I heard Kenny Perry say he never works out and doesn't watch what he eats. Gee, we wouldn't have known if he hadn't spilled the beans. You certainly don't have to be an athlete to be a good golpher I suppose, but would it hurt for some of these guys to get into any kind of shape?

Perhaps some of Eldrick's appeal to the masses is that he doesn't look like a pudgy slob. All in all a good day, not because of who won, but who didn't.

Even the young white guy (Campbell) was fat. C'mon these guys make their living with their bodies. It's one thing to be a workout freak and another to stay in decent shape. I think it would be a good idea for these guys to trim down a little. Mickelson looked better, less pudgy then usual and I think that's a good thing. And Bart's right, Woods looks better then a lot of the top golfers and that contributes to his popularity.

Blah, a fat bald guy from Argentina guts out a win against the choking US white males. It's embarassing, the only satisfaction was Tiger not winning, and they let him get awful close too. Some pretty bad golf in the clutch by all players. Not real pretty.

Gee, tough crowd.  Woods bogeyed 17 and 18.  Six white men and one asian outplayed The Future President of the World. It's a very tough course but some very good scores were posted.  Only 8 winners in the history of the tournament bettered the -12 scored by Cabrera, Perry and Campbell.

I wanted Perry to win for old guys like me! Can you believe Cabrerra is only 41??? He looks 51!

Thing about golf is, it's all about hand-eye coordination, touch, and course management, which is why so few blacks play it well. 

You are correct, but a better conditioned body would vastly improve endurance and stamina. I'm convinced that many of the players are not folding from pressure. No, they are nervous and jittery from going without pizza, cheese burgers, and beer for too long a stretch.

I love Phil Mickelson but he drives me nuts. He was on fire today and was tearing up the place right? Sooner or later though, you just wait for him to take himself out of the action. So frustrating because he has all the talent in the world. Edited by: Bart

You're probably right about that. Woods is mentally tougher than any other golfer. But a lot of golfers do work out quite a bit these days and it doesn't translate into mental toughness. Jack Nicklaus was pudgy until about 1970 and was never lean but was as tough as they come mentally.

I love Phil Mickelson but he drives me nuts. He was on fire today and was tearing up the place right? Sooner or later though, you just wait for him to take himself out of the action. So frustrating because he has all the talent in the world.

Mickelson began the final round several strokes too far behind to win. He shot 67, which is a great round (plus he was paired with Woods, which put a few crimps in Tiger's "intimidation factor"). He would have had to have shot a 63 to win,which would have been a perfect round and tied the course record.Only Johnny Miller didsomething like that in the finalround of a major. ButPhil did come damn close to pulling it off, making spectacular iron shots all during the round. Didn't hit his tee shot on 12 hard enough and it went in the water, then misseda very makeable eagle putt on 15 and then a short birdie putt on 17.


Hard to believe butMickelson willbe 40 next year. His window of opportunity when it comes to majors is closing.

Maybe our US white golfers should go back to smoking to reacquire mental toughness, coolness under pressure. Remember Arnie going though a pack before nailing down a victory? Smoking helps calm the nerves, gives you something to do, makes you look unfazed, helps you face down the intimidator/demons....or issmoking forbidden on tour now?

Cabrera smoked during his U.S. Open win in '07 but quit after that. John Daly is the only golfer I can think of who still smokes. Unfortunately John has a big-time self-destructive streak.

It was nice to see Phil outplay Woods. The difference between the two was evident in the way they handled their post round interviews. Woods was somber and didn't say anything about Mickelson after the reporter brought up his name. Phil on the other hand, was his usual gracious self, and went out of his way to say nice things about Woods when given the opportunity.

I was also reminded of a thread we had a few years ago discussing how white men are routinely described as dudes, guys, fellas, etc., but blacks in the same situation are called men. Woods and Mickelson were walking towards a certain hole and the announcer informed us that they had six green jackets between them. The camera focused on Woods and he said, "That man has four." Shortly after, the camera focused on Phil and he said, " and that fellow in the black has two."

Hard to believe but Mickelson will be 40 next year.  His window of opportunity when it comes to majors is closing. 

At least he managed to win 3 majors. It could have been worse.

I've only golfed a few times, and not for a while, but I can be totally engrossed watching the last round of a tournament, especially a major. The first time I have golf a chance that guy made that crazy chip shot to beat Greg Norman in the Masters.

I really wanted Perry to win, and I'm thinking if he'd put the work in to be in better shape he might have been more able to overcome the nervousness and stress of the situation.
