I love the game of golf and everything it represents and play it as often as I can when I'm not spending time with my wife and children, however, the thing that irks me about the modern professional player is the lack of killer instinct, toughness, something, etc., whatever it is!

Here, we have the number 1 player in the world Tiger Woods, on the shelf with an injury and you'd think someone would want to take over as the best player in the world!

The top 4 in world rankings after the Masters are as follows:

1. Tiger Woods 8.87
2. Adam Scott 8.28
3. Henrik Stenson 8.12
4. Bubba Watson 7.30

Woods dropped from I believe 9.12 average points to currently 8.87 after the Masters.

None of the 2-4, as far as I know, are in the field this week at the RBC in Hilton Head South Carolina. I'm not sure about Watson, but Scott or Stenson would have a chance to take over as the world's number 1, if they either won or finished with a high placing. At a minimum they would get closer to Woods.

I believe Matt Kuchar, No.6, is the highest ranked player in The RBC. I hope Kuchar wins this weekend!

It just doesn't seem that today's professional golfer has the drive, ambition or toughness to want to be the best in the world!

Congratulations Matt Kuchar on winning the RBC Heritage in Hilton Head, S.C.! The highest ranked player to enter the tournament, No.6 in the world. It will be interesting to see where Kuchar is in the world rankings and how far he's willing to go to become the number 1 player.

Kuchar climbed to number 5 in the world golf rankings with 7.23 average pts., from 6.42 the previous week.

Jordan Spieth climbed from no. 9 to no. 7 at 6.08. Would love to see this guy make it to number 1 and stay there for a long time!

Several players could move into number 1, if they'll keep playing and stay hungry as Tiger continues to drop. It's just not clear who wants it more!

Woods has dropped from 9.12 to 8.66 over the last 3 weeks.

The current top 10 in world golf rankings.....

1. Tiger Woods 8.66
2. Adam Scott 8.14
3. Henrik Stenson 8.01
4. Bubba Watson 7.25
5. Matt Kuchar 7.23
6. Jason Day 6.78
7. Jordan Spieth 6.08
8. Sergio Garcia 6.00
9. Phil Mickelson 5.96
10.Rory McILroy 5.87

The highest ranked player in the world playing in this weeks Zurich Classic in New Orleans is number 11, Justin Rose.

I guess I just don't get it. The top players 2 through 5 could become the top ranked player in the world, but they just don't seem to be in a hurry to get there!

With 2 decent finishes in the next 2 tournaments following The Masters, Adam Scott could have become the best player in the world! Why is he not playing?

Henrik Stenson ranked 3rd in the world is playing The Volvo China Open and could possibly take over the number 1 spot, but I'm not sure where he has to finish. He may have to win or just finish in the top 3,4, or 5. I will try and find out.

More of the top 5 players should be trying to take advantage!

Either way, I'm looking forward to someone taking over as number 1. Maybe it's Stenson's turn. We'll see.

The top players generally don't play as many tournaments as they used to. We're in the majors season now and they're trying to prime themselves to play well in them. The Players is also coming up in two weeks, which is often called the "fifth major."

The player rankings criteria are complicated and take several years of results into account, but winning or doing well in a major does far more to benefit a player's ranking than doing well in a tournament like the Zurich Classic, which is one of the lesser stops on the tour.

Tiger Woods likely won't be playing in any majors this year; it's just a matter of when someone else becomes number one and how long he can stay there. Woods used to have a stranglehold on the number one position but in recent years he's fallen from number one and when he's regained it he's had a much more tenuous hold on it than before. Given the unprecedented amount of talent on the tour and how much parity there is, several different players may be ranked number one for short periods, as happened in recent years with Luke Donald and Rory McIlroy. I think most players would rather win majors than be ranked number one, Luke Donald being a good example.

I agree with most of what you're saying Don in regards to most players would rather win Majors than be number, however, most players aren't winning (Majors), they might win 1 and then they're done. Exceptions being Phil, Rory, and just recently Bubba Watson and throw in Els, who'll probably never win another one.

Jordan Spieth did move up 2 spots, from 9 to 7 last week by finishing T-12 at the RBC Heritage!

I guess it's just not the same anymore with players not being as aggressive towards winning tournaments and trying to be the best they can be, what with all the prize money and sponsorships thrown their way.

Anyway, this weeks top 5 in the world....

1. Woods, 8.46, he moved down another .20 avg. points.
2. Scott, 8.18, he actually moved up .04 to move a little closer to Woods!
3. Stenson, 8.00, lost some ground by finishing T-5 at the Volvo China this week.
4. Watson, 7.35, moved +.10.
5. Kuchar, 7.14, dropped -.09. DNP this week after winning the RBC heritage last week.

I don't think there will ever be a dominant player like Nicklaus or Woods again. The depth in quality players doesn't allow for it. There are 40 or 50 guys who are a threat to win each major and there are only four majors a year. Greg Norman was ranked number one in the world for years and only won two majors, both British Opens.

