Wow we finally have an elite white american long jumper again! I love the drive to succeed at the highest level that both the dad and the son have. That is the kind of mentality it takes to get to the top. Just look at Richard Kilty defying all the odds to win the world indoor championship in the 60 meters. The hungriest person who trains the hardest will often win despite overwhelming odds. You can measure determination or the size of someones heart & will to succeed. Keep it up Corey. Damn I'm proud of this kid.

Wow unbelievable it's probably been 2 generations since a White American has been even on the fringes of the world class scene. This song is a tribute to this accomplishment.....:dance:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3Lc1wQYuMM

Great article on Corey Crawford of Rutgers. He jumped nearly 27ft this year. I believe he is the longest, white American jumper of all-time.

i hope i'm not beating a dead horse here, but the article provides more support for my hypothesis that fast White kids rarely go out for track. i detail that idea in the thread Just run, baby!

according to the intriguing article on Crawford, he never even considered running track until his baseball career stalled.

from the article said:
Corey always had natural speed. His nickname on his youth soccer team was "Wheels." He batted leadoff in baseball and stole tons of bases. But it took a stroke of fortune for him to find his potential with track.

His junior year at Indian Hills, Corey says he was stuck behind roughly nine seniors on the school’s loaded baseball team. Looking at little chance of playing much varsity, he gave up baseball and focused on track.

I think you've got a good point Jimmy.
For decades baseball was America's sport. And although it's lost some popularity, for kids who aren't big or tall (for football and basketball), baseball and soccer are the obvious choices.
Track is not really on the radar for many kids.

Greg Rutherford, the red-headed Olympic LJ Champ, ran 10.44 today.
Pretty good time for a guy who doesn't train as a sprinter.
In fact, faster than a lot of European sprinters.

Czech long jumper, Radek Juska, set a new national record of 8.29 meters. That's about 27ft and 2-3/8 inches.
Meanwhile, Jacob Fincham-Dukes of Oklahoma St (and also from England), won the Big 12 Long Jump title with a jump of 7.87m/25-10.0.

MILTIÁDIS TENTÓGLOU his a 27.2 today to win the long jump at the Euro team champs. He is only 21 years old, so has a big upside.
