Sergey Kovalev

Kovalev/Alvarez had a rematch clause. If Sergey wants it, he can have a return with Alvarez.

Based on the kind of KO Kovalev suffered I say 60 / 40 he takes it. That kind of KO really causes a fighter's punch resistance to be lowered. Obviously, a dangerous fight for him to take.
 
I don't think there is any reason for Kovalev to fight on. He made history and was an excellent fighter for many years. His loss to Alvarez is his only true loss in my, and many others, opinion. Alvarez doesn't bring anything amazing to the table and his tenure at the top likely won't be a long one. I think this fight was less about Alvarez being that good, and more about Kovalev just not being as game as he used to be. I suppose only the fighter truly knows if the fight is still in them or not. I just don't want to see Kovalev become a gate keeper type who starts getting knocked out regularly.

after thinking about this for a couple of days I agree with the Hock, F it, go for the rematch. If his corner sees that he does not have it anymore, throw in the towel. The plus its a payday and his last fight or he wins and his career continues.

Kovalev exercising the rematch clause. This fight will obviously determine if Kovalev has anything left as a world-class/marquee fighter.
 
This is a do or die fight for Sergey. He can certainly win this fight but I worry he may get knocked out. May as well retire if he loses this one.
 
Arguello-Pryor, Danny Lopez-Sanchez. Both lost their rematches by knockout.

But they made another pile of cash and didn't have to wonder what if the rest of their lives.

  1. The first Ward fight ruined Kovalev. Even the most hardcore black racists like Mayweather, Hopkins, and Jones Jr admitted Kovalev won that fight. Kovalev knew he won it to. After that he was just extremely angry. When Kovalev is in this angry state he does not fight well. He uses too much energy and tires. He needs to get back to the pre-Ward level.

WA 33, Kovalev biggest mistake was not having a majority say in judges for the 1st fight. Somehow his management failed him in this. He should've had the 1st fight in Russia and picked who he wanted as judges. Maybe he was overconfident and thought Ward would be a pushover. Now his career is on the brink.
 
This could be an omen as Sergey has hired Buddy McGirt to work his corner and good old Buddy has been running his training camp.

As this site has noticed Buddy is on a losing streak that rivals Alabama's SEC conference championship run. Kovalev is still a very good boxer, definitely better than Alvarez. The question will be his chin. He doesn't seem to be able to hurt guys as much anymore either. I think he can score a later round TKO as long as he fights smart. Alvarez was noticeably wearing down in the first fight when he landed the upset punch.
 
Fading age 40 model Jamie Frontz, who is not really attractive, is accusing Kovalev of assault and suing him for $8 million.

Obviously, this is a do or die fight for Sergey. And this could have been all avoided if he had fought in Russia for the 1st Ward fight. He would have won, and his problems in the ring would not have happened, culminating in getting KO'd last August by Alvarez. The 2nd half of tonight's fight will indicate if Sergey still has the goods to finish a fighter or just finish the fight with his arm raised.
 
Ward hurt him and Alvarez KOd him. Neither a big puncher. Was Sergey a little chinny all along? Now that he's older he's going to be hit more often.

I still like his chances though.
