Thomas Oosthuizen won again today, successfully defending his IBO super middleweight title.

http://www.boxingscene.com/oosthuizen-stops-sierra-eleven-retains-ibo-title--46349

His opponent, Francisco Sierra, a hard puncher and a naturally bigger man having usually fought at light heavyweight, took a lot of punishment throughout the fight and was stopped in the 11th round.

Oosthuizen is now 17-0-1, with 12 KOs.

Thanks for the update Dempsey! I haven't followed this fighter as of yet.

Not to mention George Groves who's 23 as well and who's now ranked #12 by boxrec, the super mid division is definitely ours.
But Oosthuizen is 6'3", he may move up in weight quickly. Can't wait to see him with the Dawson, Pascal and Cloud in a couple of years.

Tommy's negro opponent tried to cut him with a headbutt, as they often will do when taking a beating. From fightnews:

Oosthuizen wins in six

By Ron Jackson

Tommy Oosthuizen battered Serge Yannick to defeat in the sixth round to retain his IBO super middleweight belt at Emperors Palace, Kempton Park, on Saturday night. This was his fourth successful defence. The southpaw Oosthuizen (18-0-1, 13 KOs) produced one of his best performances since joining the professional ranks in February 2008 as he dominated from the first round against the gutsy Yannick (14-2, 7 KOs) who was born in Cameroon but fights out of Australia.

Yannick (75.80kg) was already showing signs of wear and tear as he came out for the second round with puffiness under his right eye and blood seeping from his nose.

Yannick was never in the fight as he lunged forward against his taller opponent to land with the occasional wild swinging right the head. However, the South African was never fazed as he took the glancing blows going backward.

A devastating left uppercut sent Yannick crashing to the canvas early in the sixth round. He was able to beat the count but was in no condition to continue as referee Andile Matika waved the fight off at 47 seconds into the round.

Oosthuizen (76.18kg) suffered a small cut above the right eye in the fourth round from a clash of heads but it was fairly well controlled by his corner.
The judges were Donald Balas (USA), John Coyle (England) and Arthur Ellensohn (Germany).

Some good news here.

http://www.boxingscene.com/thomas-oosthuizen-marcus-johnson-on-april-27-shobox--51150

BoxingScene.com had been advised that IBO light heavyweight champion Thomas Oosthuizen (18-0-1, 13KOs) will defend his title against hard-hitter Marcus Johnson (21-1, 15KOs) on April 27th at the Buffalo Run Casino in Oklahoma, as part of a televised tripleheader on Showtime. Oosthuizen's original opponent, Maxim Vlasov of Russia, was involved in a car accident and was forced to withdraw.

What a yapper Farhood is. He kept saying oh Johnson blocked that one. Yeah, blocked it with his face. I had to go to the mute button.

Oosthuizen showed me a lot, handspeed, combination punching, good body work. He got hit way too much though. He should work on his jab and defense, and he's good to go with the big boys real soon.

Earlier tonight, 24-year-old red-hot undefeated super middleweight contender Thomas “Tommy Gun” Oosthuizen (21-0-1, 13KO’s) retained his IBO super middleweight championship with a dominate twelve round unanimous decision over four-time world title challenger Fulgencio Zuniga (25-6-1, 22KO’s) at the Emperor’s Palace in Gauteng, South Africa.

Oosthuizen, who is promoted by Rodney Berman’s Golden Gloves and DiBella Entertainment, dominated the action throughout, seemingly having his way with the much more experienced Zuniga, winning by scores of 120-108, 119-109, 119-109. Oosthuizen is expected to return action stateside sometime in early 2013.

Purses for Sat @HBOboxing card: Golovkin $350k, Macklin 300k, Oosthuizen 30k (probably also SA TV), Gonzalez 50k, Nelson 45k, Cuello 35k

So Thomas Oosthuizen is being paid $30,000 for tomorrow's fight? That barely covers his expenses, he's coming all the way from South Africa.

Golovkin $350,000
Macklin $300,000

For their last fights on HBO:

Donaire's purse was $1,320,000
Rigondeaux's was $750,000
Bradley received $1,750,000
Rios made $1,250,000
Alvarado made $625,000

Andre Berto will be paid $1,950,000 for fighting Soto-Karass

The people who run HBO always pay smaller purses to white boxers than to black and Hispanic boxers.

Oosthuizen pulled out of January 18 HBO appearance and dropped by promoter

Barely a handful of days into the new year, Tommy Oosthuizen’s career potentially lies in tatters. The IBO super-middleweight champion has been pulled off a major international bill in Canada on January 18 and has also been shown the door by Golden Gloves. In a dramatic start to 2014, a furious Rodney Berman confirmed that he had “washed his hands” of the rebellious fighter in the wake of an apparent bicycle crash that had left him injured. Worse still, Berman received word that Oosthuizen was six kilograms above the light-heavyweight limit and hadn’t a hope of being fit to face unbeaten Eleider Alvarez on an HBO bill in less than a fortnight.
Berman blew his gasket, saying that he wasn’t prepared to tolerate Oosthuizen’s habitual nonsense. Oosthuizen’s indiscipline had been a mounting concern for Golden Gloves, not least when he ran into weight troubles in 2013 and there were reports of bad behaviour. Berman read the fighter the riot act, but it appears not to have worked with Oosthuizen again in terrible shape ahead of a key international fight.
Last year he came close to blowing things with a sub-par showing against Brandon Gonzales that left HBO, among others, unimpressed. The boxer followed that up by ballooning ahead of his fight against Ezequiel Maderna, which came close to being scrapped. The show in Canada was his chance to get back into the big time and confirm his talent on a major international tournament.
“He’s done!” said an incandescent Berman. “He’s had so many chances and blown every one. Golden Gloves is the promoter of champions, of men of credibility, good standing and dignity. Tommy has let us all down. Fighters are meant to be role models, but he’s fallen very short.”
Trainer Harold Volbrecht, who tried in vain to keep Oosthuizen on a short leash, is said to be distraught at developments. Berman admitted that he had been embarrassed by the shambles, not least because of his ties with the World Boxing Council and the Canadian promoters, who now have to scramble to sign another opponent.

Well, I don't know about the rest, but he's 6'4" and it sounds like he's growing out of the lighter weight classes.

To be kind, Thomas lacks in the judgement department. What kind of knuckle head goes out and bikes knowing he has a major fight in weeks with a world stage viewing? Dummy. Also why is 13 pounds over the 175 lbs. It seems he has the Julio Jr Chavez affliction. Young and dumb and lacking discipline.

Years ago I knew an amateur boxer who did his cardio by riding as a part time bicycle messenger. He was a cousin of a semi famous Canadian club fighter. Whenever he had tournaments coming up he took time off from working. If you ride like that you are always fit and close to weight. When I first saw this story I assumed it was a motor bike. He could be lazy or he is trying to make a weight that is unnatural to his body. These days many fighters fight a full weight classification below what they would have fought at in the 70's when fighters didn't have as good knowledge on nutrition and sadly PED's.

I assumed he was bicycling to stay in shape. Bicycling is an excellent workout, though I don't think it is as directly applicable to boxing as the usually recommended jogging or running, the latter strengthening the muscles in and around the feet more, but mixing up the two should be good.
