White RBs and 100-yard games

Thanks for the reply, Heretic. There have only been three white RB's selected in the first round of the NFL Draft dating back to 1974 and all three were from Stanford: Muster ('88), Vardell ('92) and McCaffery ('17)....You could also throw in Toby Gerhart, who was drafted in round two, but could've been a first rounder and almost won the Heisman, as a tailback.

Nebraska has had a lot of fantastic fullback's (Schlesinger, Makovika brothers, Janovich, ect.) over the years, but haven't produced a single impact white tailback since the early 1970's. How does that happen? Huskers could not produce an Alstott or even a Luke Staley or Zach Line type in over four decades?

Last time I checked, Nebraska wasn't/isn't Mississippi with a large black population and they haven't been full Caste for a decades like Oklahoma?

Could an Eric Crouch, Scott Frost or Gerry Gdowski type goy did it given a chance? All were non NFL prospects at quarterback. I vaguely remember Gerry Gdowski, a Nebraska track-legend*, who almost rushed for 1,000 yards as a senior. Perhaps could've been the star tailback that could've vied for the Heisman Trophy?

P.S.: Last week I saw Gdowski's name, he's currently the quarterbacks coach at Vanderbilt. That's why I remembered him. Man, he was lightning fast!
Yeah, if I remember correctly, Gdowski was a walk-on that finally got a chance to start when he was a Senior. I remember being impressed with him back in the day...way surpassing my expectations, probably because he was initially an unheralded walk-on when he should've been given a scholarship. I can't remember right off hand if he had to serve a racial apprenticeship or not.

Here's what I can recall without a whole lot of research:
Josh Davis was a co-starter for Nebraska in 2003 under Solich. He rushed for 600 yards that year. I think he broke some team record for KO return yardage as well, but he was from Colorado.

Burkhead was a lightly-recruited 3-star player offered by Pelini and was a starter, but he was from Texas.

Then, of course, there was homegrown talent Danny Woodhead, who was ignored by Nebraska staff.

They currently have homegrown talent RB Mazour (a Senior next year, put on scholarship by Frost last year) on their roster. He was the third string RB last year and should get more opportunities in 2019. He was the most effective RB when they played Michigan this year (which wasn't saying much as they were blown out, but he had a couple of nice runs and a TD) and was the leading rusher against Bethune with 55 yards. He had a very good Spring game last year as well.

Then there was this player, homegrown, a few years ago that I believe lead the team in rushing two years in a row in the Spring Game, which “earned” him a 5th or 6th spot in the RB rotation (“best player plays”, right?) and was moved to FB in his SR year (at 6’ 210lbs).

Thanks, Heretic. I actually remember Josh Davis fairly well. He wound up signing with the New York Jets in 2004 and did well. Of course, he did not last long with Herm "A.C. Edwards" as coach -- I dubbed him @ss Clown Edwards.

Back in that era the Jets had a GM, Terry Bradway, that was not hostile to whites at "Caste positions". Thing is A.C. Edwards, a mulatto who used to brag about having a German mother, would always find a way to get rid of them after Bradway brought them in: White draft picks were relegated to spot duty and special teams; undrafted white free agents were totally purged prior to week 1 and rarely even made the practice squad.

I believe when Josh Davis was with the Jets, it was mentioned he was a second generation RB at Nebraska. I think he was the son of a goy named Tony Davis*, who was a 1,000 yard rusher at Nebraska and a NFL 4th round pick. Despite being a superstar at Nebraska and a 4th round pick, Tony Davis never made much of an impact in the NFL beyond special teams in six years.

As an aside, I remember in the early part of the A.C. Edwards era the Jets had a UFA safety from Hofstra named Doug Shanahan, who was also one the premiere lacrosse players in the nation. He fared well with the Jets in pre-season games, but never even made the practice squad. Comical point regarding Shanahan was the Kosher media in New York acknowledged his strong showing with the Jets in pre-season, but claimed he was better off devoting his time to pro lacrosse....as if any moron didn't know pro lacrosse players basically play for free and NFL practice squad players could possibly make close to $100,000 a year in the early 2000's?

Don and WIR, you are correct. Both Vardell and Muster where power backs, who could've been listed as RB's or FB's. I vividly recall during a Sunday Night game against the Colts** in 1991 Walter Payton was a guest in the booth and said something like this: "Brad Muster is best all-purpose running back in football".....I believe, like Vardell, he was drafted by non-Caste Clown Mike Ditka as a traditional (1970's and prior) fullback that carried the ball a lot, caught screens and blocked. Problem with Muster is he always seemed "dinged up" with minor injuries by his 4th season. Similar to Toby Gerhart.....When Ditka left and ultra Caste-Slut Dave Wannstedt came in and signed Merril Hoge to be his "blocking-back", Muster left Chicago for a big contract in New Orleans. But N.O. had been totally caste for several years at that point and he was relegated to mostly blocking and catching. He didn't last long, as seemingly constant "nagging injuries" forced him out of the league at 29. Again, very much like Gerhart.

