    Bradley Shields

Sounds promising, but so far he's running 10.6s. I don't know what happens to some of these guys who can't repeat their high school performances. Joe Fisher (Auburn) has been a bust so far, too.

    season starts down under

Solomon is running spectacular times for his age--as he was last year. And I believe this last time was his third round of running at the meet. As much as I love our collegiate runners--Gehret, Braddy, and so forth--Solomon is well ahead of them and fast-becoming the best medal hope, despite...

    Jeremy Wariner

The buzz on the race is that the winds were swirling around 25 mph in Texas, so we can hope that was the cause of the bad time. I'd certainly like to see him uncork a fast one soon, though. The race is on the first page of Flotrack, for anyone interested.

    High School track meets

Well, I'm sure the football fans will be pleased but I was disappointed to look up Devon and discover that he's got offers to play football from pretty much everyone. I wish he would stick with track, but he'll probably go for football.

    800 meters

Early season 800 news: Curtis Beach--he's a decathlete, and a really good one, could well make the Olympic team. But everyone knows he'd be better at mid distance. So the Duke undergrad, who reputedly runs almost no mileage in practice, raced the 800 this week and annihilated the competition...

    2012 Outdoor Track Season

Wariner won his first 400 of the year yesterday but wasn't satisfied with his time. Here's an article.

    High School track meets

Wow--fantastic. When I saw the name Devon Allen, I didn't even bother to look him up. Given that he's only a junior, we really need to remember his name. He won an extraordinary five gold medals (what makes it even more extraordinary is the fact that, legally, he was only allowed to enter...

    2012 Outdoor Track Season

Very exciting result by Giesting. And Patrick Feeney finished second, for a solid 1-2 punch. Another fast freshman, Sean Delfani, finished fourth (on time--he was in another heat). Here's the Giesting video. He makes the other runners look like high school kids. We haven't said much about...

    800 meters

It's getting so that I can't keep track of all the great young 800 runners. This year, even more are popping up in the high school ranks. Tyler Smith, the undertrained Canadian, who has been so good indoors this year, would seem to be the class, but now Californian Nick Hartle is said to be...

    2012 Outdoor Track Season

She reminds me so much of LeMaitre. So it's agreed. Let it be resolved that Dafne Schippers should drop the heptathlon and concentrate on the sprints.

    2012 Outdoor Track Season

Some familiar names at the upcoming Arcadia Invitational for high schoolers. Hannah Cunliffe (but not Marybeth Sant) in the 100 and 200. Cammie Chapus, Maddie Meyers, and Amy Eloise-Neal in the mile. Amy Weissenbach in the 800. In general, the mid-distances are pretty much all white, the...

    2012 Outdoor Track Season

Jimmy, I followed up on Sitek, and it looks like he was primarily a cross-country and 400m man in high school, and only ran a few short sprints his senior year. That may be why he is making rapid progress now. Earlier, he was in the wrong events (his cross country times were weak, but his 400s...

    2012 Outdoor Track Season

And in this video Jeremy W runs the anchor of the 4 by 4 at the Texas Relays. Notice how easily he spanks the runners trying to catch him and puts them to bed. Keep your fingers crossed. It's early in the season. By the way, someone should mention regarding Niit that he is the former World...

    2012 Outdoor Track Season

Speaking of great openers, Cayla Hatton, a 17 yr old HS senior, just blistered a 10k in cold wintry weather in 33 minutes, beating second place by 7 minutes. That's the second best US time ever. The distance/mid-distance renaissance continues in the US, with the girls joining in now too.

    2012 Outdoor Track Season

Actually, I don't think we disagree on Niit's potential. We're just looking at it from different perspectives. You'd prefer to see Niit stay in the 100 and break 10 even if it means he's never close to the best in the world (I think he has sub-10 potential, but just barely and nowhere near sub...

    2012 Outdoor Track Season

Jay Conn ran for Canada in the 4 by 1 which finished second, and he ran a pretty good time in the 100, though the wind was over the limit. Niit's performance was more impressive. He has shown more raw sprint speed than Jeremy Wariner at Wariner's peak. If he would just train with Clyde Hart...

    2012 Outdoor Track Season

We probably haven't talked enough about the high school phenoms (and teammates!) Amy Weissenbach and Ami Chapus, now considered the greatest 1-2 punch in h.s. history. Weissenbach holds the h.s. record in the 800 and Chapus is bearing down on the record in the 1600 (though how much longer can...

    2012 Outdoor Track Season

By the way, don't look now but Jonathan Cabral, last year's phenomenal high school hurdler, has just run his first races for Oregon (he sat out the indoor season) and is already pretty much the best hurdler in the history of the school. Last week, he was Oregon's athlete of the week. He's a...

    german sprinters

Now let's get a look at the kid. First a video from last summer, when, shortly after turning 15, he won a 100m in 11.09. Looks like a beanpole. Second, a video from this February. Now 15 1/2, he wins an indoor 200 in 21.66. I'm not sure how old his opponents were. Needless to say, a gawky...

    german sprinters

Holy cow. Is this the German LeMaitre? I read the article--the kid's not turning 16 until May, they just turned him from a bruised-shins soccer player to a sprinter--and all of his times have been blazing fast for his age. The 21.64 is no fluke. How good is he? LeMaitre was only...

    Jeremy Wariner

quote from an article: Wariner was supposed to run the 4x400, but like last week at TCU, one of his relay teammates was injured. He will run the 4x400 next week at the Texas Relays, and possibly the 4x100, before running his first open 400 of the season at Texas State on April 7. "Coach...

    Jeremy Wariner

It's a decent time, but I'm not sure what to make of times in these early, trivial meets. Frankly, I'd rather see Wariner running longer distances in March.

    2012 Indoor Track Season

The indoor worlds were pretty meaningless. No one of note was there in most events, as so many athletes are waiting for the Olympics. In the meanwhile, there were tons of exciting races at the NCAA's, especially in the distance events, where it is becoming more and more clear that US runners...
