South Dakota State boasts an all white coaching staff and it shows through their majority white roster. Head Coach Scott Nagy has done a great job of guiding this program up to the D1 collegiate level. 2004 marked the Jackrabbits first year playing with the big boys, eight years later and he's guided his unathletic white boys to the schools first ever NCAA tournament bid. But don't think the Jackrabbits are a one hit wonder, they're here to stay.

Next year star guard Nate Wolters(6'4) will begin his senior campaign after having a spectacular Jr year. Junior sharpshooting Guards Chad White(6'6) and Brayden Carlson(6'4) also return to give the Jackrabbits a solid backcourt. Forward Zach Horstman(6'6) is an athletic wing player who can build off a solid Freshman year. Redhead Tony Fiegen(6'7) returns as a starter at Forward and Juniors PF Marcus Heemstra(6'9) and Jordan Dykstra(6'8) add experience and depth on the bench.

Nate Wolters ready to lead Jackrabbits to Summit League title

CBS in their college basketball preview of the Summit League are predicting South Dakota St as the favorites to win the conference. The writer, Matt Norlander, is especially high on star PG Wolters, ranking him in the top 40 players in all of Division I this year. He also predicts him to be the Summit League Player of the Year. I think the article is a good read and SDST is as good a team as any to support in D1 this year.

i've written extensively about Nate Wolters in the past, but "somehow" the national media continues to ignore the superstar in South Dakota.

the SD State Jackrabbit ran wild against the "real" talents of Alabama last night in a game that wasn't decided 'til a buzzer-beater 3-pointer. unfortunately, SDSU came out on the wrong side of the 70-67 score, but that shouldn't overshadow the amazing performance by Wolters.

while being guarded by preseason All-SEC First-team guard Trevor Releford and double-teamed on EVERY possession of the game (frequently even when he didn't have the ball), Wolters scored 30 points in 40 minutes on 10-15 shooting from the floor. perhaps even more impressively, the playmaker only had 2 turnovers despite handling the ball for 40 minutes against constant full court pressure and the aforementioned double teams. his final stat line: 30 points (10-15 shooting), 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals, and 2 turnovers.

the female negro announcer (Kara Lawson) was literally tongue-tied in attempting to describe Wolter's unstoppable playmaking abilities, going so far at one point to state the following:
Wolters doesn't blow by you with explosive speed. He sets you up and waits for the defender to raise his hips, then blows by you with his size.

that's right, Wolters has "explosive size."

the Jackrabbits are going to have to find more balance, though. only junior forward Jordan Dykstra helped share the load on offense, scoring 16 points (7-12 shooting) while collecting 9 rebounds.

additionally, SDSU was bitten by the diversity bug, as their only black player single-handedly committed nearly a third of the team's turnovers, 4 in just 18 minutes, AND managed to jack up 6 shots while only making 2. ouch.

it's been 4 games since i've updated Nate Wolters' performance for the Jackrabbits. unfortunately, SDSU has yet to give him consistent help, and consequently they have struggled to separate from lesser teams on the scoreboard (they're 3-2 on the year). they've only played 5 games so far this season, and 3 have been decided by a 3-pointer in the final seconds.

as for Wolters, his all-around excellence should have already made him a household name. sadly for him, he was born with that debilitating skin condition that prevents him from having "talent" and from getting exposure on ESPN.

here are his stat lines over the last 4 games:

vs. TN State - 22 Pts, 6 Reb, 9 Ast, 2 Stl, 1 Blk
at Hofstra - 25 Pts, 10 Reb, 3 Ast, 3 Stl
vs. Marshall - 22 Pts, 6 Reb, 10 Ast, 1 Stl with only 1 turnover in 39 minutes
vs. DC - 12 Pts, 3 Reb, 6 Ast, 2 Stl with zero turnovers in 25 minutes

before SDSU's blowout win over DC, Wolters has literally carried his team on his shoulders, playing over 38 minutes in every other game this season (including all 40 minutes in two contests). fortunately, he's a phenomenally conditioned athlete. hopefully, the huge load he's carrying won't wear him down as the season progresses.

another double-double tonight for Wolters in another too-close SDSU win: 21 points (on 8-13 shooting) and 10 rebounds. he also had 7 assists to 2 turnovers in 38 minutes.

they really need some of the other guys to step up and play more consistently.

for the second time in 12 days, Chad White hit a 3-pointer with two seconds remaining to give South Dakota State a victory.