Muster was tall for a running back at 6' 3", the same height as Eric Dickerson, and though Pro Football Reference lists his playing weight as 235 pounds, his build was almost on the lean side as he never fit the mold of a fullback, which is likely why he was nicked up a lot. It was just another case of the Caste System trying racially to squeeze a square peg into a round hole.

And though Truthteller is accurate about Ditka being the rare non-Caste clown, Muster should have been used as a tailback, period. Ditka went further than most head coaches of the time but never far enough to really challenge the status quo. When he coached the Saints in '99, lightning fast Keith Poole finished second in the league in average yards per reception with 19.0, but still he only had 42 receptions for the season as he was used as a third receiver, not a starter. Of course, those numbers for Poole in '99 were like being in utopia compared to what happened after the despicable Jim Haslet took over for Ditka the next season and greatly reduced Poole's playing time before cutting him, with his NFL career ending the next season after he had five catches for the Broncos. (Poole for his NFL career averaged 18.1 yards per catch but only played five years and had just 96 receptions.)

I enjoyed the Tommy Vardell Highlights you posted as well as Todd Kinchen's. I think Brad Muster actually rushed for more yards than Vardell. I tried to look up some highlights of Muster, but couldn't find them. Can you or anyone else find some footage on Muster?
Thanks

I couldn't find any types of highlights of Muster. Sometimes though if you check back periodically something's posted on YouTube, but often then is taken down quickly.

It's a shame that finding highlights of so many White players from before roughly 2000 is so difficult, they might as well have played in the 1920s or earlier.

Here's a 12 second Keith Poole touchdown that shows his speed, but the footage is so grainy it looks like it's from Red Grange's era (has to be watched on YouTube):

All I could find on Muster was more of a lowlight , Ditka called a half back option and Muster got stuffed at the 1 in the playoffs against the Giants in 1990. He may have more highlights in the year in review of the Bears season but I haven't looked much beyond that play.....

Carolina, please check the top of your screen, I sent you a message yesterday regarding YouTube and Brad Muster...In short, can't find highlights, but there is a full game in 1992 posted on YouTube (Atlanta @ Chicago Week 4), when he had a great day. Bears also had several other top whites at that point, including a starting white receiver and a unicorn -- white cornerback. The non-caste party ended the next season when Ditka was fired and team trended full caste!

Freethinker, inspired by Zach Zenner's "almost 100 yard game" I started scanning rushing stats from 1980 to current to see how many goys never had a 100 yard game, but did have over 90: List so far includes Zack Zenner, Danny Woodhead, Rick Feeney (Minnesota, 1990), Travis Jervey (Green Bay, 1998), David Hughes (Seattle, 1983) and Jim Jensen (Denver, 1980).

However, I did incidentally find a RB we overlooked: Jim Jodat, who I believe is white, ran for 117 yards in game @ Washington in 1980....So that is a name that can added/edited to on the list.

I would hope all these names (even the somewhat obscure ones) would help bring people to CF, via Net searches for their names. But my guess is the Lonsmen over at Google and Yahoo have rigged the algorithms so Caste Football is almost impossible to find.

Yeah. I thought I saw that post on phone yesterday and came home to look at, Muster's 1992 game, but it's not on my page anymore. I can look it up on you tube or you can try and post it again. Does everyone else have the Brad Muster 1992 game?
Thanks T!

Jim Jodat was white, which you could have discovered by a Google search. The Rams used him some at RB in 1978 As he was their fastest RB with Wendell Tyler injured but he had a fumbling problem and failed in a critical spot (subbing for an injured John Cappelletti) in the NFC Title Game loss to the Cowboys. In 1979 Jodat was the Rams special team captain. The next year he was traded to Seattle.

Jim Jodat died in 2015 of cancer, age 61.

