Jeremy Shockey should be an absolute beast in the Saints' offense. He will give Drew Brees something the QB has not had thus far in New Orleans.

Barring injury, both will make All Pro this season.

The Saints have had some bad mojo at the tight end position for a time now. Injuries derailed the speedy and ultra talented Cam Cleeland in the short Ditka reign. Last year Eric Johnson looked tentative coming off his injury, and not much has happened in between that I can think of.

Mr. Brees and Shockey to the pro bowl sounds good to me.

MIKE DETILLIER'S FOOTBALL WORLD

Shockey, Colston give Saints passing game one-two punch

Excerpt:

...The former University Miami (Fla.) All-American has been a tremendous football player in the NFL, but he has made just as much news off the field as he has with his unique skills on the football field.

Shockey is a quality football player and amongst the best tight ends in the league.
But he also had made a host of outrageous statements to the New York press, been accused by some of being selfish, openly challenged head coaches and quarterbacks about their inability to get him the ball, had a tendency to lose focus and drop an easy catch, and due to his "get out of the way or I will run you over style of play," been nicked up by injuries every season but his rookie year.

Even with some of the negatives that followed Shockey to New Orleans, if he is healthy there was not a football player currently available today that could step into a starting role and make a bigger impact than the four-time Pro Bowler.

Shockey's presence on the field gives quarterback Drew Brees a strong second option to throw downfield, and it should also take the heavy load off of the shoulders of wide receiver Marques Colston, who saw a tremendous amount of double-team coverage last season.

Even better is that by spreading the field and forcing teams to go to more nickel-coverage schemes, it will open up the running lanes for Deuce McAllister, Reggie Bush and Pierre Thomas.

The jury is still out on just how successful a head coach Sean Payton will turn out to be in the future.

But the one thing I will give him a lot of credit for is not taking someone, especially in the veteran free agency part of the game, that would be a distraction in the locker room or cause friction amongst his teammates.

Most coaches would shy away from a player with the reputation that Shockey has for being outspoken and being a bit of a live wire.

But Payton has coached Shockey before in New York and he knows his makeup as a player, respects his dedication and passion for the sport, his ability to play through injuries and admires his skills to be a playmaker out on the football field.
If you think that Shockey is not an NFL playmaker at the highest level just put his numbers up on the board.

In the first six years of his career against tight ends that are in the Hall of Fame for their play at tight end and a future Hall of Fame performer in Kansas City's Tony Gonzalez, Shockey rates very high.

Listed below are the numbers for the seven Hall of Fame tight ends and both Gonzalez and Shockey in their first six years in the NFL.

- Kellen Winslow, San Diego Chargers -- 399 catches, 5,176 yards, 37 TDs

- Tony Gonzalez, Kansas City Chiefs -- 397 catches, 4,731 yards, 37 TDs

- Jeremy Shockey, New York Giants -- 371 catches, 4,228 yards, 27 TDs

- Ozzie Newsome, Cleveland Browns -- 351 catches, 4,569 yards, 29 TDs

- Mike Ditka, Chicago Bears --316 catches, 4,503 yards, 34 TDs

- Jackie Smith, St. Louis Cardinals -- 266 catches, 4,554 yards, 22 TDs

- John Mackey, Baltimore Colts -- 247 catches, 4,105 yards, 33 TDs

- Dave Casper, Oakland Raiders -- 227 catches, 2,995 yards, 32 TDs

- Charlie Sanders, Detroit Lions -- 208 catches, 3,084 yards, 19 Tds

Now some of those Hall of Fame tight ends played in the league when they had 14 regular season games, but even with that consideration, Shockey's gifts for posting big numbers as a receiver can't be overlooked...

Shockey had a pretty good game today, despite having missed the entire pre-season. His stats show 6 catches for 54 yards; but the stats don't reflect how clutch he was, how he fought for tough yards. Shockey will be a primary target for Brees this year.

