A transfer year might do Sam McGuffie some good. He needs to be a little bigger to withstand the punishment if he wants to carry the load as a feature back, IMO.

I think Van Slyke means his weight. If he is talking height; Sam is "at least" average height for a Division IA RB. But Sam is 188lbs at 5'11.5" and he needs to add about 10 lbs of muscle to his frame. If he enters NFL draft day at say: 6 foot 190lbs, that is definiteley 10 lbs or more too light for that height for the NFL. You need a bit more bulk to handle the hits and push the pile in the NFL.

I do agree though jaxvid that Sam has looked pretty darn good so far this year in a very bad situation and has been unfairly treated by the coach and fans. Sam has just barely a big enough frame for the Big Ten IMO, but for the NFL will have to add 10 lbs. Transfering out of coal black Michigan could definitely be an option. RR is a caste whore!

Noel Devine is 3rd in rushing in the Big East conference.
Noel Devine weighs 170lbs.
Michael Smith is 2nd in rushing in the SEC.
Michael Smith weighs 173lbs.
Jacquizz Rogers leads the Pac10 in rushing.
Jacquizz Rogers weighs 180lbs.
I will never again listen to anyone who argues about weight requirements for college football tailbacks.

THANK YOU! Riddlewire This is exactly what I meant, no one ever says some black RB is too small or needs to put on weight, it's always a white RB that has to fit some kind of weight profile. "Not big enough for the Big 10? Ha that's a laugh, what is there a weight requrement for the Big 10? Michael Shaw 6'0 185 lbs. does he need to put on weight to play in the Big 10?

Sam McGuffie

It seems like the rumors have taken a turn for the worse. I had earlier reported that McGuffie was staying, and it seems like his mind has changed. After confirming with three different sources it seems that Sam McGuffie has requested, and is leaning towards transferring from The University of Michigan. This is not final or official, as I am assuming the coaches will talk to him, have him go home for break and think about it. Often times kids will think about it and change their mind. My sources have told me that the cold weather factored in, he requested to move to slot receiver, and had some sort of problem getting along with other teammates. As I said, we will not know for sure if he officially is gone until after the season, but as for now he has told Fred Jackson, and the coaches that he would like to transfer. We will keep you updated on when we know if he decides to stay or go.

-Tom VanHaaren

Looks like his season is over, he's gone. there is something wrong there, why would he wants to switch positions? He's A&M bound in my mind, it's the closest to his home. Edited by: Gi-15

I know what it is like to want to be close to home, if in fact that is something that is on Sam's mind. I just hope he gets to start somewhere next year. I don't want to see him waste any time. He needs to make the most of his college eligibility. Riddlewire, thanks for the small black RB info. Facts are inconvenient sometimes but they must be told regardless.

At least a few have said that Reggie Bush is too small to be an every down back in the NFL recently and he is 6 foot 197 lbs. Joe McKnight was called a change of pace guy by Pete Carroll and said to not be able to handle every down use and he is 6 foot 188lbs. I do believe that Sam is big enough at 188lbs for the Big Ten, but would do good to add 10 lbs if he makes it the NFL.

Noel Divine might be 170-175lbs. but he is only 5'8 so he can be sturdier at a lighter weight. Noel will still be asked to add weight for the NFL. The main problem I see with white RB discrimination is on their height. If a white RB is under 5'10 then he is too short, if he is 5'11 or taller and has a thick enough frame they bulk them up to play FB. Sam's frame probably couldn't go much past 200 lbs. at 6 foot, but if he can get to near 200 lbs, it would be better for him for NFL scouting purposes, that's all I'm saying; not that he can't play in the Big Ten at his weight.

Getting back to the issue at hand. I wonder if the hoard of black RBs were harassing Sam because he was taking away their playing time and chance at the big leagues. Maybe Sam was too easy going and requested a position switch for this reason. He had originally stated out of h.s that he was most comfortable at RB. If Sam wants to transfer he should act as soon as possible so he doesn't lose time!

McGuffie expects to play; Threet, Schilling in doubt

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - Michigan tackle Stephen Schilling is questionable for Saturday game against No. 10 Ohio State because of a sprained knee.
<DIV ="in_info__btm">

Coach Rich Rodriguez said Wednesday that running back Sam McGuffie is expected to play after attending a funeral, and quarterback Steven Threet has practiced with shoulder injury and is being evaluated as a backup possibility behind Nick Sheridan.

Receiver Zion Babb has been kicked off the team for violating team rules and defensive tackle Jason Kates has chose to leave the team, Rodriguez said. Both played minor roles.

The 10th-ranked Buckeyes are 20 1/2-point favorites, the largest spread in the rivalry, against the Wolverines, who have lost a school-record eight games.

"There's not a lot I can say here. But, think about the last time Fred Jackson ever called out a running back in public, and what that means. How he feels."

that was on the forum Gi-15 listed, does anybody know what he said in calling out sam mcguffie?

it wouldn't let me edit the other post for some reason, but i think this is it
(Michigan running backs coach Fred Jackson shared something very interesting and worrying about Sam McGuffie following the Northwestern game on Saturday.

