This weekend’s Light Heavyweight championship bout at UFC 192 between Alexander Gustafsson and Daniel Cormier will be a great opportunity for the first white UFC light heavyweight champion to be crowed since Forrest Griffin 7 years ago. Gustafsson, the once-promising 6’ 5” Swedish mauler who took disgraced former champion, Jon Jones, to the absolute brink 2 years ago (many believe he won the fight) is coming off a devastating loss to Anthony “Rumble” Johnson. He’ll be tested early and often against the rotund, yet admittedly-talented Negro, Cormier. Cormier, the former Olympic wrestler, is an extremely intelligent fighter who can flat out brawl, has the UFC’s best wrestling, and can withstand major punching power with the ability to recover…

Alex Gustafsson, the division’s most diverse striker, also has some of best takedown defense in the promotion and has great takedown ability himself. Both he and Cormier fought Jon Jones, and Alex fared much better. During the Gustafsson/Jones fight, Alex landed more, he took him down with ease, and blocked his takedowns. Cormier survived Jones, but was clearly overwhelmed by Jones’ height/reach advantage. Alex has an nearly identical build to Jones, only with far superior striking…
I believe that Gustafsson’s best chance for victory would be to drastically out-point Cormier, as I don’t believe that Cormier can be KO’ed and he’s far too savvy on the mat to be submitted by a striker. It should be a very interesting fight and it would be fantastic to see Gustaffson complete his arduous journey and have his hand raised at the end of the night. Unfortunately, I tend to believe that Cormier will prevail in this bout via decision or submission. He’s got great stamina, decent striking (particularly uppercuts), he’s fought some very dangerous fighters (in heavyweight and LHW) over the past 5 years and he’s got more championship experience. I truly hope I’m wrong…

If Gustaffson were to prevail this weekend, we’d have 4/8 white UFC Champions. If Donald Cerrone prevails in his Lightweight title bout over dos Anjos in December, we’ll have 5/8 white UFC Champions. If Johny Hendricks wins this weekend, he'll certainly be fighting Lawler, we'll have 6/8 white UFC Champions. If Andrei Arlovski were to get a Heavyweight shot in the coming months, we could have 7/8 white UFC Champions. [Fingers crossed]
