Matthew Boling 9.98, 19.92, 44.84 and 8.25 LJ

Puripol Boonson has not done anything that great this year. It seems like a lot of these wonderkids kind of fade quickly. Remember that kid from Denmark? Kris Hari I think. He ran freaky times when he was 14 and 15. He improved, but not to the degree we thought he would.

Many have gotten decent to world level coaching earlier than the typical track prospect, also many physically mature earlier than other prospects. Also as we saw with the male junior 100m record holder the high school level of sprinting has abysmal PED testing so taking gear to get sponsorship or a scholarship is fairly easy to do and get away with it if the prospect avoids national and world level meets for juniors.

I can't say if the bust rate is higher with track prospects versus the big 4 leagues but it seems pretty high among wunderkind type prospects.

Despite Boling running another p.b. of 44.84 a few days ago he is so far from any chance of a medal in an Olympics or World Championships. His body type is made for the short sprints. Do you really see him doing what a guy like Dobson does or others? No he will probably peak
out at about 44.50 approx unless he finds a new body type and a much greater set of lungs. So many of these guys make it look effortless even though the 400 is one of the toughest events in track. I'm glad he has 3 or 4 sub 45's but it still does nothing to excite the majority of
track fans. Boling would have only finished 6th in the 400 meters at the London Diamond League last weekend. He isn't good enough and never will be over that distance. His talent lies in the short sprints!

My point has always been that with the right coaching he can run in the 9.70's to 9.80's and 19.70's approx over 200 meters. He would have
the best chance of becoming a household name there. A true superstar even if he didn't medal. No one cares about him running the 400. I agree with jacknyc that he could be an incredible long jumper but at this point why bother? Go back to the 100 & 200 before it's too late! If the kid wants fame & the spotlight then he must return as a pure sprinter which his body is built for!

I suspect foul play, in terms of his coaches and I bet the "ESTABLISHMENT" wants out of him and where they need him to be

and unfortunately, this is what happens to whites who can break the stereotypes, like Mac Mcclung

Looks like he wants to keep trying with the 400

Often our guys are their own worst enemies. He should simply demand to be a 100/200 guy and that’s it. Period.

Or go back to long jump because he was better there than he will ever be at the 400.

Just watched the European Track Video of Boling racing for the first time overseas. At one point he said he could get used to running in Europe. Would love to see him move over there and go back to the 100 and 200 meters. If not I hope he wakes up and gives up the 400.
Boling just is built for the short sprints and that will never change. He will never run 44 seconds flat or in the high 43's! Why can't the
people around him give him better advice. Go back to running 60's, 100's and 200's. That's it!

BOLING IS NOT A TRUE 400 METERS SPRINTER and NEVER WILL BE!

Matthew Boling needs to run the 100 and 200 meters! REPEAT THIS LIKE A BROKEN RECORD. What a waste of elite talent on the wrong distance!

Matt Boling is on the 4 x100 and 4 x400 relay Olympic Development teams. His 4 x 100 team finished 4th, but better luck on the 400 relays.

The U.S. men did respond back with a win in the men's 4x400 Olympic development section thanks to Elijah Godwin, Matt Boling, Marcellus Moore and Jevon O'Bryant running 3:03.55 to beat Canada by half-a-second.

Unfortunately, Boling's split on the 4x400m relay was a very poor 47.36.
His regression is depressing.

We've seen a lot of sprinters peak at a young age and seem to get stuck, but I'm not sure I've seen someone regress quite like Boling. He seems to be getting noticeably slower year by year. Not sure what the best move for him would be at this point, maybe go back to his high school coach LOL.

This may sound bad but he has had two black coach's in a row. Maybe go back to a white coach that has a specialty in training sprinters!

I won't hold my breath though. As intelligent as Boling is book wise, his street smarts & common sense are lacking. You don't run a wind legal sub 10 and sub 20 only to switch events and never look back. It's as stupid a decision I've seen in a very long time athletically.

He also got 4th in the 100m (10.40, 1.4w) at the Gamecock Invitational. Really, pretty bad.

If Boling was to get back to training for these events his time would drop dramatically. He has focused on endurance which is necessary for
the 400 meters. We need him to get back to training for the short sprints. Would love to see him try to get back to his high school and early college years form.

He definitely should be focused on the short sprints - I agree. But that's likely not to happen this year.

I figure this:
Despite the lack of progress, so far every year since high school he has improved in at least one event and set a PR. He's also has only been running as a 400m runner for one year. For real success, you have to give it at least two years. The first year you're learning. Its the second year that you can improve from your mistakes as you've gone through the process already. So we are in the second year of the experiment. They're not going to back out now. This year he will be a 400m runner - guaranteed. Whether he sticks with the 400m is something they will evaluate at the end of this season.

Hopefully, he continues his string of consecutive years with a PR, and improves upon his 400m time, and makes the world team at least in the relays. He turns 25 in two months. Next year it would be great to see him then step back down to the 200 and 100. Its an off year so a good time to readjust before three straight years of world championships and olympics for which he will be turning 27, 28 and 29. Kind of an ideal time for him to peak for his career.

His career is not going the way anybody would want, but it can still be turned around and so far he has yet to not make an improvement every single year in at least one event he was focused on. That has to be recognized.

I’ve learned that sprinters are just a shot in the dark. They can peak, regress, stall out or just plain quit and walk away from track at any time. We have no clue what’s going on with them in their personal lives. With that said, I don’t expect anything from a guy like Boling. If he runs fast 100’s again, great. But if not, we celebrate the great things he did and move on. I personally don’t see him ever representing the US in the 400 as I just don’t think he has it in that event, but hopefully I’m wrong. Only time will tell.