That may be Tiger's true legacy -- instead of unleashing a flood of non-existent top black players as was widely predicted back in the mid-1990s, a lot of talented White kids saw how much money there is to be made on the PGA Tour thanks to the riches and acclaim received by Woods and took up golf at a young age in far larger numbers than previously.

At any rate it took Jack a quarter century to win his 18. If some phenom comes along who becomes that successful again, I'll be dead or too senile to care by the time he gets to 18.

With The Players Championship being played this week and 46 of the top 50 best golfers in the world, according to the world golf rankings, participating; including number 2 Adam Scott and number 3 Henrik Stenson, maybe this is the week one of them steps up and takes the number 1 spot away from Tiger Woods!

Here are this weeks top 11. I used 11 to show that Justin Rose took number 10 from McIlroy!

1. Tiger Woods, 8.26. Down from 8.46
2. Adam Scott, 8.04. With a good showing at the Players and Woods dropping every week, maybe he'll take the number 1 spot!

3. Henrik Stenson, 7.89. Played well in China. Maybe it's his turn.
4. Bubba Watson, 7.28. I don't see him playing well, but hopefully I'm wrong!
5. Matt Kuchar, 7.05. Not sure he has the fire it takes to be number 1!
6. Jason Day, 6.78. Still injured, I think.
7. Jordan Spieth, 5.96. Tremendous young talent. My favorite or Scott.
8. Phil Mickelson, 5.86. Moved up 1 to 8th after his showing in Charlotte/ Wells Fargo.
9. Sergio Garcia, 5.80. Just hasn't lived up to potential!
10.Justin Rose, 5.80. Moved into top 10 with his performance in Charlotte/ Wells Fargo.
11.Rory McIlroy, 5.75. Drops out of the top 10. Will he ever regain his promise?

Here's the breakdown on who could become number 1 in the world golf rankings this weekend at The Players.

2. Adam Scott, finishes 16th or better becomes number 1.
3. Henrik Stenson, finishes 6th or better to become number 1.
4. Bubba Watson, if he wins The Players, will be number 1.
5. Matt Kuchar can become number 1 with a win at The Players.

None of these guys with possibly the exception being Adam Scott, is someone I think could stay at number 1 for a while, but at this point, I'll take any of these 4 to become the new number 1!

So if Watson or Kuchar win the Players, Scott finishes in the top 16, and Stenson finishes in the top 6, that would drop Eldrick to fourth? That would be something!

Yes, I guess that's mathematically possible.

I still can't believe someone isn't stomping the pedal to become number 1. I guess I'm just too old school. If I were anyone within the top 10 right now, I would be playing every tournament possible to capture the top position, but as Don said, today's players are more concerned about the Majors. However, if Adam Scott would have not given the British Open to Els and went on to win the Masters as he did last year, he would be number 1 now, and we wouldn't be having this discussion.

...and that's my point. No one seems to want to be known as number 1 in the world or win Majors. If you win enough Majors, you would become number 1. No one is doing either!

Interestingly, Scott was a late entry for the Colonial. He entered because he became World number 1. It looks like he will take it seriously and play the necessary tournaments to keep the ranking.

No Americans in the top five, I wonder how long it's been since that's been the case, likely never.

I'm looking forward to the Ryder Cup this year, which the U.S. used to own but now Europe does.

I also wonder when the Europeans will start asking for a second major to be played outside the U.S. It isn't fair any more that three of the four are in this country. The PGA is the least prestigious major and should be demoted to just under major status ala The Players and replaced by an event in Europe or that rotates between Europe and Asia.

That's a good idea. I would like to see either the PGA played as the second Major and put in another country each year. I think to help gain interest, you would play The Masters first, then play the PGA or another tournament deemed a Major next in another country, then play The U.S. Open third, and then The British Open last.

By putting The PGA or another tournament second and in another country I think it would gain prestige and keep the PGA's momentum going.

I think alternating the 4 Majors between the U.S. and another country would keep interest up, because even though The British Open would be played last, it's The Open and will always get it's attention. Over 200,000 were on hand to see it live!

Some more changes in the top 10 after The Canadian Open, however the top 5 remain the same with no Americans! Tiger falls to 10th!

1. Adam Scott, 9.10
2. Rory McIlroy, 8.03
3. Henrik Stenson, 7.69
4. Justin Rose, 7.23
5. Sergio Garcia, 6.95
6. Matt Kuchar, 6.71. Kuchar moves past Bubba after the Canadian Open.
7. Bubba Watson, 6.70. Continuing to drop after his Masters win.
8. Jim Furyk, 6.42. Furyk at age 44 has climbed to no. 8 and over $60 million/4th on the all time money list.

9. Jason Day, 6.42
10.Tiger Woods, 6.29, and poised to drop out of the top 10 if he doesn't finish better than Spieth in his next tournament!

11. Jordan Spieth, 5.84, hoping he or McIlroy or Patrick Reed win the PGA!

Amazing Jim Furyk is number 4 on the all-time money list behind Woods 109 million, Mickelson 74 million, and Vijay Singh 68 million. Maybe Furyk can pass Singh before his career is over.