"Sam came [to me] right before the game and decided he was too banged up to go," said running backs coach Fred Jackson. "He's got some injuries. He's a freshman and he has to be able to fight through them and go. I thought he was ready to go. He practiced every day. I was shocked."

I'm not going to throw McGuffie under the bus or question his toughness since I don't know what could have been wrong with him. I will say, however, that it is never good to have a player do something like that. I don't know what the problem was, but this is certainly a worry going forward. Couple this with the rumors that McGuffie may transfer and he is certainly going to be a player to keep an eye on after the season simply to see what his future is. )

i think the blacks may be harrassing him for taking playing time away, theres not many other scenarios that would explain it, he practiced all week long and tells coach hes too banged up to play? then he wants to switch to slot receiver and is thinking about transfering? sounds to fishy

Sam needs to stay at running back period! Whether it's at Michigan or somewhere in Texas, stay at your position. He has to be a starter as well at least by his sophmore season. The only way he should share time is if it is 50% at worst split of carries.

I personally hope he stays with the Wolverines. He needs to get tough and not take sh** from the black teammates. He has to get used to it as the NFL will be even worse. Mental toughness along with physical toughness will take him to the next level. He is as good or better than any running back in the Big Ten already and he hasn't even scratched the surface of his abilities. The transter would suck because he would have to skip a year. Keep your name in the spotlite Sam. A few guys will be gone next year and you will really shine once Michigan has a better football team. Go McGuffiie!

Who knows what happened with the Jackson story or with Sam. I just want to see the kid on the field and doing great things. I hope he gets a lot of PT this week. He needs to re-insert himself into the consciousness of college football fans and having a good game Saturday would do that. You don't want to be a white RB who becomes invisible on a team becauseyour fatewill bepretty much sealed.

I'd like to see Sam McGuffie have a big game for the reasons Col. Reb states above, and because it would do something for the fight against the Caste System for him to be the leading rusher for Michigan in 2008, regardless of where he is in 2009.

Ok, lets be real!. We have pinned our hope for a great white running back on Mcguffie. Yes I followed him in H.S. However he might not be what we expect from him. Thus we have to wait another 20 yrs for the next white hope. If he is suffering from a mental problem, let him heal and find himself. That is more important to me than running for 100 yd against OSU. I know we dont have many white boy's we can root for, accept reality.

I know better than to pin my hopes on any one player. I do not believe that any one player is going to be able to dismantle the Caste System. I want Sam do well at football, while at the same time I want him to do whatever is best for him, whether that means running wild at Michigan or going home to Texas to get his health back.

Tippycat is as negative as they come. How about Jake Sharp, Toby Gerhart and many others? Gerhart and Sharp will both go for over 1000 yards this season. Gerhart already has and so has Mooney. In fact Mooney is in the top 10 rushers in the whole country. There are more and more white running backs coming up all the time. Being negative is wasted energy. These white men are making a huge dent in the Caste System and this will continue. It is notjustone white guy every 20 years thing like you say. We just had Brian Leonard and Jacob Hester last year and they are both in the NFL. Eventually some of these guys are going to become stars on Sunday. I belive that it will happen! Do you tippycat? The reason McGuffie gets so much attention is that he has L.Tomlinson type potential. He is amazing. He broke almost every record at the all star camps for the best high schoolers from around the US. He broke records that even guys like Reggie Bush, LT, and A.Peterson couldn't even acheive in the drills. Sam has that take it to the house type ability on any play. That is why he gets so much attention!

I agree with what you're saying, but I think Brandon Wegher and maybe Jake Sharp too have that same ability! There are 3 white guys to watch right now with a NFL Pro-Bowl type game-breaking skill-set!

Toby Gerhart is like a faster version of Brandon Jacobs/ Mike Alstott, although they say Jacobs has cut down his 40 time through speed training so Brandon Jacobs may now = Toby Gerhart.

i don't get it. you'd think this kid would be having the time of his life, playing in the big house, getting carries, being on tv. i guess he's too young to get over the homesick thing. i can sort of understand that. its easy to forget he's still a teenager. now i hope he has a wise person giving him advice. he needs to transfer to a place where they need RBs or a team where most of the backs are upperclassmen and will probably gone by the time Sam is eligible to play. i believe he'll have to sit out next year if he transfers to another FBS 1 school.

i say transfer to North Texas and start every minute of every game. i know he could do better but at this point he needs to worry about playing time. plus im a SLC fan.

forget about north texas, 1 they have micah mosley, even though he is hurt, 2 they never handoff the ball to the RB, and 3 they are the worst 1-A program.

Is McGuffie healthy / active today? Haven't seen him on the field yet, and I was wondering whether or not it was because Rodriguez hates him or if he still has personal issues to deal with.