While searching for game film on Brad Muster, I ran across a MNF game between the Bears and Vikings from 1992. Wanting to see if and how much Muster played, I decided to watch mostly the Bears offense and occasionally the Bears defense. Well, to my initial surprise Muster got the second carry of the game. A 8-9 yard gain and the Bears seemingly were moving the ball, but were stalled. On the next series Muster again got a carry for 6-7 yards all the while blocking for the Bears Neal Anderson. Again the drive stalled while the Vikings went on to score. With score 7-0, I believe, the Bears put in Darren Lewis whom the announcers began to rave about, so he fumbles on his first carry giving the ball back to the Vikings. Anyway, don't mean to bore you, but the announcers, Al Michaels and Dan Dierdorf were really talking this guy up never mind they he was busted for cocaine use during the 1991 NFL combine. I thought it was interesting watching an NFL game in the 90's when it began to get really dark, but noticed how well the few white players on the field played. Muster had another carry for 11 yards and 2 receptions for about 15 yards. Remember Bears WR Tom Waddle. He a few receptions. The Bears LB Jim Morrissey played well, leading the team in tackles, as did the great DE Trace Armstrong. Another guy not so popular here, Vikings MLB Jack Del Rio, I think the only white player starting on the Vikings defense intercepted 2 passes and ran one back for a TD and made several great tackles stopping the Bears Neal Anderson cold.
I looked up the Bears RB stats for 1992 and Muster averaged 4.2 yards per carry and 11.4 per reception, while Anderson averaged 3.7 per carry and 9.5 per reception.
Whatever happened to that RB Darren Lewis they were slobbering over? He had some pretty good carries late in the game when the reserves were on defense for Minnesota with the game over. However, in 1993 he was charged with battery in a domestic disturbance, continued his cocaine addiction and in 2014 pleaded guilty to three criminal charges related to armed robberies in the Dallas area. He was given a 27 year term in federal prison, sad.
Muster looked like a lot white RB's that get screwed. He was big, fast, good hands, good blocker, but I guess his 6- yards per carry, catching both passes for good gains and showing his blocking ability, during the game, just wasn't good enough to be the starting RB. Oh yeah, he did miss one block, maybe that's what happened.

This is a photo of George Sauer, along with Don Maynard, they were Joe Namath's WR pair during Namath's glory years.

And what a pair they were, though Sauer had a very short career. Imagine Jordy Nelson paired with Eric Decker in his prime or a Jeff Janis who was allowed to develop, that's what the Jets had in the 1960s.

I appreciate all the research being done in this thread. With the internet, history basically begins in the year 2000 as far as finding information and videos on past athletes. Pro Football Reference reveals stats but nothing else. Someone could probably make some money through clicks and subscribers by gaining access to footage of NFL players from roughly pre-2000 and compiling highlight reels. I know I've searched many times for highlights of Patrick Jeffers' fantastic 1999 season with the Carolina Panthers, but there's nothing and I doubt there ever will be. Well, once there was a 12 second video of a 90 yard Jeffers touchdown but it disappeared a few weeks later.

Thanks to all that replied in this thread. Carolina, while searching for runners with 90 yard plus games yesterday I was reminded how ugly things were (and still are) during the 90's and beyond. Particularly after 1993 when Muster and Hoge were pretty much finished and Vardell was injured, then relegated to "blocking fullback" when he came back.

If you take out Mike Alstott, there was not a single white (non-quarterback) that ran for 345 yards in a season between 1994 and 2010 -- Peyton Hillis' third season. Think about it, that's 17 seasons....In those 17 season only three whites even ran for 300 yards in a season: Travis Jervey 325, Brian Leonard 303 and Hillis ran for 343 as a rookie. Just stunning!

Chicago takes on the Eagles today with the NFC's Pre-Season rushing leader (R. Nall) still rotting away on the practice squad. Kind of reminded me of the 1993 season when the Pittsburgh Steelers had a local goy dominate in the Pre-Season, only to disappear in black-hole of the caste system. His name is Randy Cuthbert and I'm sure Don will remember him well. Even though he did make the Steelers roster as a rookie and suited up 11 games, he only had one 7 yard rush and a three yard reception his entire career. Basically he just covered kicks on special teams for parts of two seasons. Perhaps had he come along a couple seasons earlier Noll would've given him the same chance as Merrill Hoge?

Don is correct, sometimes it's real hard to find photos, stories and facts of decades gone by. I've been searching for stats or stories from Pittsburgh's five Pre-Season games from 1993 and can't find much. Again, I remember Cuthbert was outstanding. Today, for the first time I looked up his college stats and they are fantastic. Imagine a black halfback setting several rushing records and leading Duke to an ACC football title, yet not being drafted?

https://fasstelitecamps.com/about/randy-cuthbert/

P.S.: In the early 200o's Cowher's Steelers had another local goy make it as a running back briefly: 27 year old rookie R.J. Bowers....But I'll save that story for another day, perhaps?

I remember RJ Bowers - If I recall he was a hugely productive RB at Grove City College and bounced between the Steelers and Browns for a few years in the early 00s. One of those players I discovered playing Madden.

