Well, it looks like Rebajlo was right. PSG didn't have a player sent off, but Barcelona were awarded two very questionable penalties, which helped them complete the largest comeback in the history of the Champions' League.

As The Philosopher correctly observed, I did not imply that Messi isn’t the best player in the world (or one of the two best players in the world…) at the moment. Messi is definitely an all-time great. In my opinion, he’s just not the “best ever”.

Comparisons of Messi with players from earlier eras are problematic because the nature of the game has radically changed in a very short time. Referees now afford attacking players a level of protection which was unimaginable even fifteen years ago. Aggressive hatchet-men who deliberately try to hurt the opposing team’s star players have been comprehensively excised from the “modern” game therefore Messi isn’t forced to endure the brutal challenges and constant intimidation of hard nuts like Chopper Harris, Tommy Smith, or Andoni Goikoetxea. The sport’s less physical nature means that players are also less likely to sustain serious injuries. This, in turn, prolongs their careers at top level.

Football’s regulations have gradually been amended to make a forward’s job much easier: goalkeepers are not permitted to handle back passes (1992); tackling from behind is prohibited (1998); and the once strictly ironclad offside rule has been softened since 1995, culminating with the adoption of the current “passive offside” interpretation in 2005.

Messi was diagnosed with growth hormone deficiency when he was ten years old and subsequently received expensive daily injections of HGH for three years between the ages of eleven and thirteen - all paid for by Barcelona. When the score was 3-1 - with PSG ahead 5-3 on aggregate and with an away goal in the bag - Javier Mascherano fouled Angel Di Maria from behind in the box just as the striker was about to shoot one-on-one with the goalkeeper. The verdict: no penalty.

Luis Suarez’s highly theatrical injury-time dive earned Barcelona a penalty, which earlier diver Neymar converted to make the score 5-1.

Cristiano Ronaldo is White. Multiculturalists delight in citing his Cape Verdean great-grandmother as some kind of “proof” that Ronaldo possesses distant Negro ancestry (which, of course, naturally accounts for his skill and flamboyance… ). So yet another boringly predictable season has drawn to a close. Real Madrid retained the title, winning their twelfth European Cup / Champions League - which is also their third in four years. Back in August I went through the annual ritual of confirming my ever-dwindling interest in the Champions League during a conversation with my best mate about the upcoming tournament. My friend still gets excited about football (probably because he bets - and loses - frighteningly large sums of money on it…) but I simply proffered my standard opinion that there’s no point in paying more than cursory attention to a “competition” in which 78 teams take part yet the same small handful of big-money and big-influence clubs reach the quarterfinals with grinding inevitability, year in, year out.

I expanded by blandly stating that come March, the final eight would almost surely consist of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Juventus, Bayern Munich, and Borussia Dortmund with the remaining two spots being filled by clubs from England, France, or Spain. I can assure everyone that I’m not a seer but when March rolled around the quarterfinalists just happened to be (insert drum roll…) Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Juventus, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, AS Monaco, and Leicester City. The presence of the latter club provided the only “revelation” - and it’s quite safe to say that Leicester shall in all probability never make another Champions League appearance in any of our lifetimes, let alone reach the quarterfinals.

While we’re at it, we might as well mention the Europa League, a competition which - given its structure - should surely be sponsored by parachute manufacturers and recycling companies. The Europa League’s sole serious point of interest is provided by the winner being granted a place in the following season’s Champions League tournament. In that context, Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Ajax Amsterdam was worth a potential fortune to the English club, who finished a miserable sixth in the Premier League. The final provided another, er, “showcase” of White players…

Manchester United started six Whites (with not a single Englishman among them…), four blacks, and one Arab.
