Catch puts him in the spotlight

EAST LANSING -- Before last weekend, Michigan State wide receiver Blair White had rarely attracted much media attention during the Spartans' weekly player interview sessions.

On Tuesday, however, White was understandably the center of attention. After his four-catch, 143-yard performance in MSU's 35-21 win over Michigan, everyone wanted to know more about the walk-on from Saginaw who became a hero for the Spartans on Saturday.

His effort against U-M, which included a 61-yard touchdown catch for MSU's first score of the game, made White even more of a classic feel-good story.

"Well, it's Michigan, and that's obviously our closest rival, and being from Michigan and being around Michigan fans all my life, all the time, it's special for me," White said.

White, a junior, came to MSU as a walk-on in 2005 and redshirted. He appeared in four games in the 2006 season, playing on special teams. In 2007, his workload increased to 10 games, still mostly on special teams. But in the 2008 spring game, he caught four passes for 86 yards and captured attention.

And as head coach Mark Dantonio reminded reporters Tuesday, White was the first wide receiver selected in the team's mock draft for the spring game.

"A lot of people had a lot of belief in Blair before this game, and I think that he's been playing consistently throughout this season," Dantonio said. White has 344 yards on 23 receptions, and the big catch against U-M was his first for a touchdown.

"I always knew he was that playmaker," strong safety Otis Wiley said. "We came here as freshmen, and Blair White's been making plays ever since. Blair White, he showed out. He carried the load for our team."

If there was ever truly a "little brother,"Â it's Blair White.

He walked on at Michigan State three years ago, fully understanding that he might never see meaningful game action. But White was appreciative of the opportunity to compete against the big boys who brought with them the big rep â€" the scholarship players.

And when it mattered most Saturday, there wasn't anybody more memorable than the walk-on.

White is the face of the Spartans' first victory in Ann Arbor in 18 years â€" the little guy who simply says he's tired of getting pushed around and finally pushes back.

White caught only four passes against Michigan, but each one had a significant impact â€" a 61-yard touchdown on the Spartans' first drive and three fourth-quarter receptions that sustained the game-clinching scoring drives.

"There's not a kid on this team who deserves it more than Blair,"Â said quarterback Brian Hoyer afterwards. "It's fitting that when we finally emerged from the shadow of having lost to our biggest rival the last six years, it's somebody like Blair who to delivers big-time."Â

There was a banner hanging outside of Michigan Stadium following the game that caught the attention of delirious MSU fans.

It read: "Little Brother Just Kicked Big Brother's (You Know What)"Â

The victory doesn't alter the sibling pecking order. It was a well-deserved win for the Spartans, but it's ludicrous to suggest it will provide the catalyst to a seismic shift in state power.

But what Michigan State's win validated was Mark Dantonio's unabashed recognition that beating the Wolverines will now and forever be MSU football's primary mission statement.

He got the celebratory Gatorade shower as the final seconds ticked down. Some might think such a festive expression was over-the-top for a game between two flea-bitten mutts, but Dantonio wasn't apologizing for making it known to all who'd listen how badly he wanted this win.

Michigan State tried giving this game away through the first three quarters, but these Wolverines aren't equipped to take advantage of such generosity. There were familiar moments of impending Spartan spontaneous combustion in the fourth quarter, but each time it was White catching a third-down pass or drawing a crucial defensive pass interference.

Michigan could be forgiven for wondering, "Who the heck was this guy?"Â

"I'm probably one of the last guys people would expect to see in this situation,"Â White said, "but I think it's a credit to our coaches that they reward hard work. This is a big win with what Coach D is trying to do here, and I'm just delighted that I was able to contribute. I've come a long way."Â

Dantonio put White on scholarship this season. It was an emotional moment when he made the announcement to the team during the summer.

"People had tears in their eyes,"Â said Hoyer, "because they knew how much he had sacrificed and how hard he worked to get into this position."Â

As proud as Dantonio sounded of his team's collective efforts, he looked proudest when talking about White's contributions and the road traveled.

"You don't know who is going to be the stars in this game,"Â he said. "Blair came in and had a huge play on the first third down. And then he goes 60-plus yards on a slant. It was a big play. Blair is a gamer and a tremendous competitor."Â

White becomes the perfect symbol for these Spartans. They're grinders.

Michigan State "officially"Â remains in the Big Ten title chase, but that's a fruitless aspiration. But the idea of a New Year's Day game remains very much alive for the Spartans. They could wind up in the Capital One Bowl or Outback Bowl.

Dantonio already had assured himself of becoming the second Michigan State coach in history to reach a bowl game in his first two seasons. But this win makes Dantonio the first Michigan State football coach to win seven games in each of his first two seasons.

There are only two teams in the Big Ten this season that are worth anything from a national standpoint â€" Penn State and Ohio State. And you probably can't trust either of those teams in any game beyond the pedestrian security of the Big Ten schedule.

But the Spartans took a step toward perhaps defining themselves as the best of the Little Nine.

