Gavern stops Ding-a-Ling Man

WBC CABOFE heavyweight champion Jason "The Sensation"Â￾ Gavern (20-7-4, 9 KOs) retained his title via seventh-round TKO over Darnell "The Ding-A-Ling Man"Â￾ Wilson (23-12-3, 20 KOs) at 1:44 of the seventh round on Saturday evening at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, Florida. The fight stayed extremely tight on the scorecards as both men traded big shots often and early. During one heated exchange, Gavern stepped deftly to his right, unleashing a wicked right hand and left hook. The punch opened a gaping gash over Wilson's left eye. Referee Frank Santore immediately brought Wilson to have the ring doctor look at the wound and advised him not to continue.

Da Bomb detonates Taylor

In the main event of Windy City Fight Night 16, presented by Dominic Pesoli's 8 Count Productions, at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago, local super middleweight Donovan "DA BOMB"Â￾ George outgunned and stopped slick boxer Maxell Taylor the eighth round. George (22-1-1, 19 KOs) pressed forward the whole night, winging shots at his opponent's head, body, arms, and elbows. Baltimore's Taylor (15-3-1, 6 KOs) circled, landing jabs and the occasional combination from the outside. George's pressure paid off in the eigth, when he caught Taylor in the corner, opening up with furious lefts and rights sending Taylor sprawling to the canvas. The game Taylor got to his feet, but soon after George pinned him to the ropes letting loose with an onslaught of unanswered punches, forcing referee Gino Rodriguez to wave it off at 2:05 of Round 8.

I saw Donovan George fight a while back and I wasn't sure if he was White or mestizo. I did a search now and he lists himself as White on his myspace page. He should drop the nickname or else change it to "The Bomb" at least.

Jesse Brinkley will face unbeaten Afflete Peter Quillin 23-0(17) on April 29. The fight will be in Brinkley's backyard of Reno, Nevada.


Jones to defend against Coyne

Irish Outlaw Boxing has announced unbeaten WBA #8 rated Ryan ‘The Irish Outlaw' Coyne (16-0, 6 KOs) has signed a contract to challenge WBA cruiserweight world champion Guillermo Jones (37-3-2, 29 KOs) for the WBA title. In order to properly train for this world title bout, Ryan has withdrawn from his currently scheduled bout on April 29th at the Orpheum Theatre in St. Louis. The bout between Coyne and Jones is tentatively slated for July 27.

I gotta be honest, I would lean to favouring Brinkley over Quillin in that fight.

Brinkley, though limited, is a very tough guy. Went 9 rounds with Bute, after surviving a tremendous bodyshot in round 5 that would have KO'd 99% of guys.

Brinkley is a decent B level fighter. He's got some boxing and offensive skills, comes to fight, staying power, and he's fought and done well against good levels of opposition.

Quillin is an overrated black American (similar to Berto, Kirkland, Jacobs thought not as bad)

I like Brinkley's chances on an upset provided he receives fair officiating and specifically judging (as the fight will most likely go the distance)

It was a mixed bag for two White American fighters. Novelty fighter Tommy Z destroyed his cannon fodder opponent and Top Rank realized cruiser weights should fight cruiser weights. Mike Marrone was ko'd by the old Touch of Stiff Williamson. Marrone is a guy that should be fighting at cruiser weight if he can make the weight and be healthy as he doesn't look like a true heavyweight when he scales about 220 pounds. I'm only bringing this up because of 5 fighters failing the commission drug screen and one of them was the morbidly obese Andy Ruiz.... From Fight News:Five fighters suspended

Popular Baltimore Ravens defensive back Tommy Zbikowski is among those listed. The others include heavyweight Andy Ruiz Jr., lightweight John "Action"Â￾ Jackson, lightweight Terrance Roy and light heavyweight David Robinson. Most commissions normally only test fighters participating in title fights, however for Saturday night's card they tested all the fighters.

I don't know what this means, but Tommy Z originally tested positive for THC, now the follow up test is negative. Maybe Andy Ruiz is built like Fatty Arbuckle because of marijuana.

"In front of an excited, partisan crowd, Undefeated Baltimore, MD cruiserweight Russ "The Hammer"Â￾ Shiflett captured the vacant WBF (World Boxing Foundation) All-America's Cruiserweight title with an eight-round majority decision over Bronx, NY's Newton "The Butcher"Â￾ Kidd at the Du Burns Arena in Baltimore. Shiflett came out very aggressively in the first couple of rounds, but the Jamaican-born Kidd used strong counter-punching to work his way back into the bout.

The bout turned Shiflett's way for good in the seventh round when he began to batter Kidd all across the ring. Shiflett did not score a knockdown in the round but he gained complete control of the contest.

Judge Gary Camponeschi saw the draw at 76-76 while judges Kenny Chevalier and Don Risher scored the contest 78-74 and 78-75 for
Shiflett, who is now 12-0-1, five KO's."
