Pure disappointment from the Pre last night. First Galen Rupp didn't run. He has asthma, and the pollen count was dangerous. Second, Solinsky tried to run with a nagging hamstring problem and had to drop out mid-race. He was seriously upset. In the post race interview, he said he would regret it for the rest of his life (losing the opportunity to run against such a spectacular field) and said he felt like "the biggest pussy in the world." I've known a few hammy pulls in my day, though, and there's nothing you can do about it. As for Rupp, though, take your allergy shots and get in there!

Yeah it's been dissapointing. Even Sebastian Ernst only ran a 20.91 in the 200 meters. This is from the German Indoor Record Holder over the same distance. I want to know what happened to Robert Herring too. He has went from a 20.40's guy to running in the 21 second range. He is still only around 21 years of age. Still a few events left. Maybe we will see some better times in the 100.

Wariner came in 2nd at the Prefontaine meet in a good, but ordinary time for him (mid 45s).
Obviously the injury he suffered in his last race has had some affect on him, because he had already run sub-45 earlier this year.
That sucks! I hope he can recover soon and get back to form. He was starting to look like the invincible Wariner of old until this injury.
Meanwhile and unfortunately, David Oliver beat Xiang Liu - both very good times.

The entire Prefontaine was one massive suckfest. Wheating and Symmonds ran like high schoolers. Rupp and Solinsky didn't run at all. Wariner looked totally mediocre.

The only bright spot was Lukas Verzbicas annihilating the h.s. record for the two-mile. Unlike his elders, there's no quit in this boy. He's a gamer.

Also, in California, Jantzen Oshier (I may have misspelled his name but didn't want to look it up again) ran a 4:00 mile. It's incredible the way our young milers are coming around. With Verzbicas, Oshier, and Austin Mudd we may finally see a sub-4 again this year, and the future looks very bright.

The great Roger Banister would be proud. The youth movement in the distances is on fire. Now let's get some white more Hannah Cunliffes as well. The biggest problem is that so many of our good potential sprinters go into other sports. We need to keep them interested in athletics.

To White Lightning and all other posters. These early sub 10 times by 4 or 5 of the Jamaicans and 4 Americans has me worried. Some of them have to be cheating. If Justin Gatlin can run a 9.97 after a two year suspension for being a drug cheat there is something going on here.
Look at Ben Johnson in 1988. The guy ran a 9.79 while juiced and when he came back he never got close to 10.3. Do you know of any sprinters other than Dwain Chambers and Gatlin who have come back from drug suspensions to run as fast as they did when they were juicing?
i also wanted to know since we have had literally hundreds of white/asian sprinters get to 10.1 and they never get beyond that. Is it me or do they just give up psychologically because they assume they cant run a 9.8 like some of these guys. My best guess is most of our sprinters are psyched out and are not full time athletes meaning they actually have full time jobs and dont train as hard therefore not improving.
Maybe Jamstar could fill us in if these Jamaican sprinters actually work or spend their time training all week. I know for a fact that Tyson Gay, Mike Rodgers, and Gatlin do not have 9-5 jobs.

20.42 for Jonathan Borlee in Morocco.
Jordan Boase following in 20.52 and Paul Hession 20.87

Nice times indeed. Borlee could probably do some more damage in the deuce if he ran the event more. He focuses primarily on the 400 as you guys know. Jordan Boase was running even faster than this in college so that time doesn't suprise me. My question in my mind is if Jordan can get back the times he was running at Washington and even faster? I'm hoping that he can. This race should give him alot of confidence! Good to see Hession get under 21 seconds after his very average showing last time out. Paul Hession is still far from being in good racing shape at the moment in my opinion but he will get there.

When Ben Johnson came back he tried to run clean and never got better than about 10.3X. His body was also noticeably fatter. After a season of this mediocre form he took steroids and got noticeably fitter and he started shaving his times down to 10.1X and then he was caught again. With Chambers I have noticed he has gotten bigger since he has launched his comeback, but his times have seemed to flatten out at around 10 flat to a high 9.9X. I will have to reserve judgement on Gatlin until I see what he looks like.

