The good sportsmanship of these two ring warriors is in contrast to the likes of Adrien Broner and David Haye.

Klitschko: "Alexander is a real fighter"

Povetkin: "Wladimir is the best boxer in the world"

Wladimir Klitschko: "It was a tough job for me. Alexander is a real fighter. I repeatedly hit him hard, but he showed great heart. I would have liked a KO, but I believe it was a deserved win. I think I can improve still."

Alexander Povetkin:
"Things didn’t quite go as well as I wanted, but I never give up. Of course, he was the better fighter. Wladimir is the best boxer in the world. It was a fair fight. I gave everything. I will try to train more."

All the anti whites like Roy Jones negros bash Vlad every chance they get. Vlad needs to get rid of his negro trainer. Vlad beat the third best fighter in the world today. To bad he had to fight fellow white brother. I can't think of any negro that can beat Povetkin. Wilder would not last 3 rounds with Povetkin.

Good post, Westside.

As much as we tried not to be, I think we were influenced by Max Kellerman's extremely negative commentary against Wladimir.

Kellerman just made another negative comment about the Povetkin-Klitschko fight during the fight that's on at this moment (Klimov-Crawford). His hatred for Wlad was very much in evidence today.

Don't listen to Kellerman. He is ashame of his white race and talks black fighters up. Yes Povetkin is white but Kellerman bashes Vlad every chance he gets since Wlad is the top white fighter.

Lewis Vs. Tua was awful! However, Vlad did win every round and got four knockdowns.............He should have gone ahead and knocked Povetkin out, but winning every round?!

HBO claims that Crawford is the best lightweight in the world, and the most exciting fighter, perhaps in boxing history! Well...............the fans were booing like Hell, so they can't complain about Vlad, he won every round and got three knockdowns. Crawford really did nothing against a fighter he was supposed to beat................

When I watched the fight again, I did not find it boring, but what frustrated me was the fact that Vlad had Povetkin out on his feet and did not bother to go ahead and knock him out!!!!!!! Steward would have raised Hell in the corner and kicked Vlad out for the knockout. Steward would do the same with Lewis. Lewis held Tua the entire fight. Mayweather holds a lot, not so much in the Alvarez fight, but in so many others. Ali used to get on my nerves when he held and laid on the ropes. Vlad still won every round, but he should have ended it.

Ali did this all day for three fights with Frazier and Cosell and various other commentators never mentioned that he should lose points or get dq ed for it. It was probably the deciding factor in the 2nd bout as the fight didn't have any drama beyond the pre-fight hype.

I just didn't like the way Vlad was throwing his punches. He didn't seem to have his customary form and crispness to his shots, especially his right cross, which is a sign of a fighter getting older. He should have had Povetkin out of there, but maybe he was carrying him a little as Ambrose suggests. All the grabbing and leaning looked bad, but I guess you could say just win today, look good next time.

He got the win, but Vlad can't end his career on this note. Sign up Wilder (a fight which HBO would televise hoping for a Wilder win I'm sure) knock him out, then retire says I.

This fight was strange. Did Wlad consider Povetkin a huge threat that he was pushing him down all the time and grabbing? I've never seen him fight this way. Povetkin had the right idea in the early stages of the fight, he was trying to get inside and come in with huge punches. I actually thought for a minute that one might land and knock Wladimir out. I'd like to see him knock Blackstar Wilder out next.

Tall boxers tie up and hold shorter boxers when the shorter boxer gets in punching range. This way they smother them and retain advantage. Its called being smart. Anyone may look at fight films from 50-80 years ago and you'll see it. No controversy there.
Leaning is a tactic which heavier fighters like to use to tire their lighter opponents. It is very tiring to wrestle with a bigger man. Nothing new there and no controversy. But Wlad has added his style of leaning onto smaller opponents: he leans on top of them.
When Haye fought Wladmir, Haye's trainer Adam Booth had Haye dropping on the canvas to try and get points deducted from Wlad and to save energy so that he could continue to run, run, run. No one, and I read boxing news everywhere daily, has ever explained what Haye was doing. I choose CF to reveal it. Some thought Haye was thirsty to suck Wlad's kok -but that's not what he was doing.