Truthteller, I had been racking my brain over the last couple of days trying to remember Cuthbert. Thanks. I knew there was a great white RB at Duke in the 90's when Duke last won an ACC title. Cuthbert had two 1,000 yard seasons and averaged 5.5 yards per carry one year and 4.8 for his career at Duke!
Thanks again!

We talked about RJ Bowers in some earlier posts a year or so....I remember him well...
Played baseball for awhile then went to a Grove City which is near Slippery Rock....
He nearly had 100 yards rushing in a game late in the season while the regulars were resting.....Tough player, got shafted, like Randy C.

Weird thing is, what other school has even come close to Stanford in, say, the last 30 years?

Can't think of any, perhaps Purdue and some other Big Ten schools (Penn State, Iowa, Wisconsin) have produced some decent RB's, but most were fullbacks in college and the NFL. Mike Alstott was a very rare exception. Even the "Academic Schools" like Northwestern, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt and Duke rarely feature a white RB.

Thanks Carolina, I'm quoting myself from a recent post. I was bemoaning the fact that even most of the "Academic Schools" don't use white tailbacks. But that wasn't always the case. At about the same time Cuthbert was a star tailback at Duke, Northwestern had a great tailback named Bob Christian*. After Cuthbert left the Steelers he tried to make the expansion Carolina Panthers as a fullback, but was beaten out by Christian. Unfortunately Bob was forced to bulk up for three (wasted) years and become a blocking back, but unlike Cuthbert he did have long NFL career. Christian even got to run the ball a bit towards the end of his career.

Could college stars Cuthbert and Christian been starting NFL running backs, or even 450 to 600 yard a season type rotation goys? I suppose we'll never know. My guess is both could've had fine NFL careers as starters. Heck, Bob Christian averaged 6.5 YPC on 44 carries in the NFL at age 33!

Don, thanks for the link. Lots of terrific posters, unfortunately, not seen at this site in a while. "Groundfighter" is one I can't forget and miss. Cowher was horrible and I remember that vividly. I also recall how he slowly, but surely became a bit "less caste" as his career advanced, which did nothing to help the likes of Danny Farmer, Jeremy Staat and Scott Shields, high picks at "taboo positions" he seemed to enjoy jerking around.

I guess with Nall still glued to the practice squad, Cuthbert just randomly "popped into my head" today. I know he was great during the 1993 Pre-Season, but can't seem to find any of those stats and stories about his summer of 1993 exploits to validate my memories. Per my recollection, it was very similar to Nall's showing in 2018. Sad thing is, Cuthbert was a much bigger star in college, when compared to Nall. Randy had consecutive 1,000 yard seasons in the ACC and even went to the Senior Bowl.

Leonardfan, as Rocky B. pointed out, Bowers had a brief career, but ran well in 2 games he played. Reportedly scouts (or whoever?) told him he'd be a 3rd to 5th round pick.**

P.S.: Just wanted to leave on "positive note" tonight: Four Chicago Bears RB's had 13 carries for 36 yards today, while Nall was relegated to the practice squad.

Could college stars Cuthbert and Christian been starting NFL running backs, or even 450 to 600 yard a season type rotation goys? I guess we'll never know. My guess is both could've had fine NFL careers as starters. Heck, Bob Christian averaged 6.5 YPC on 44 carries in the NFL at age 33!

Christian McCaffrey finishes 2018 6th in rushing yards and becomes the first White player to finish in the top 10 in rushing since Craig James finished 9th in 1985.
Alstott never did it and Hillis finished 11th in 2010 (though he was the 2nd best fantasy RB as I well remember).
Wow. Longer than I had thought.

McCaffrey was 4th going in to the last weekend and they barely played him causing him to drop from 4th to 6th in rushing. Some people say why risk it for a non playoff team. Well
the Giants played Saquan Barkley the whole game and they were not a playoff team. It really pissed me off that he didn't get to play much the last game. He deserved to be a top 5 or
top 4 back in the stats. So he is better than the 6th place he finished in. Also he had almost 100 fewer carries than some of the other top running backs.

Welcome to the forum.

I had thought Hillis ranked higher in rushing in '10, but he was also a great receiver, and I don't use that word lightly, he had great hands. He had 61 receptions for 477 yards in '10 to go with his rushing yardage. It was in his rookie year in '08 that he had a huge receiving game against Miami after the Broncos' black RBs started getting injured one by one and Hillis started to get touches. He showed a lot both running and receiving that year, but we're all familiar with how Josh McDaniels sent him to purgatory the next season before his breakthrough year with Cleveland.
