Morrison says he doesn't have the HIV virus now and never did, that the previous diagnosis was the result of a faulty test. He may or may not be lying, but I'm no believer in the infallibility of medicine and medical testsany more than I'm a believer in the infallibility of accuracywhen it comes tothe corporate media.

Dan Patrick interviewed him earlier this afternoon. I missed it, but all Dan and his callers were talking about afterward was how "angry" Morrison sounded and how that doesn't jibe with being a professed Christian. Apparently Christians aren't supposed to ever be angry, just meek, content sheep to be sheared.

Thanks for the info on Morrison, I didn't know his HIV status was in dispute. I also hate the misguided notion that all christians are suppossed to always behave in some type of milquetoast way and never have the right to be angry or ever take any type of stand. There were sure alot of Christians back in the 1770's who took a stand against British tyranny and that's why we are free today. Unfortunately, a large segment of the christian community has bought into this "never make a judgement" and "never take a stand" mentality. Sometimes we are so heavenly minded that we are little earthly good.

Especially when it comes to the crimes committed by the nation of Israel, and their vast influence on U.S. politics and foreign policy.

There are alot more crimes committed against Israel by her terrorist neighbors(true) than those committed by Israel, but I know thats a unpopular opinion around here.Edited by: guest301

Yes the severity is true. But Israel has a reputation as upstanding member of the international community. When in reality they are a rogue state similar to the old apartheid regime in South Africa.

Now, now, don't try to change the topic and make our exchange about who's committing what crimes.

I was merely agreeing with your assertion that many Christians "have bought into this "never make a judgement" and "never take a stand" mentality." I merely pointed out that they are especially so when it comes to forming an objective opinion about the nation of Israel.

Whether the Palestinians or anyone else 'do it, too' does not negate the point that the majority of the Christian 'commnity', as you say, is beholden to the nation of Israel, right or wrong, lock stock and barrel.

Yes I have a friend that is born again and he defends Israel to the hilt. Yet I told him that a quarter of all Palestinians are Christians and many of them when times are more peaceful are hunted down and killed by their own people(Palestinians who are Muslims). Sometimes I wonder if the support for Israel doesn't also stem from racism as most of the Israelis are Ashkenazi. While most Palestinians are brown skinned people.

I believe in the Holy Scriptures, God's written word and message to the human race. The most important message is the sacrifice that Jesus(a jew) made and his atonement for our sins and our need to access that forgiveness that we all need whether we acknowlege that or not. There are other truths in scripture about God's everlasting covenant with the Jewish people and the prophetic signifigance of Israel's return as a nation in 1948.I follow those truths as well despite who may be doing what to whom. I am objective about Israel and have been known to criticize then from time to time, but the truth of God's word is truly the only thing that matters in the end. The truth is a virtue and trait that's not often held in the possession of the majority, that's certainly the case around here in regards to Israel.

You know of course that all the remarks you made about God's covenant with Israel are subject to interpretation, right?

The fixation with Israel and / or the Jews and the 'everlasting covenant' is a recent (20th century) phenomenon. Throughout church history the church saw itself as a replacement of the Jews as God's 'Chosen People.' Furthermore, it is only a certain segment of the Christian church, the evangelical 'right,' that holds this belief. Most Christians in the U.S. are evangelical which is why that idea and support of Israel is so widespread. But it is definitely not Catholic or Orthodox doctrine, who between them make up the largest body of Christians in the world.

But like you said, this thread *is* (was?) about Tommy Morrison, although I can see how this discussion is somewhat relevant because he took a lot of heat on the Dan Patrick show for being an 'angry' Christian.

Yeah, Tommy Morrison has denied that he has HIV. I think I or someone else posted on it some time ago. Anyway, the Christian stereotypes are bought into about as much as Southern stereotypes. It infuriates me at times, but I have learned to just live in a way that blows the stereotypes apart. I hope Tommy does come back and make some noise in the Heavyweight division.

I just saw the ESPN interview with the Duke and he looked like hell. Yes his body is sculpted and toned but his face looks similar to a drunk or a boozer's face in his late 30's. I swear he looks like Mickey Rourke in the movie Spun. This is coming from a huge Rourke fan(of his cult classics from the 80's) and a former big Duke fan. Like I said Morrison shouldn't go near a ring except as a trainer.

Morrison stopped his opponent John Castle in the middle of the second round. Morrison dropped Castle with his old trade-mark left hook. Castle made it to his feet but the ref's count was eight and he stopped the fight.

Morrison by TKO 2nd round.

