For those of you that have boxed, or at least sparred for some time, you'll know what I mean when I say it is not so much of a challenge to last against a much better opponent. I don't doubt that Ward can go 12 rounds if he simply focuses on defense. However, while US judges will favor Ward, he can't win with defense; he'll also have to hit to win. That is where Kovalev's shots will get in -and Ward can't take Kovalev's shots.
Jackson, Kovalev's trainer, has said he has spotted 3 "major faults" in Ward's game. Anyone spot them? I know of 3 but I won't put them on this page. Private message me if you want to chat about it.
I hope you are right, Ambrose. This fight worries me more than the Hopkins fight as Ward is much younger and fresher than Hopkins was. Kovalev didn't look his best against Chilemba and I hope that was just an off night.
The bookies have the negro a very slight favorite. I have Kovalev a 5 - 1 favorite.
And that Kovalev will not be suffering from a two day drinking binge and hangover. The only hope for Ward is to confuse Kovalev similar to Hopkins versus Pavlik. The problem for Ward is Kovalev is a better boxer who probably has better punching power too. Ward at some point in the middle rounds might be in survival mode.
Kovalev needs to stay on the outside, pump his jab and move around. Then he wins 100 percent. Wards only chance is if he makes it an inside fight but even then I think Kovalev is just too strong for him. Ward won't be able to pull the same crap he did with Froch and Kessler.
The good thing about this is that it will make the Las Vegas referee's fight fixing job harder. Hatton needed to stay inside against Mayweather so the crooked ref, Cortez, simply dived in the moment they got close - but this is the opposite case so K stays on the outside, what is the LV referee going to do except maybe deduct points from him for not fighting if Ward backpedals a lot.
