Ironically, this may hurt the anti-caste cause. Dungy doesn't seem to buy into the caste system as much as other coaches and the Colts were always going to be in the playoffs with Dungy.

I was wondering if people think he is a hall of fame coach, if he never comes back. He got a Super Bowl, never misses the playoffs and turned around the Tampa Bay franchise of all teams. However, there are only 21 NFL head coaches in the Hall of Fame (minus Madden who I think got there because of his broadcasting career). It's a pretty damn elite group.

He'll get in because he's black, but does he deserve it?

He'll make the Hall of Fame. His teams were always good, he won a Super Bowl, he's black, and he's a "saint." A no brainer.

Dungy was a good system coach in Indy. GM Bill Polian and the ownership set the template, Tom Moore is a great offensive coordinator who has been there a long time, and of course the QB has been Peyton Manning the whole time, the best quarterback in NFL history. Dungy was an excellent fit and will go to the Hall.

One thing I noticed is that neither the DWFs nor the media ever complained about Dungy's annual should I retire or not ritual, in sharp contrast to the way Brett Favre has (justly for the most part) been skewered for doing the same thing.

The only thing about Dungy retiring is his replacement, Caldwell I think, will likely be a huge caste supporter. I don't know much about him though.

Yeah, to Dungy's credit his Colts teams were moderately white-friendly. I respected him because he let Manning be the general out there and didn't really infringe on him at all. All we can hope is that this Caldwell fellow is a Dungy "disciple" as far as allowing a fre whites to play.

I will give him credit for turning around maybe the worst franchise in NFL history(to that point). But he in my mind isn't a truly elite coach. He is similar to Jim Rice or Don Sutton(very good but not truly elite). If he were what he looks like (Arab maybe Southern Euro)the hall might make him wait forever, but since he will be the first real Black head coach he will get in to the hall fairly quickly.
