Interesting. Goldberg mentioned during the fight that he was 5-11. Typically the media will overstate an athlete's height, not understate it! 6-2 looks about right though.

The fight is on Google Video for now.

Thanks for the link. I just watched the fight. It looked like Franklin had no strength or power from the get go. His strikes had no snap. Silva looks like a long , lanky, wiry stick without much bulk or muscle. You would think a strong grappler could wrap him up and toss him all over the place. He has been submitted a few times. Franklin offered no resistance at one point, he must have been hurt by an early punch or kick.

How do you think Lindland would do? Would the clinch eat him alive, too?

Lindland could beat him. There are others around. Silva isn't a superman, despite having handled Franklin so easily. I won't be surprised if Rich beats him in a rematch, *if* he is fully recovered both mentally and physically from this fight.

I've never seen Silva on the ground. How good is he there?

He is a black belt in BJJ. But so is Kenny Florian. I expect we will find out about Silva's ground game in one of his next few fights. Whoever fights him after this one will want to take Silva to the ground to avoid the clinch, unless they're a Muay Thai-trained striker like him.

Bart and I have been discussing via PM the hate for guys like Rich Franklin and Matt Hughes on some of the mixed martial art's message boards. I recently read one post at MMA.tv that laid out some of the reasons for this phenomenon. I don't believe it is *always* about race with most of these guys; many of them are just juvenile idiots, and this post highlights that fact indubitably:

This was posted by 'legbender' at MMA.tv:

...this place is like room full of liitle gremlin trolls. When you come on here, trying to bring in any positive, they will jump down your throat. Simple as that.

They are glad Rich lost.

Rich was popular, athletic, has a great attitude, respectful, markeable, humble and hard working.

Thay hated him for it, because he represents EVERYTHING that they will never be. To see him lose, brings joy to their pathetic lives. They get to go back to Burger King tomorrow, just like their father undoubtedly did, and work the fryer and say.

"Damn, that grease burn kinda hurt, but at least I am not Rich Franklin, who got KO'ed Saturday..".

I think Rich is still a champ, because I do[n't] need some Fighting Organization to tell me he is. His work ethic and dedication tells me he is. You either get it, or you dont. I am glad to see you get it.

I read on mixedmartialarts.com that rich franklin had a bad case of the flu going into the fight, this may be why he lost

Silva will have to fight the winner of TUF 4 and I suspect that may turn out to be Travis Lutter. Lutter has an excellent ground game and has beaten Pele Landis, who's style and build are very similar to Silva's. So Silva's reign may very well be short lived. I think Franklin will be back better than ever and eventually recapture the title. In this sport very rarely does anyone look great each and every time they perform.

Absolutely. If anything, the fact that a dominant champion was beat within three minutes just goes to show that the division is depleted (like the HW division, which goes without saying.) So by that logic, Silva now becomes a "de facto" dominant champion since he manhandled the previous dominant champ. But he will be defeated. I just hope it's sooner than later.

As for Lindland, he handled himself very well against a physically strong LHW fighter in Quinton Jackson, so one would have to think that he's stronger than Silva. And he did finish Jeremy Horn, while Silva had to settle for a decision. Not saying that means a whole lot, but it may mean that Lindland can do enough to survive the stand up and muscle him to the ground quickly enough to avoid serious damage. On the other hand, Lindland isn't in the UFC. That may be a tiny problem.

He is a black belt in BJJ. But so is Kenny Florian.

So do we need someone who is as freakishly strong at 185 as Sherk is at 155/ 170? Hmm.... Edited by: JD074

I cannot express how saddened and disgusted I am by this result. I can only think that Franklin had either started taking it easy after two easy defenses, or perhaps the injuries he suffered in his last fight curtailed his training too much. This is a bad, bad day, purely because we live in a society so racist that it will use any happening in what should be pure and enjoyable sports to attack the dignity of Whites.

I do believe Lindland could be the MW UFC champion anytime he likes. For whatever reason, the UFC has not desired to play ball with him.

From what I have seen of Silva he is a deadly striker but he really has the build for striking. He can be muscled around. In the 185 pound class I don't know who can beat right now, but he definately is beatable....

While disappointed I'm not going to worry too much about the Franklin loss. We lost a white champion but remember we gained one as well in Mr. Sherk.

I too would love to see Lindland fight Silva but it's not going to happen anytime soon. A rematch with Franklin would be nice...if Silva can hold onto the belt long enough.

We have Pride "Real Deal" this Saturday if I'm not mistaken. I don't think that card has any glaring white/ non-white match-ups but I could be wrong. We will get to see Fedor again finally.