Let's give thefemale sprinters some publicity to. Ivet Lalova is runing in Olso on Thursday. We will also have Verena Sailer, Povh and Ryemyen in the same race. Hoping for a time near 11 seconds flat if the weather is right. The two Ukrainian Sprinters are due to blow away their personal bests after having a incredible indoor season. Good luck to all three of these ladies. Edited by: white lightning

I don't know about all the smaller meets--perhaps Guliyev and others are running somewhere this weekend--but there are three major meets coming up in the next few days:

1) Oslo--tis true, all eyes will be on the perfect face and flawless figure of Ivet Lalova. As for the races, Ernst will never have a better opportunity to go sub-20, as he'll have Bolt as a pacer. The mile will show whether Riseley's breakout season is for real.
2) the NCAA finals--the marquis races, frankly, are the men's and women's 800. We've never had such a deep promising field of 800 runners (on the men's side alone--Primm, Martin, Andrews, Grew, Loxsom, and so forth--just incredible).
3) NY Diamond League--believe it or not, the HIGH SCHOOL events are the most interesting. Burroughs will be interesting in the 100, but all eyes will actually be on the high school mile, which will far more interesting than the professional races. The start list includes National 2-mile record holder, Lukas Verzbicas, undefeated California champ and holder of the year's best time, Jantzen Oshier, and last weekend's miracle man, Austin Mudd, who ran the most incredible mile/800/400 imaginable, all in an hour. Also, the Rosa twins. The smart money is...not betting on this one. Who could possibly call the winner. The real question is whether one of our young studs will go sub-4. In the 400, Wariner and Borlee are competing.

You know I agree with you on Ivel Lalova but Verena Sailer is right there with her!

I think Riseley is ready for the big time. He may not win on Thursday but a top 3 finish would be another step in the right direction.

As far as the 800 meters NCAA finals, I will take a stab at it and go with Loxsom. Just a hunch although all of them are studs and equally capable of winning.

As far as NY, I just can't see Lukas Verzbicas losing. This guy runs the best when it counts the most. Similar to Lemaitre, he will rise to the occasion. He is becoming a superstar and he is barely graduating high school. Lukas is going to make alot of money running as long as his hunger to train and race remain at the current level. The guy is just incredible.

I'm also hoping for a new p.b. from Jason Smyth in the 100. He is one of the stories of the year!

What happened to Shane Crawford? He didn't toe it up for 100 meters at the NCAA championships. Is he injured or did he withdraw to concentrate on the US championships?

He actually underperformed. I think he ran in the high 10.30's to low 10.40's range. He made if out of the first round by ran too slow in the semil finals. He missed out on a spot in the final by a few hundreths of a second if I remember right. Hard to believe. I was bummed. Hoping he doesn't hang up the spikes now that he has graduated from Purdue.

Ivet Lalova does it again. She is having a great season. Too bad the wind was barely over the legal amount or we would have seen some new personal bests from the Ukrainian Sprinters.

Byram and Niit through to the finals in the 200. Niit looked great, coasting at the end. Byram had to work quite a bit harder, as he was last out of the turn, but passed six runners to finish second.

2 white guys in the NCAA 200m final. That's pretty damn good. I bet it's been a while since that happened. But glad it's happening now.
Meanwhile Barrett Nugent made it into the 110m Hurdles final.
It seems he's not quite as sharp as he was earlier in the season. But he may be able to pull off a medal.
Let's hope so.

I am pumped. Way to go Brandon, Marek and Barrett. All of these guys make us proud. I think Marek is going to p.b. tommorow. Hopefully Brandon Byram will as well.

Wow is she stunning. What a beautiful lady and man can she run. I would love to go to the track and run with her. If she wouldn't have broken her leg around 4 years ago, who knows how much better she might have been. It appears like she has finally just about fully recovered. She should go into modeling or movies when her career is over. I really would love to see her get on the medal stand before it's all said and done.

Wow. She was totally left in the blocks (reaction time anyone?) but ran them down easily. But, of course, the highlight of the video is when the camera gets closer while she celebrates. Sigh...WL, can't you come up with a nickname for her, like "Lovelyova" or something?

Fearless forecasts for the weekend:

1) I'm feeling optimistic. I think Lukas Verzbicas will go sub-4 and win the most exciting h.s. mile ever contested. Jantzen Oshier will be right there with him. My gut tells me that Austin Mudd won't be able to hang with them, as I think he will end up being more of an 800 runner. The Rosas have been quiet this spring, so I don't expect one of them to win. There are other great runners, but I'm going with Lukas.

2) Wariner gets his groove back and wins the 400.

3) And my really shocking prediction. I think Jared Connaughton finally puts it all together this weekend at Clermont, Florida, and goes sub-10. This is apparently a very fast track, and Christophe needs company.
