21.15 and 46.03. He had to run rounds of prelims for both events on Saturday and finals on Sunday--not an easy double, to say the least. Patrick Feeney...

Christophe Lemaitre "White Lightning" 9.92 and 19.80!

Frankly, the scary thing about that video is the complete loss of speed endurance. That used to be his natural strength. Watch the video, though. Not only does he have no momentum to keep galloping, but he collapses with his hands on his knees--and stays there a long time. All of the other...

Christophe Lemaitre "White Lightning" 9.92 and 19.80!

I haven't found a full video, but this partial one pretty much says it all. In the past, when Christophe finished a race, he would "gallop out," like a race horse, quite a ways, able to carry his speed a long way. Here, Christophe strains hard then practically stops right on the finish line...

    Mary Cain

Meanwhile, Mary Cain's incredible season continues. Every time she steps foot on a track she runs one of the ten fastest hs times ever. It's starting to look like this tenth grader will actually make it to the Olympic trials: article.

    2012 Outdoor Track Season

Well, all the news isn't bad (i.e,. Christophe's regression). On the same day, Christophe was dawdling along to a 20.48 200m, Jonathan Borlee, who's strictly a 400m specialist and who hadn't raced all year, won the 200 at Texas Tech in 20.31. That may not be world class for 200m, but it's...

Christophe Lemaitre "White Lightning" 9.92 and 19.80!

There can be no denying the regression now. Race after race, indoors and out, he has performed well below a year ago. 20.48 with virtually no wind. Ouch. It's getting painful to read his results. I don't know how anyone could possibly have lost so much speed at such a young age, but this...

    Jeremy Wariner

I feel like Wariner's endurance is coming around--based on his sub-45 a week ago--but his speed just doesn't seem to be there. He was in action again tonight, running in Arkansas at a low key meet. He ran the 200, finishing fourth in 20.76, despite a 1.3 wind. Close behind him, incidentally...

    2012 Outdoor Track Season

Well, Christophe may have had a bad day (let's pray he rebounds), but some of my old fave were really putting on a show yesterday: To start her day, Laura Roesler almost singlehandedly won the 4 by 800 relay for Oregon at the Penn Relays (huge event, gazillions of teams). Only one runner ran a...

Christophe Lemaitre "White Lightning" 9.92 and 19.80!

What a nightmare. The wind is negligible. He should be able to run that kind of time into a hurricane. With hail the size of canned hams. Running backwards. While injured. That times not even enough good to win a national high school meet in the US. Or a junior high meet in Jamaica...

    Mary Cain

I usually don't start threads for individual athletes, especially young ones, but Mary Cain looks like she'll be dominating track and field for a long, long time. For the past couple of years, she's been breaking age-group records and running eye-popping times, but now she's taking it to a new...

    2012 Outdoor Track Season

Finally, some stirrings of life from Europe (which starts the season much later): The British Miler Club hosted a mile run (not a full meet) in Trafford. Some impressive youngsters showed up to use it as a rust-buster. Both Charlie Brice and Niall Brooks have been written about before--they...

    2012 Outdoor Track Season

Cutting and pasting some news from the high school meets this weekend: Drew Magaha (Upper Moreland) rocketed his way around the track and wound up with a US#1 and PA Record of 1:48.82 in the 800m run! (Note: that is an unreal time for a high schooler. What is it with our 800 runners the past...

And Kilty went 10.15 although with a 2.5 wind. He's edging closer.

    2012 Outdoor Track Season

Meanwhile, in the 800, unheralded Ryan Martin (the mountain man) once again beat hyped-to-the-moon Charles Jock (Sudanian-American). Martin has repeatedly beat Jock, yet Jock draws all the oohs and ahhs in the press and from commentators. In this case, neither finished first, however. The pro...

    2012 Outdoor Track Season

Just sat down and looked up some results. Martyn Rooney and J. Wariner both under 45 in the 400!!! That's splendid for April--especially for Rooney. It also dispels some doubts about Wariner. I'm very excited about these times and look forward to the race being posted on flotrack later...

    2012 Outdoor Track Season

A lot of runners have dropped out of their scheduled races (and there's plenty coming up today), but here are some of the best results from Thursday and Friday: 1) Cam Levins!! In an epic display of ballsiness pushed the pace late against the "unbeatable" Lawi Lalang (Kenyan who trains with...

    Sam McGuffie

Sam has been moved to WR. That's why he got so few carries in the spring. http://www.chron.com/sports/rice/article/Sam-McGuffie-shifts-to-new-role-for-Owls-3446043.php

    Bradley Shields

In the meanwhile, Dallas Burroughs, who ran some insane times in high school, seems to have dropped track entirely for football. I'm crossing my fingers that he'll run track before graduation. Incidentally, your nametag reminds me, on a non-track related note, that Cam McDaniels, who had one...

    2012 Outdoor Track Season

Another interesting meet (also available online for anyone with the time) is the Oregon Relays this weekend. Once again, an idiosyncratic list of stories to watch: women's 200--fascinating. First, Hannah Cunliffe, a hs sophomore, will be running against the college girls. Second, supergirl...

    2012 Outdoor Track Season

The track season has started slowly this year, with a lot of runners skipping events or running odd distances. However, the first chance for serious athletes to start proving themselves comes up this weekend at the Mt. SAC relays, which I believe will be webcast for anyone who has the time...
