Great, little chance for Peyton now. I cannot believe they canned him after 7 of his running backs were injured this year, and he still almost made the playoffs!

I did not know his job was in jeopardy. Trying to figure which coaching prospects might be advantageous for Peyton. Mike Martz was let go at SF. His scheme is not compatible with using running backs as a major weapon, or so it is said. Anyway, I doubt if he gets a sniff for a head coaching position. The search for a replacement is going to be interesting.

Wow, tough news. Whatever Peyton's chances were for starting next year, you have to think they would be diminished with a new coach.

Just great! The way things have been going, the Bronco's will lure Holmgren out of retirement.

I agree, this is very bad news for Peyton. However, there is more hope than 10 or even 5 years ago. The main reason is that fans are more educated. With the internet and fantasy football many drunk white fans know that Peyton is a good back and even went out of their way to watch him. And his youtube clips show what a unique athlete he is. Even some of my white friends, because of fantasy football, were talking about how good he is.

He has generated enough buzz that I have a feeling Denver fans are going to complain if he's not given a chance. However, that chance will most likely come at fullback, of course, instead of tailback. I don't think he'll see the field much at all next year, but there is more of a chance than in the past.

Son of a gun! It almost seems the stars are aligned against the white RB. Peyton gets hurt in a freakish way when he had just proven himself with stellar play, and now one of the few coaches that would allow him a rightful chance possibly at a 1,000 yard season gets canned. This is utter BS! We can only hope a good replacement will come in!

You guys are acting like Shanahan was some kind of Caste buster. Don't forget that Shanahan had to play Hillis after five black running backs before him all were injured and even then the move was made reluctantly in spite of Hillis already having a brilliant 100 yard receiving game as a fullback. Before thatShanahan pretended the 800 pound gorilla in the tent wasn't there.

I'll always remember Shanahan as the coach of the first team to not have a single white defensive player onits roster, not even as a backup.

Yeah, but even so, Shanahan was complimentary of Hillis's play this year (said "he proved he could play tailback in this league") and has usually played white WRs noticeably more than most coaches. I think the "mad scientist" line you used Don, with how Shanahan might have likened to using Hillis next year more than most coaches could be spot on. Hillis is perfect for Denver's zone blocking scheme.

Maybe Shanahan will go to the Jets now and give Woodhead Sproles level duty.

Shanahanwas admittedly much more relatively white friendly on the offensive side of the line than the defensive side, but as far as Hillis's futureI don't have a gut feeling one way or the other. I'm usually in favor of keeping a good coach and changing the employees, but it was probably time for a shake-up in Denver. The glory days under Shanahan were a long time ago and not looking to come back any time soon.

What a crying shame that Hillis was injured trying to make one of his super-human plays. I agree with Fightingtowin that he has created enough of a following that he won't go quietly into the good night. The man is a tremendous athlete and an even better football player. If the NFL totally screws him we might just generate enough of a following to get a good class action lawsuit together.

I'm shocked he was fired because Denver doesn't have a maniacal owner who has to win ever year. Also they don't have multiple media sources fueling hysteria like in NYC. Otherwise Shanahan's act has gone stale. Really since the Elway era ended his teams haven't been the same. As for Hillis it really depends how bad an injury his hamstring is. I know in track and field that can be career ending injury. A coach that is severely biased against white backs just needs a slight excuse to say that he doesn't think he can be a feature back or even an Alstott type back. That injury if he doesn't heal properly could be the excuse....

I'm no Shanahan fan, but I doubt whoever the new coach is will care anything for Peyton.

This is very bad news. Just like you guys, I hope I'm wrong but Hillis would have had a legitimate chance with Coach Shanahan. Now who knows his chances. All we can do is hope for the best. Keep your head up Peyton. You still can go out and fight for the starting job regardless of who is coach. We need some luck on our side for a change.

Denver plans to interview Tampa Bay def. coach Raheem (Don't remember his last name).Sounds like he might be another black head coach in the NFL.

They have toperform the Rooney Ruleritual whether they are serious about him or not. It might be kind of cool to have an NFL head coach with the name Raheem.

he's 32, never even been a defensive coordinator and has no idea of offense... even if he's some sort o genius (doubtful) noon is giving a guy like this a head coaching job... it's Rooney rule at its finest.

also, remember that Tony Dungy actually let Alstott play quite a bit as a runningback, so maybe having a black coach in Denver wouldn't be that bad. who knows.

Well at least Peyton got the support of guys like Marshall, that should help a little. It's also a good occasion of loosing weight and impress the new head coach with his RB skill right from the start of mini-camp

A black coach might be good thing depending on how open minded he is. A black coach wont be called racist for having white players at typical "nonwhite" positions. Either way i feel pretty good about peyton getting a legitimate shot now after showing what he can do. I think he should stay at his weight right now personally, he can be the broncos version of brandon jacobs. The giants have shown what can be done with tailbacks that are the size of linebackers

The difference is that no one trys to make Jacobs a fullback or H-back or tight end. Hillis has enough stereotyping to overcome as it is, at 250 pounds it's even tougher. The Broncos still have Torain and Aldridge and others as tailbacks, plus whoever they may draft. The inclination of many will be to try and fit Hillis in as an active fullback rather than a running back. That's the main reason he should lose weight, not to mention it will increase his speed and shiftiness while losing little power.

I think if he does decide to lose weight, it shouldnt be too much, maybe 5 to 10 and try to become leaner (thats if he can anymore, with the way hes able to move i cant imagine there is alot of fat on his body). Anymore weight than that and I feel he would be cutting too much into his strength. Personally i believe his power is the thing that will make him stand out from the rest of the backs.

Of course this is just my opinion, if peyton does decide to cut more weight than that to become a more typical tailback, then more power to him.

Hillis at 230 or 235 would still be a very imposing power back. But whatever his weight the only thing that counts is that he gets an opportunity to be a featured back, because any black with his athleticism and ability would have been a first round draft pick as a tailback, as Jimmy Chitwood wrote about so well last August.

They fired former Patriot OC Josh McDaniels, which is bad news, Evans completly disapeared since he was OC

he did use Wes Welker a lot though, plus Evans didn't do what Peyton did for Denver, although he had a few very good games. we will see soon enough i guess. McDaniels does like a comitee approach.
