World Number 1!

I love the game of golf and everything it represents and play it as often as I can when I'm not spending time with my wife and children, however, the thing that irks me about the modern professional player is the lack of killer instinct, toughness, something, etc., whatever it is!

Here, we have the number 1 player in the world Tiger Woods, on the shelf with an injury and you'd think someone would want to take over as the best player in the world!

The top 4 in world rankings after the Masters are as follows:

1. Tiger Woods 8.87
2. Adam Scott 8.28
3. Henrik Stenson 8.12
4. Bubba Watson 7.30

Woods dropped from I believe 9.12 average points to currently 8.87 after the Masters.

None of the 2-4, as far as I know, are in the field this week at the RBC in Hilton Head South Carolina. I'm not sure about Watson, but Scott or Stenson would have a chance to take over as the world's number 1, if they either won or finished with a high placing. At a minimum they would get closer to Woods.

I believe Matt Kuchar, No.6, is the highest ranked player in The RBC. I hope Kuchar wins this weekend!

The highest ranked player in the world playing in this weeks Zurich Classic in New Orleans is number 11, Justin Rose.

I guess I just don't get it. The top players 2 through 5 could become the top ranked player in the world, but they just don't seem to be in a hurry to get there!

With 2 decent finishes in the next 2 tournaments following The Masters, Adam Scott could have become the best player in the world! Why is he not playing?

Henrik Stenson ranked 3rd in the world is playing The Volvo China Open and could possibly take over the number 1 spot, but I'm not sure where he has to finish. He may have to win or just finish in the top 3,4, or 5. I will try and find out.

More of the top 5 players should be trying to take advantage!

Either way, I'm looking forward to someone taking over as number 1. Maybe it's Stenson's turn. We'll see.

I agree with most of what you're saying Don in regards to most players would rather win Majors than be number, however, most players aren't winning (Majors), they might win 1 and then they're done. Exceptions being Phil, Rory, and just recently Bubba Watson and throw in Els, who'll probably never win another one.

Jordan Spieth did move up 2 spots, from 9 to 7 last week by finishing T-12 at the RBC Heritage!

I guess it's just not the same anymore with players not being as aggressive towards winning tournaments and trying to be the best they can be, what with all the prize money and sponsorships thrown their way.

Anyway, this weeks top 5 in the world....

1. Woods, 8.46, he moved down another .20 avg. points.
2. Scott, 8.18, he actually moved up .04 to move a little closer to Woods!
3. Stenson, 8.00, lost some ground by finishing T-5 at the Volvo China this week.
4. Watson, 7.35, moved +.10.
5. Kuchar, 7.14, dropped -.09. DNP this week after winning the RBC heritage last week.

I don't think there will ever be a dominant player like Nicklaus or Woods again. The depth in quality players doesn't allow for it. There are 40 or 50 guys who are a threat to win each major and there are only four majors a year. Greg Norman was ranked number one in the world for years and only won two majors, both British Opens.

That may be Tiger's true legacy -- instead of unleashing a flood of non-existent top black players as was widely predicted back in the mid-1990s, a lot of talented White kids saw how much money there is to be made on the PGA Tour thanks to the riches and acclaim received by Woods and took up golf at a young age in far larger numbers than previously.

At any rate it took Jack a quarter century to win his 18. If some phenom comes along who becomes that successful again, I'll be dead or too senile to care by the time he gets to 18. :bigsmile:

Here's the breakdown on who could become number 1 in the world golf rankings this weekend at The Players.

2. Adam Scott, finishes 16th or better becomes number 1.
3. Henrik Stenson, finishes 6th or better to become number 1.
4. Bubba Watson, if he wins The Players, will be number 1.
5. Matt Kuchar can become number 1 with a win at The Players.

None of these guys with possibly the exception being Adam Scott, is someone I think could stay at number 1 for a while, but at this point, I'll take any of these 4 to become the new number 1!

Yes, I guess that's mathematically possible.

I still can't believe someone isn't stomping the pedal to become number 1. I guess I'm just too old school. If I were anyone within the top 10 right now, I would be playing every tournament possible to capture the top position, but as Don said, today's players are more concerned about the Majors. However, if Adam Scott would have not given the British Open to Els and went on to win the Masters as he did last year, he would be number 1 now, and we wouldn't be having this discussion.

...and that's my point. No one seems to want to be known as number 1 in the world or win Majors. If you win enough Majors, you would become number 1. No one is doing either!

That's a good idea. I would like to see either the PGA played as the second Major and put in another country each year. I think to help gain interest, you would play The Masters first, then play the PGA or another tournament deemed a Major next in another country, then play The U.S. Open third, and then The British Open last.

By putting The PGA or another tournament second and in another country I think it would gain prestige and keep the PGA's momentum going.

I think alternating the 4 Majors between the U.S. and another country would keep interest up, because even though The British Open would be played last, it's The Open and will always get it's attention. Over 200,000 were on hand to see it live!