I was listening to a morning drive-time radio show. The female co-host stated she didn't know if she would like Shockey or not. After watching the game she said she really likes Shockey. That son-of-a-gun, he kills two birds with one stone. He has an effective game assisting his team to victory and gains female admiration to boot. The Cultural Marxists are flummoxed. When a clip of Shockey's fight with a bunch of black Texans was first shown on ESPN a few nights ago, the black jock sniffer (don't know his name) went absolutely giddy. Sounding much like Howard Cosell did when talking about Jackie Roosevelt Robinson, this clown screamed with joy, "Shockey goes down!"

Anyone who has seen this clip knows that Shockey actually threw down the original afflete he was fighting, and then was jumped on by numerous others. Still, this guy couldn't keep his racial solidarity from showing, even on something as innocuous as this.

If Shockey could only stay healthy, he would really make things hard for the Caste System. He is just about the only white player in the league now that really stands up for himself.

I just watched this clip BigUnreal. About 10 of the black players teamates jumped in as soon as Shockey pushed the guy. Not one player from NO jumped in for Shockey. Had Shockey been black plenty of Saints would have jumped in.

Shockey's a stud & one of the best TEs in the league (right along with Witten & Heap). I hope he tears it up in NOLA.

Dixie, Heap has really had a tough couple of years. So i will have to respectfully disagree with you on him being one of the best in the league.

CDB15, I was referring to his entire "body of work"/career. He's a 2 time Pro-Bowler & led the Ravens in receiving 3 or 4 times. He's also battled off injuries.

Heap was used much less as a receiver last season as he did a lot more blocking because of Baltimore starting Joe Flacco as a rookie. Given how quickly Flacco continues to develop, and because the Ravens haveterrible WRsafter Derrick Mason and the underachieving/oft-injured Mark Clayton, Heap hopefully will be sent down field to catch more this year.

I think Shockey really has something to prove this season. In my mind, he's not a top 5 TE anymore. His dozens of injury problems are only numerically challenged by former Bears safety Mike Brown.

Also, his hands are godawful for a white athlete. I agree that he has a badass, in your face attitude....but he's never even eclipsed 900 yards in a season. Tom Coghlin's offensive scheme may be to blame during his time in NY (because he flourished under Jim Fassel).

Unless he steps up and has a huge season, he might be one of the precious few white athletes that is actually overatted. Give me Witten, Daniels, Scheffler, Clark, and Miller over Shockey any day....even though Shockey is probably the most athletic of the bunch.

Shockey had his 500th career catch yesterday. Not quite the milestone it used to be in this prolonged pass happy era, but still a notable accomplishment.

Interesting news, Toby Hillis. I wonder where he'll end up?

I'd like to see him have a couple more decent seasons, but you might be right jaxvid.

Shockey never lived up to his full potential because he was a wide receiver playing tight end. He was around 230 at Miami, and he was only 195 pounds at 6'5 out of high school. He went the juco route where he bulked up to play tight end, and then discovered by Miami and bulked up even more. He ran a 4.5 at the combine carrying all of the extra weight (he was around 250 his pro career) and managed to be one o the best blocking tight ends in the game. He was used more as a passing threat his first year but then they had him blocking more for the rest of his career. He still had good receiving stats, only dipping below 500 yards twice in his career (both seasons he only played 11 games) and had 600+ 5 years. This is what messed up his career, carrying too much weight and playing a more physical position because injuries are what did him in for the most part.

Shockey is no different form Greg Olsen, except that his rookie season he had a coordinator smart enough to use him as a receiving threat, he was only a few yards from having 900, and only 8 yards away from 900 in 05. He finally went to a team that uses the tight end more as a receiver and had trouble with injuries, a hernia that he played through in 08, various injuries in 09 (the toe injury was his fault, he reportedly kicked a coke machine after it jammed haha) and of course injured in 10. I feel if he had been playing his natural position he wouldve gotten injured less, but then again hes a guy that didn't know how to play without going all out. But if he were a wide receiver, he would be using his physical play against cornerbacks instead of linebackers and safetys. This happens to a alot of white players, some can handle the added weight, some can't and are more prone to injury because of it (like Brian Leonard bulking up to fullback).

I hope he lands up on a team that is willing to use him as receiving threat and he can stay healthy. The Saints may resign him at a lower contract if he doesn't get better offers.
