They probably had these stories written before the OTAs even started.
We know Kiko Alonso and Connor Barwin will give opposing offenses nightmares in 2015. But what about some of the other guys on this defense?
Is Bennie Logan really starting caliber? 0 sacks last season. Why not try Beau Allen at DT? I think Allen has a very good shot at taking the starting job away from Logan.
I would say that DE is set with Fletcher Cox and Vinny Curry. Which is unfortunate because I think both Taylor Hart and Brandon Bair could start in this league.
DeMeco Ryans and Mychal Kendricks will battle or the ILB spot next to Alonso.
Will Bryan Braman finally get a chance to compete for a starting job? Chances are slim at this point, what with Brandon Graham apparently having some renaissance season last year (5.5 sacks :icon_rolleyes: ), which was good enough for a contract extension. I've said it many times, if they get Braman on the field, he'll be a beast!! Meanwhile, Graham, a former 1st round pick (bust), whose been a bum for years, never gets criticized by fans or media, then you have guys like AJ Hawk, who has been one of the most productive LBs of the past decade labeled a bust. I just don't get it. Hopefully, Braman can take it away, but it's likely Graham's spot to lose.
Malcolm Jenkins will take the FS spot, but would it be too farfetched to see Chris Maragos or Chris Prosinski at SS? What the hell has Earl Wolff done to be anointed starter?
How nice would it be to see this starting lineup?
Or am I dreaming?
Heh, never mind, apparently the Eagles have moved longtime cornerback Walter Thurmond to safety to compete with Earl Wolff. This will likely ensure neither Maragos nor Prosinski get a real chance to take the SS spot. Who knows though, maybe one of them will shine in camp, and come out on top.
Hell, this move tells me they clearly don't trust Wolff back there. And Thurmond is yet to complete a full season without getting hurt, and at 5'11, 190, a move to safety probably isn't the best way to keep healthy.
Chip Kelly appears to give white players more of a chance than some coaches.
Chris Prosinski is a very athletic player that needs a chance to develop by playing. Hopefully he'll get that chance under Kelly.
Agreed we were very high on this guy coming out of the draft few years ago. It's hard for white players to develop especially since a lot of times they are buried on the bench!!
The Eagles mostly went with five Whites on defense in the second quarter against the Colts (their second stringers), including an all-White d-line at times. And it was all Whites on the o-line, along with Cooper, Maehl and a couple of White tight ends seeing the field as well.
The Eagles are slotted to have 10 white starters and a league-high 25 whites on the 53-man roster. Here is the breakdown...
OFFENSE (7/8 White Players):
QB – Bradford
WR – Cooper
OL - Barbre, Kelce, Gardner, Johnson
Their offensive reserves will likely consist of Barkley/Tebow, Maehl, and an all -white OL (Tobin, Molk, Moffitt, and Kelly).
CAPTION: Budding Superstar TE, Zach Ertz
DEFESNE (2 White Players):
OLB – Barwin
MLB - Alonso
As Don alluded to, their future on defense is surely brighter than any other NFL squad. Their reserve defense contains 6 white players (Hart, Bair, Allen, Braman, Maragos, and Prosinksi), all of whom are likely to make the team this year. It would’ve been 7, had Travis Long not landed on IR.
CAPTION: Connor Barwin Poised for Big Season
SPECIAL TEAMS (3 White Players):
P – Jones
PK – Parkey
LS – Dorenbos
The white Eagles players that are in danger of missing the 53-man roster are: QB’s Tebow and Barkley, WR’s Maehl and Kinne, TE’s Gleichert and Tukes, and several OL (Vandervelde, Andrews, and Graf).
Needless to say, we should all be rooting for this squad to go deep into the playoffs in 2015-2016.
I wanted to bump this excellent post by Awake in America.
I've always been a big Matt Barkley fan. He's been as screwed over thus far as much as any White QB in recent years, other than perhaps Tim Tebow. Watching the Eagles-Colts pre-season game the other day, Barkley was very sharp and has the brains and talent to implement Chip Kelly's offense. By contrast, Mark Sanchez was inaccurate and slower to make decisions than Barkley. Everyone assumes Sanchez is locked in as the number two quarterback behind Sam Bradford, but I'm hoping Sanchez is released or traded and the regular season depth chart ends up being Bradford, Barkley, Tebow.
Here's a typical blurb from Weenieworld:
Philly Mag: Birds 24/7 predicts Tim Tebow will not make the Eagles' final roster. Tim McManus hedged somewhat on the prediction by admitting there is still a chance Matt Barkley could be traded prior to the season, but following an impressive showing by Barkley in the preseason opener, it is clear Tebow is behind the eight ball to make the final roster. Unless coach Chip Kelly sees Tebow as a gadget player he can utilize on game days, his roster spot is in serious jeopardy.
It seems as if Chip is talking up Tebow's accuracy improving since joining the Eagles. This might lead to a Barkley trade or release. It's a shame that Tebow's success comes at the expense of Barkley. Hopefully Barkley can land on his feet in an ideal situation.
Chip Kelly is toast in Philadelphia. The team has fallen apart and quit on him.
His biggest blunder was at quarterback. He should have developed Matt Barkley, who is ideal for his offense, and kept Foles and Tebow as backups. His offense doesn't work well without the right quarterback.
I don't feel too bad about it either, because he didn't have the courage of his convictions. He capitulated to his critics, especially those calling him "racist," by keeping Sanchez over Barkley and Tebow, and greatly diminishing Cooper's role and continuing to stunt Zach Ertz's development. He went half-assed and it's come back to bite his entire ass in return.
this is exactly right. And we all saw it coming after Stephen A Smiff went on his tirade almost one year ago. Chip should have doubled down on his "racism" but instead he showed weakness and got his head bitten off
Totally agree Don. Kelly's underestimation of the QB position has come back to really bite him. The two outcomes in Philly are that he is fired or that he will bring in the "type" of QB that needs to run his offense. Their will be cries for the toucan or gremlin to go to philly in the offseason if Kelly sticks around. I think he may end up taking one of the high profile college jobs though.
This may be an ominous sign that Kelly has found his next starting QB:
Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly watched the game from the Navy sideline...
Of course, Keenan Reynolds, the Senior QB of Navy, took 5th place in Heisman voting.
Reynolds is an option QB and has a 5 year commitment to the Navy. He in no way, shape or form is a viable QB in the NFL.
