Things are looking promising for Gerhart this Sunday. Best case scenario is that he'll get the start and hopefully have a solid game against Buffalo. Worst case, Peterson is still not 100%, so Gerhart will definitely get more than his usual share of carries. Hoping for the best, of course.

Here's a positive article about Gerhart, and if you read some of the comments, they are also pretty decent.

Vikings rookie RB Toby Gerhart gaining yards, trust

The girlfriend was using the car, so Toby Gerhart borrowed the keys to teammate Adrian Peterson's ride in order to make a team meeting last month.

Only one problem: Gerhart, a former Stanford star, was still on California time, not Minnesota snow time. Minutes after hitting the roads, Gerhart was stuck in the snow on a quiet road.

Rookie mistake.

"I thought I was going to miss the meeting, so I was calling a bunch of players," said Gerhart, who playfully blamed Peterson's low-rise sports car for the snow jam. "Joe Webb finally picked me up, and I made it in time."

Turns out the Vikings have no problem handing Gerhart the keys to the offense if necessary.

Gerhart slowly has earned the trust of the Vikings' coaching staff, carrying the offensive load Sunday with 22 rushes, 76 yards and his first career touchdown in a 17-13 victory at Washington after Peterson left the game with a right ankle sprain.

Peterson is questionable for Sunday's game against Buffalo at the Metrodome, which increases Gerhart's value to a team insistent on running the ball under interim coach Leslie Frazier.

Frazier confirmed on KSTP-AM 1500 that tests revealed nothing more than an ankle sprain for Peterson, but Peterson's streak of 51 games played is in jeopardy. Gerhart is expected to get extended reps in practice this week, said running backs coach Eric Bieniemy, who sounds optimistic that Peterson would return swiftly.

"He'll do everything under the sun to get back," Bieniemy said. "He's the last guy I'm worried about. He wanted to go back in the game last week."

Gerhart is used to an enhanced offensive role; the Heisman runner-up rushed for 1,871 yards and 27 touchdowns last year at Stanford.

The adjustment from California celebrity to a third-down specialist pining for snaps behind the game's best running back has been difficult at times for Gerhart.

Through the first 10 games, Gerhart touched the ball 37 times â€" 24 rushes for 86 yards and 13 catches for 139 yards. His snaps have increased steadily, but he rarely plays more than 10.

"I go from Stanford, where I was the marquee player getting 25 to 30 carries a game and the offense basically revolved around me in essence, to where I get limited playing time, whether it be third downs or whenever Adrian needs a blow," Gerhart said. "It's been a different adjustment, but it's something I knew going into it what to expect. I've got to make the most of my opportunities when I get them."

The most difficult challenge, Gerhart said, is entering the game for one play, then waiting 10 minutes from the sideline. Gerhart, like most competitors, wants to find a rhythm on the field.

He did just that Sunday, impressing teammates with consistency. Gerhart didn't have a rush longer than 6 yards, but he didn't turn the ball over and showed the ability to push for extra yardage with his 230-pound frame.

"One thing about Toby is he takes a tremendous amount of pride using his pads on people," Bieniemy said. "He's really flourished in the last month. He plays hard all the time and has tremendous hands to catch the football."

The Vikings traded up in the draft to get Gerhart after the offseason departure of Chester Taylor, who helped Minnesota convert plenty of third downs in his four seasons.

Instead of trying to match Peterson's explosiveness, Gerhart decided in training camp to make blocking and blitz pickup his priorities.

Save his two fumbles, Gerhart is pleased with his performance.

"I think it was trust more than anything," said Gerhart of his enhanced snaps in recent weeks. "My role has primarily been at this point third down, that's a passing down, a blitz down. Them having trust in me to protect Brett (Favre), not mess up, catch the ball out of the backfield, run the appropriate routes, beat man-to-man coverage. Over the course of the season I proved I can do that in practice."

Regardless of whether Peterson returns for Sunday's game, Gerhart's value is still rising from a performance and logistical standpoint.

The Vikings want to keep Peterson fresh after averaging 21 carries per game through the first 10 games, Bieniemy said.

Though Gerhart would like to become an every-down back eventually, for now he'll settle for a better NFL experience after the Vikings' circus-like season.

From a talent-rich team falling out of the playoff race to Brad Childress' firing to the Randy Moss mess, Gerhart has seen it all.

"They tell me the NFL isn't always like this," Gerhart said. "It'll get better, trust me."

"Instead of trying to match Peterson's explosiveness, Gerhart decided in training camp to make blocking and blitz pickup his priorities."

Typical white-speak. To wit, "I am a team player and will shelf my god-given talents for the rest of my life to better promote a superior black athlete."

The NFL "system" seems to be able to brainwash the Leonards, Gerhardts and Kuhns into this pattern of thought.

Toby...make your case!! You were the premiere RB in the nation! You should strive to be that yet again!

Yeah, if Toby did state this to the writer, it seems he has caught Jacob Hester disease. Or maybe it was just bigoted group think on the part of the writer. I think it is the latter.

I don't think Toby said that. It isn't in quotes. Probably just castean sludge from the writer.

Agreed. I still think Toby needs to ask for a trade at the end of season. AP still has 3 to 4 years to be the Man at Minn. I would question Toby if he would be satisfied with his current or slightly elevated role next year. Screw that, be bold and look at what Hillis is doing. Never accept second role status especially if you have talent, along the likes of Hillis.

AP is bound to continue getting injured, as he tends to fight for extra yards and BSPN highlight material. I say give it another year under the new coach, wait for a catastrophic injury to AP, and who knows?...