I recall the HBO crew talking about Haye's obvious flopping explaining that he was trying to get points taken off of Wlad. It did work late in the fight. I recall Lennox Lewis losing a point against Tyson for leaning on him and then cuffing him to the canvas when he was ready to go. I know Mills Lane wouldn't allow this tactic and could have deducted points or dq'd Wlad if he was the referee yesterday. But I am confident Wlad would have made adjustments and stopped this tactic.

That punch in rd. 2 was so short and fast that I couldn't even see it. I couldn't even see it on the much sharper replay , even playing it over and over. I finally saw it when they showed it from another angle.

Haye flopping down on the deck like his little legs had turned to rubber. Compare that pathetic performance by little Miss Hurt toe with Povetkin's brave effort!

No, Ambrose, i didn't get the impression that Wlad was carrying him. I was suspicious of the odds change because last minute odds changes are always suspicious, but then P's performance justified the lower odds.

Wilder is a hype job, another Great Black Hope/Dope. He hasn't even fought a top ranked heavy yet, let alone beat him. He's fighting a guy who's ranked #84 next.

K. Zimnoch (16-0), beat Wilder in the world amateur championship. Zimnoch fights again next week.

Farm - I thought that if Pov had enough left he might have been able to KO Wlad at the end.

Respect to both. Happily I didn't have to listen to little bug-eyes brilliant commentary as I heard the UK broadcast. David Price was the assistant announcer.

I thought Wladimir fought a great fight, and used superb tactics to decisively win against a game and skilled opponent in Alexander Povetkin. Overall, I am quite impressed with this win when you consider the quality level of his opponent. Ultimately, I think it adds to Wlad's legacy as one of the better opponents he's beaten.

We have to remember, Wlad's not fighting some bum, or some random heavyweight, he's fighting a top-3 rated heavyweight in the world, who is an Olympic Gold Medalist, and is undefeated as a pro. It's not an easy fight (as I said in my prediction before the fight). Moreover, it's infinitely harder to look "impressive" when you're fighting this kind of top opposition. We've seen Wladimir look superb and score sensational blowout KO's recently (KO 4 Mormeck, KO 6 Pianeta), but you know, it's a lot easier to do that against guys like Mormeck and Pianeta than it is against someone like Povetkin.

Wladimir's lead hand (jab and left hook) won the fight, plain and simple. Alex had little to no defense for that. That knockdown in round 2 is among the most sensational knockdowns I've ever seen. That lead punch came out of nowhere and sent Povetkin crashing down in emphatic fashion. Another thing that stood out to me about Wlad's performance was the fact that Povetkin was having such a hard time to hit Wlad cleanly. Wladimir is quite good on his feet and knows how to make his opponent miss! Wladimir displayed amazing power, boxing ability, and defensive maneuvering.

As for Povetkin, he displayed amazing heart and deserves credit for that. His brawling style was at times making Wladimir noticeably uncomfortable. Povetkin's obviously got some power in his shots and seemed to close the distance very well. The area where Alex came up short is in terms of his stamina as well as his defensive abilities. He seemed to tire somewhat as the fight progressed, and also he was a bit too easy for Wlad to land flush on. Looking at Alex's face after the fight, it's obvious he took a lot of punishment and was banged up badly.

Be interesting to see where Povetkin goes from here. In my opinion, Povetkin's probably the best heavyweight in the world other than the Klitschko Brothers. I would comfortably predict Povetkin to beat the likes of Wilder, Stiverne, Solis, Thompson, Adamek, Glazkov, Boytsov, Wach, Chisora, Helenius, and Banks. Povetkin VS Haye, Povetkin VS Pulev, or Povetkin VS Fury would be highly interesting, 50-50 type fights (I could see Povetkin getting the best of all of them though if he comes in good shape!)!