He said he'd like to fight twice in March because his timing was a bit off an that he needs to shake some rust. Will be interesting to see how his career plays out from here..

Guys I read this thread, then went to youtube and watched T.M. againts James "quick" Tillis. Good God does Tommy have a great left hook. He threw it to the body and head with great power, body lean and mechanics. In todays heavy division, Tommy could do damage at half his old self!

I saw the "outside the lines" interview on ESPN about Tommy Morrison. He looked gaunt in the face and it also looked like he had "chicken leg syndrome". He had a sculpted upper body but very skinny legs for a heavyweight. I am glad he won his fight and I would love to see him back in the top ten. I also believe he is a distant relative of John Wayne. I read that somewhere.

I read some online reports that Morrison still had his notorious gas tank issues. Also the reporter said Morrison lost the first round and was even up and looking semi- gassed in the second. I hope that this is because he was sedentary for 11 years, not because his body can't handle the stress of boxing.....

Morrison is about 6'2, 220 which makes him a very small heavyweight. Even in his prime he was on the small side (despite his big punching power). Despite being outweighed he beat Foreman, Ruddock and some others.

I don't see him hanging with any of the top heavies today.

I just saw a show on E called Boulevard of Broken Dreams that featured assorted has-beens including Tommy Morrison. They showed him training. He looks great. However, I didn't care for his comments regarding the current heavyweight division. He said looking at the current state of the division is making his mouth water. I've always been a big fan of his but think he's going to get his plow cleaned if he ever gets into the top ten.

Morrison is at best a 4 round fighter right now. He had better beef up and strengthen his legs if he is going to fight 6,8,10 and possible 12 rounds. This "state of the current heavyweight division" is getting old. Morrison was someone to watch in the early 90's but his comments make him now sound like he is full of b.s. and bad manners.

Morrison v. Foreman

Gerry Cooney. I thought Cooney could have been one of the best fighers ever. He started quickly but got thrown in against Larry Holmes too early. It was a good fight but Holmes got the best of him. I saw the Cooney/Holmes fight on a big screen at an auditorium in rural Alabama with a half white and half black crowd. It was a rough night. The only fight wasn't on the screen. He was the only good white heavyweight for nearly 20 years.

Morrison would have destroyed Cooney in under three rounds. Morrison was legit, and his left hook could take anybody out at anytime. You saw this over and over with Tommy the Duke. Cooney, however, I was never quite sold on him. I couldn't help noticing that even in his most famous win over Ken Norton, even though it was a first round KO, there really wasn't any big punch that knocked Norton down. Instead, it was cumulative. You never really saw Cooney drop guys like the Duke's boy did. Morrison was for real. Cooney? I used to be on board with that, but in my later years, especially when I went into business for myself and had to deal with real sharks out there, I've come to the conclusion that Cooney's promoters did an amazing job of it--for themselves. It looks like now, they took a guy who maybe wasn'tall thatgood, fed him a bunch of cream puffs, then jumped for that one big payday against Holmes and took the money and got the hell out of dodge before their boy could really be exposed. I think the subsequent fights that Cooney had after the Holmes fight, when he was finally fighting real guys, showed he really wasn't all that good. I'm even starting to wonder of the holmes fight went as long as it did only because Holmes started to believe the hype about Cooney. Holmes kept his distance the whole fight. But you saw what happened when Holmes finally moved in for the kill--an easy KO against a guy with no chin and no defense, just like we saw in later Cooney fights.

Cooney's handlers were smart guys. That is maybe the best job of getting the most profit out of a fighter in the 20th century. If Cooney had fought real guys before the Holmes fight, he just would have been exposed earlier and had missed out on that one enormous payday.

Morrison wasn't the best boxer, but he sure could throw some heat. I never saw him beating a Lewis or Tyson, but he was a legit top ten talent and I loved watching him.

At this point, though, if Morrison insists on getting in the ring, he should stick to four rounders and maybe he can earn a showdown with Butterbean.

I agree. I saw him on Carson Daly's show last night, and he said that he was going to be champion in 12-15 months, and that there was nobody in the division that he couldn't beat. Wow, that's quite a claim. Obviously boxing is all about hype and we shouldn't take it too seriously. And he always has a puncher's chance, thanks to that left hook. I'm not a big fan of white-on-white crime,

but part of me would like to see him in the ring with Klitschko. It would be nice to see at least one person who hates the HW division get his comeuppance.

Hey, for all you people who think that the current Heavies are worthless... well, this guy who just got knocked out thought that, too!