I'm not hoping for AP to have a catastrophic injury. Having said that, it doesn't bother me to see the guy get "nicked" up a bit with an ankle here or there as most backs do a few times in their career when it will bring more carries for one of my favourite players. Heck, AP could still sit out this week for precautionary/pain management reasons. The better Hillis does and the more playing time Gerhart gets, the more likely his role will increase in Minnesota for the rest of this year and next. Also the more likely it becomes that AP goes somewhere else when his contract is up for salary cap management reasons (if Gerhart begins to look like a stud) or either AP or Gerhart get traded. Minnesota wouldn't want two Pro Bowl backs on their roster at the same time when they could get lots of value using one as trade bait. Something tells me this will all work out for Gerhart by his third season. Until then let's just hope his PT continues to increase and his play continues to improve with added reps!

Also, as much as I'd like to see Jacob Hester get a chance, Tolbert has done pretty well so I'm not fuming over it. I do think Hester has the talent to start or at least evenly split carries for some teams in the league, but I don't think he'll ever be a "consistent Pro Bowl" tailback like Hillis, Woodhead, Gerhart and other whites could be if given enough carries.

I think Hester is the 9th most talented back from his draft year, looking back. If I recall what I wrote down a few weeks ago- I'd rank the top 10 in terms of talent as: 1. Chris Johnson 2. Peyton Hillis 3. Jamal Charles 4. Danny Woodhead 5. Darren McFadden6. Ray Rice 7. Jonathan Stewart 8. Felix Jones 9. Jacob Hester 10. BenJarvus Green-Ellis

The Leonard situation has me a bit aggravated considering that Benson is back to struggling like earlier in his career again. I think Leonard could at least match Benson's rush production this year- with the same amount of carries and Leonard is clearly the better "all purpose" RB.

Looks like Peterson will beready to goon Sunday:

Updating a previous item, Adrian Peterson (ankle) is listed as probable for the Vikings' Week 13 game against the Bills. "He did a much better job than we thought he would (in practice), so we're optimistic," said interim coach Leslie Frazier. Disregard Frazier's earlier comments about Peterson being a "game-time decision;" the probable tag means that the Vikings consider him "virtually certain" to be available for normal duties. A.P. should be ready for a full workload against the Bills.

Is he really ready, or nervous that Gerhart is going to have a great day against one of the worst teams against the run? which could possibly cut into his playing time in the future if Gerhart has the opportunity to show what he can do once he gets his confidence up. If he isn't 100 percent it is a dumb move on his part, because the injury will get worse and Gerhart will wind up playing more anyway.

Yeah, I sense some nervousness in this decision, but I guess time will tell.

I was wrong about Peterson. He ended up doing pretty well today. Then again, so did Toby Gerhart! Twould be very cool if Danny Woodhead goes over 50 or even 100 yards tomorrow night. It has been many years since 3 White backs went over 50 yards in the same week.

I wonder how the departure of Bienemy to Colorado as Offensive Coordinator will affect Toby. Bienemy was a supporter of Toby and they seemed to have a good rapport with each other.

I thought about that myself. I remember when Toby was getting hit in the knees during training camp (by whichever Williams bruva it was), Bienemy said something about it being uncalled for to the media. Also, if you look on Toby's high school Rivals page, he was recruited by Bienemy to play for UCLA.

Toby really really needs to do what Woodhead did and what Hillis did in 2008; make the most of his limited opps, get good game tape together, destroy at leastone team this year and make an impression. He took a nice step in that direction today against the Bills.

EDIT TO ADD: If you think you hated Rotoworld before...

Gerhart and Adrian Peterson essentially rotated series throughout the game with A.P. coming off an ankle injury. The rookie didn't capitalize on his increased role, mostly looking sluggish and lacking speed to reach the perimeter. Though Gerhart is willing to fight for yards after contact, the offense is noticeably slower when he's in the game ahead of Peterson. Dec. 5 - 5:52 pm etEdited by: Toby Hillis

Gerhart is looking better and better. Good amount of yards. Keep the faith with him. He's going to get his shot. I believe Peterson is going to louse himself up somehow or get hurt. Whichever comes first.

Toby Gerhart just needs to keep working hard. If the Vikings don't want to use him a lot more next year, then some other team will be happy to accomodate him.

i don't know, i am a big Toby's fan but he does look slowish and stiff at times. i hope that's just something he will get rid of when he gets enough carries and finds the rhythm.

well, he may not have enough snaps to adjust now. Vikings brought in some scrub:

Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said he's hoping new RB Lorenzo Booker can help the team out on third downs right away.

Booker last made an appearance in the NFL in 2008 and played this season in the UFL for the Hartford Colonials. He has little between-the-tackles ability, but he is a capable receiver out of the backfield and that's what the Vikings brought him in for. He figures to cut into Toby Gerhart's snaps more than Adrian Peterson's.

Why don't Best (and his 3.3ypc) and Spiller have to look over their shoulders?! Why are "they" always given the the benefit of the doubt and time to adjust? Why didn't the Lions and the Bills look into signing Booker? Why is it ALWAYS our guys?! I can't take this BS anymore, I really can't!!! There has to be a course of action we can take.

Toby Hillis being a member here is a start. and writing letters to the GMs and coaches is another. Refusing to attend NFL games or buy their products or sponsors products is another.

Perhaps writing / Tweeting white players to speak up is another. Hopefully tonight Danny Woodhead will open some DWFs who stay at home and drink beer incessantly will take notice.

I haven't seen all of Gerhart's runs this season, but during the ones I have seen the o-line isn't giving Toby any space. He's most effective when he gets through the first level and then accelerates with his speed and power, making him difficult to bring down.

Peyton Hillis is benefitting by getting a lot of his plays called where the White side of the Browns o-line blocks for him, and of course Woodhead and Kuhn have all-White lines in front of them. I think any White runner who has mostly sumos blocking for him is going to have a difficult time in the NFL. Edited by: Don Wassall