South Dakota State (5-2) trailed by four points with just over a minute remaining to a terrible North Dakota team. as good as Nate Wolters is, i don't see the Jackrabbits doing much in the postseason ... unless they improve mightily.

Wolters had 21 points, 6 assists, and 5 steals, all of which were game highs. he also had 5 rebounds, which was second on the team.

led by Wolters' 28 points, South Dakota State knocked off the #16-ranked New Mexico Lobos today, 70-65.

possibly the nation's best lead guard, Wolters' 28 was a game-high (on 9 of 15 shooting) to go along with 7 assists (also a game-high) and 4 rebounds. he did have 5 turnovers, however (which, sadly, were also a game-high).

the Jackrabbits started an all-White lineup in the matchup, and they offered Wolters a lot of help. forward Jordan Dykstra had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, guard Braydon Carlson had 10 points on just 6 shot attempts (hitting 4), 3 assists, and 5 rebounds, and fellow guard Chad White had 13 points on 3 of 7 shooting and 4 rebounds. Tony Fiegen, the other starting forward, had 7 rebounds and 6 points.

only 1 black player saw the floor for SDSU. in 8 minutes of action, he didn't score but committed 3 fouls and had 1 turnover.

Thanks for the write-up Jimmy! It made my day when I saw this score yesterday! It's the Jackrabbit's first ever win over a ranked team. SDSU won in The Pit no less, which is a very tough place to play. Hopefully, SDSU can build on this win and sweep through conference play.

coming off their big win over New Mexico, the Jackrabbits managed to find a way to lose against rival North Dakota State to open conference play, 65-62.

the Bison shot a scorching 53.5% from the floor, led by power forward Marshall Bjorklund's perfect night. Bjorklund scored 20 without missing a shot, going 8 for 8 from the floor. it would've been an even more memorable night for him, but he was a miserable 4 for 9 from the free throw line.

for the Jackrabbits, Wolters was once again the bright spot. finishing with a game-high 26 points (on 10 for 21 shooting) and ZERO turnovers in 40 minutes, Wolters carried the offensive load. unfortunately, though, he was unable to get his teammates involved, and he finished with a mere 3 assists. he added 5 rebounds.

while Wolters is a big-time talent, i don't see SDSU doing much in the postseason (if they make it, that is) unless they get their defensive issues straightened out and find some consistency from their complementary scorers.

Bittle started every game last year and put up 10ppg 4rpg and 3apg. Solid numbers he can build on going into his Senior campaign. Tall and lanky Connor Devine should be a starter as well. He's done a good job of putting on weight. Came in under 200lbs at 6'10. Now he's up to 225. Guards Keaton Moffit(6'5), Reed Tellinghuisen (6'6), and Lane Severyn (6'5) should see plenty of playing time. As should forwards Ian Thiesen (6'9) and Logan Doyle (6'8). Unfortunately this team has 2 inner city guards starting. Hopefully this doesn't taken away from the team approach this team has thrived on having.

Wolters had a cup of tea in the NBA with the Milwaukee Bucks.. Unfortunately they cut him last year and haven't heard much since from him. Could be in Europe or in D league. It's a shame I'm a fan of his. Just didn't seem like he had confidence in his play like he did in college. Could be the change of scenery rural South Dakota to Urban Milwaukee. Quite a bit darker..

That's great to see! I don't trust SDSU's new coach though; he's from Iowa State. Sure enough, he's bringing in a bunch of black juco transfers, having two of them committed for next year, in addition to a black point guard and post in the current class. Thanks to this white cuck (coach) for ruining one of the last nearly all-white teams in the country. They'll still have a lot of white players (how can you not in freaking South Dakota?) but Otzelberger will make sure this team is more caste until he leaves. Like not having a white PG anymore. He can go to hell.

I noticed that too. He's got 2 inner city guard's one from Chicago, other from Milwaukee. Also recruiting an affletic big man from beer town.. At least for the moment they're a team with some white guy's to root for as they haven't totally been phased out. Nothing like '12 squad when Nagy(now at Wright St.) Had Wolters running the show.