Just viewed the replay. I believe some CFers are being a bit harsh on Wlad. I thought Wlad fought a good strategic fight. Wlad used his entire torso from the waist up to drain Povetkin of his strength. Povetkin did not have the boxing skill or movement to avoid Wlad's tactic. If Povetkin had a nice quick jab, none of the Wlad leaning on him would have occurred or at least have been effective. Another mistake Alex made was not delivering body shots to Wlad when he had one arm free when Wlad held him. His bad.

Wlad laid incredible power shots on Alex. Yet, Alex had the will to withstand them and keep charging. If Wlad connected with the shots he put on Alex, on most of the top 15 heavyweights, they would have been KO'd.

I believe 3 of the knockdowns were real on Povetkin.

Lastly, look at Alex's face. Wlad turned him into Freddie Kruger the Second. I thought Wlad performed well in beating arguably the 3rd or 4th best heavyweight in the world. He used an effective strategy to lay a complete beat down absent a KO on a elite fighter. Congrats to Wlad and the effort put forth by Alex.

Great comments Westside and they fully agree with my own thoughts after watching the fight!

Great comment. The truth is, some of those fights back in the era of black dominance were more exciting (in a more vulgar sense of this word). There was a much greater degree of chaos and therefore uncertainty and therefore suspense and entertainment. Everyone had a "puncher's chance". I mean Buster Douglas dropped the alleged "Baddest man in boxing"! The fighting style was more wild, unintelligent and haphazard. Were they better boxers? In no sense of the definition. Were they more entertaining? Yes. But only in the most vulgar sense of that word (in other words, how that word is understood now). However, to someone with a higher level of appreciation for the art of boxing. No. They were relatively unskilled. In comparison, it was like watching street fights on youtube for all the morbid excitement that can deliver. None had the mastery of Vladimir Klitschko. Order is more "boring" than chaos (to the unwashed masses) but it is the envy of all boxers. Only the greatest can impose order.

Wladimir Klitschkos manager Bernd Bonte said in an interview earlier today that Wladimir's next fight will be in the spring.

http://ua.championat.com/boxing/new...sha-mezhdu-klichko-i-povetkinym-ne-budet.html

I don't know for sure, but I think his next opponent will be the IBF mandatory Kubrat Pulev.

No one knows yet to be sure. Not his manager nor Wladimir. But if he is going to fight Pulev it had better be sooner rather than later. If he waits too long Pulev will out-point him and the dregs will start their banter.

I've been reading the boxing forums and its not just me telling you Wlad fought like it was a tough sparring session. Where were the sustained, vicious attacks of old? Wlad didn't really want to knock Povetkin out. He just wanted to take the fight away from the judges. If you read the statement he made that Carcharias cited, you'll have a little more insight into why Wladimir was carrying Povetkin. But you have to read between the lines.

Yes watch some ESPN level fighters who can't beat legitimate top 5 or so contenders and when they fight guys at their level they can produce entertaining fights. In the late 90's Clifford Ettiene was one guy. Also recently Minto vs Maddalone I was another example of this.

Ambrose - The "sustained vicious attacks of old" went away a long time ago when Wlad learned all about defense. Before that he was tremendously exciting, but also more vulnerable. Povetkin didn't just stand around in punching range letting himself get jabbed to death. He was constantly attacking. I wouldn't take anything away from him by saying Wlad went easy on him. I saw no evidence of that. The opposite in fact, as Wlad was using his whole bag of tricks.

The ratings for Klitschko-Povetkin broke the records for a sporting event in both Ukraine and Russia.

Ryabinsky Andrew @ Ryabinskiy
Today we learned that boxing has seen Oct. 5, at a minimum, 41% of viewers in Russia and 62% in Ukraine. Absolutely record ratings.

I don't assess Povetkin having a one-punch knock-out power. He's dangerous in volume up close. A few rights from Wladimir would have toppled him at those crucial moments when Povetkin was hurt. I saw Wladimir letting him go. By the way, Povetkin did not need to know his adversary was playing cat and mouse with him. Doesn't matter anyway, both go home winners.

Watched the replay. At least in the last part of the fight Vlad seemed to be carrying Povetkin. The last two rounds Vlad could have turned it up and gotten Povetkin out of there if he had he really wanted to do so. If the fight is in Kiev he may well have.
