I love the Winter Olympics and will be glued to the screen the next 2 1/2 weeks. Thought I would start a thread on it since the opening ceremonies are tonight. Mostly white athletes from white countries playing beautiful winter sports, a whitefest in other words. I especially look forward to the speedskating, downhill and alpine skiing events, snowboarding and to see how the unheralded and young USA mens hockey team does. I even like the curling sport and once you know the rules and personalities it is interesting to watch.

I'm moving this to the Other Sports forum, where past Olympics threads have been.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has a sports writer, Bob Smizik,who recently did his best Bryant Gumbel imitation, writing about how boring and non-athletic he thinks the Winter game are. Although he didn't explicitly mention race, the commenters afterward quickly did. I wrote the one from "The Main Don," following which Smizik cut off all mention of race:

as if a few tenths of a second translates into any kind of advantage in "force" which is a stupid concept anyway when trying to explain athleticism. It also means that being heavier is an advantage which is true in some cases not in most others.

The opening and closing ceremonies are always a "multicultural" experience that I largely couldn't care less about. It's the skiing, hockey, snowboarding, figure skating(womens), speedskating, short track speedskating, etc.. that I get excited about.

I am sad that one of the athletes has died. It clearly should have been avoided. It was not even the first time that someone had been hurt on that track. Some of the choices of people to bring in the flag were just as laughable. God love Anne Murray(who is still hot at 63?), but what does she have to do with sports? Or the general? If they were going to have Villeneuve who has nothing to do with the Olympics than Larry Walker who is from BC should have been there too. I did notice that Donovan Bailey and Lummox Lewis weren't invited either. I suspect the drug rumours about Bailey cost him a spot and Lummox's indifference to Canada probably cost him a spot.

Bob Costas is the blandest sportscaster in captivity. Jim McKay must be wincing in his grave. McKay and his friends from ABC *defined* Olympic coverage when I was growing up.

They are both great athletes in their sport but other Americans should get more attention as well. Shaun White and Bode Miller deserve just as much attention as well as a few others.

If they were going to have Villeneuve who has nothing to do with the Olympics than Larry Walker who is from BC should have been there too.

Villeneuve is probably the most famous Canadian sportsman in the world. He's a household name in Europe and much of Asia. He's also French-Canadian and that helps given how these things work in Canada. Larry Walker could walk down any street in Canada and not be recognised.

I was wondering where cocky Donovan Bailey was. I suspect you are right. As I type this I'll bet he's sitting in his mansion seething with anger and blaming racism for his exclusion.

Shani Davis withdrew after Race 1 of the 500 meters Monday night.






Problems with various ice-resurfacing machines caused a lengthy delay. But that's not why Davis dropped out.





Davis finished 18th in the first race with a time of 35.45 seconds, then withdrew to save his energy for the 1,000 on Wednesday night.





When the new start list came out, Davis' name was not on it, and he was seen riding an exercise bike in the warmup room.





"He drew on his inner wisdom. He's focused on the 1,000," said Nathaniel Mills, the former U.S. Olympic speedskater who is serving as Davis' press attaché here in Vancouver. "He got the feeling he wanted and I think this was something he might do anyway. It was just preparation. The lengthy delay made that decision a lot easier. If he had been in medal contention, he would have pushed through.





"Above all, he wants to be fresh and ready for the 1,000, and we're inside 48 hours on that now. The 500 is always the race with the greatest risk of injury. Last year in the 500 at Single Distance Worlds, he tweaked his groin a little bit. All the coaches around him supported the decision, and there were some who didn't even want him to do one 500."

You're right Westside, let's hope it's a lesser medal, if that. If he wins a gold, we will never hear the end of it.

I've been enjoying the Olympics tremendously thus far, the Friday tragedy not withstanding. Watching elite white athletes at their best is a most welcome departure from the garbage that is the NBA and the NFL (sans the white players we root for).

On the anectodal evidence front, I was at the gym both Sunday and Monday. It's a fairly large private club, with many big screen TVs plastered all over. I believe half of all TVs were tuned to NBC for the Oympics and during the 2hrs I was there both days, almost everyone I saw was glued to the TVs, taking longer than normal breaks by watching the various events like snow-boarding, speed-skating, luge, downhill skiing, among others. At least from where I stand, people are very interested in these games, despite what some idiot members of the MSM may pro-claim about the games being boring because of lack of blacks.

Honestly, it's the lack of blacks that makes it that much more fun. Things are exciting, the competition and sportsmanship is at a world class level, and some of the more cool events (such as men's hockey) have yet to start.