What a performance. This guy is like Mike Hass but has the blinding speed to go with it. We could be seeing another Kevin Curtis type at the next level. Collie will need to go to a team where he can start however and we know how that goes in the NFL. They usually take the best white college players in the country and either burry them at the end of the roster or just cut them. This kid is amazing. Maybe things will turn out ok. At least Jordy Nelson is playing even though he should be a number 1 or 2 receiver. Hopefully he will work his way up. Guys like Hass and Ball never even got a fair chance.


With another huge game today, maybe Austin Collie can take over the number 1 spot in receiving for Div.IA in the nation. That would be awesome!

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Blair White is no Devin Thomas.

In at least one way, White has surpassed Michigan State's 2007 standout receiver, a second-round pick of the Washington Redskins.

Despite catching 79 passes for 1,260 yards last season, Thomas never had back-to-back games like the performances White had in comeback wins over Michigan and Wisconsin the past two Saturdays.

In fact, no Spartan since Biletnikoff Award recipient Charles Rogers in 2002 has matched White's contributions in consecutive triumphs.

If White can reach triple digits in receiving yards Saturday against Purdue, the junior walk-on from Saginaw can join Andre Rison, Derrick Mason and Rogers as just the fourth Michigan State receiver to reach that milestone three straight weeks.

"I've always seen him catch the ball very, very effectively," Spartans coach Mark Dantonio said. "He's a very good athlete. He's a 36-inch vertical jump guy. He can run. And he's big -- 6-foot-2, 205 pounds. But what he has been able to do is find the seam, work in there and make the catch. I think he has always been a guy our quarterbacks have felt very good about going to."

White has felt pretty good about that, too, maintaining his confidence and outworking other players to gain playing time and surprising opportunities.

He had four catches for 143 yards, including the game's first touchdown from 61 yards out, in a 35-21 win at Michigan 10 days ago.

And just when people were starting to say, "White can't do that when a defense shadows him," he had career highs with seven catches for 164 yards in a 25-24 escape against Wisconsin.

"I've been productive the past two weeks, but guys have been stepping up all year," White said. "Mark Dell made plays earlier this season before getting banged up a little. B.J. Cunningham has made some clutch catches, too."

Part of that success is putting oneself in position to make big plays. For White, that meant convincing his teammates and his coaches that he belonged on the field.

"He has gotten opportunities and made great plays," Dantonio said. "He has made the most of all his opportunities. And I think what has happened, whether it has been Mark Dell or Blair White or Charlie Gantt, or B.J. or Keshawn Martin at times, they've picked up the slack with the loss of Devin. He caught 70-plus passes last year over 13 games. But there was a big drop-off after that."

With a strength-in-numbers philosophy, No. 18 Michigan State (8-2, 5-1 Big Ten) has spread the ball around. White's 30 catches leads the team. But Dell has 27, Cunningham 25 and star running back Javon Ringer 20. That list doesn't include tight end Gantt, who has 14 grabs, including four for scores.

"There's no question that the depth at wide receiver is one of this team's strengths," White said. "And the competition for playing time has been good for all of us. We continue to push each other at practice."

If White can help push the Spartans past Purdue (3-6, 1-4) this week, rest up with a bye, then stun No. 3 Penn State in Happy Valley, his team will share the conference title. It also will reach the Rose Bowl for the first time in 21 years.

no one, especially not a black kid, is going to stand aside and just give you a spot on the field if you're a white athlete. you have to take it from someone else, usually a black guy.

that means you have to step up, speak up, and get up every time you get knocked down.

i just flipped on the idiot box and caught a bit of the Marylad-Virginia Tech game, and can you believe i saw a white kid at wide receiver for the Hokies?! first time i've ever seen that!

anyway, his name is Danny Coale, and he is a redshirt freshman who just happens to lead the team in catches.

of course, Va Tech doesn't throw the ball much.

equally as impressive, Coale is arguably THE best athlete on the team.

during his redshirt year, he posted a 35 1/2-inch vertical jump and a 4.42 time in the 40 on the way to Iron Hokie honors! woo hoo! he's another young talent to keep an eye on. good luck Coale!

That is something that Joe Martinek of Rutgers should do. Today he had 2 carries for 51 yards with a key 45 yard TD. He now has the two longest runs on the team despite having the least carries of the 4 RBs at Rutgers and has the best YPC by far.

He is also NJs all-time leading rusher, so he has a H.S resume too that would indicate this is no fluke. He should speak up and tell Greg Shiano that his top-notch production along with the fact that no other RB has ran away with the starting job at all on the field should prove that he should see more carries! Let's give some applause for Austin Collie of Byu. For the second consecutive week, he is the number one wide receiver in the nation in receiving yards per game. Mike Hass was the last one of our guys to lead the nation. Let's hope the Collie can finish out the season on top and then help take Byu to a BCS Game. They only have 1 loss all year and Austin is as fine a receiver as I have ever seen. Way to go Cougars.
