well, Mike Doss has signed with Vikings and hopefully that means starting spot for Matt Giordano.

also just read that on draft daddy:

"**
Chicago Bears return specialist Devin Hester scored a 100 in the speed category for Madden Football.

DD.comment: When we saw this story, we quickly thought about Colts safety Matt Giordano, who almost tracked Hester down from from waaay behind in the Super Bowl and nearly prevented a touchdown. Will be fascinating to see what kind of speed the Madden people give Matt, or is there one standard speed for safeties labeled as "overacheivers" by the mainstream media?"

great comment by DD, as always!

I've always suspected as much, it seems they've been voicing their disgust a lot more lately.

Some video game websites like IGN.com will post all the players' ratings in the next few weeks or so before the game hits shelves. They do it every year. I'll keep an eye out for it and post the link when I see it so we can all have a good laugh about white athletes with 42" verticals with JUMP ratings of 60 (Scott Fujita).

Safeties/defensive backs update throughout the league:

John Wendling, SS Bills: second string, lock to make a roster, possibly will see some PT this season

Jim Leonhard, FS Bills: second string, lock to make a team
Jon Corto, FS Bills: fourth string, not likely to make a team

Cam Worrell, SS Dolphins: backup, will make a team

Eric Smith, FS Jets: backup, lock to make a team

Ray Ventrone, S/KR Jets: longshot to make a team, added value of kick returner

Ethan Kilmer, S/CB Bengals: will probably be tea's nickel/dime back, lock to make a team

John Busing, SS Bengals: this talented player is carrying an undisclosed injury ad might be placed on PUP or released altogether...

Justin Sandy, S Browns: unlikely to make a roster, last year's PS

Mike Lorello, SS Steelers: one of the 5 safeties on the roster, some chances on making a team

Donnie Nickey SS Titans: probably will make a team, but no playing time other than on STs

Nick Sorensen, FS Jaguars: with a release of Darius, he's bound to see some PT as team's top safety backup

Kevin McCadam S Jaguars: ST, story of his life...

Matt Giordano, FS Colts: team's top DB backup and best ST player. solid chance of playing more after flashes of brilliance last season

Chris Laskowski SS Colts: unclear status, does have a shot at backup position

Brannon Condren CB/S Colts: this athletic player might be backing up both corner and safety position

John Lynch FS Broncos: no introduction necessary. another starting year for a legend

Jon McGraw FS Chiefs: backup at safety, hopefully will get enough PT to shine, don't hold your breath

Stuart Schweigert FS Raiders: one of the best players on Raiders D

Steve Gregory CB Chargers: 5th corner on the team, probably will make a team

Eric Weddle S Chargers: i am sure they will find a plethora of uses for Eric as soon as possible

Dustin Fox CB Eagles: number 5 corner on the roster, 50% chances on making a team, let alone playing

Sean Considine SS Eagles: after a great 2006 season is looking to consolidate his starting position, has tools to be a star

Reed Doughty SS Redskins: backup strong safety

Adam Archuleta SS Bears: a freak of an athlete figures to start for Bears, making their defense even better

Andrew Shanle S Bears: Scott's little brother has a chance of making a team

Jay Staggs S Bears: likely to be cut before training camp

Nick Turnbull FS/CB Falcons: he might get on practice squad

Kevin Kaesviharn SS/FS Saints: hopefully team is smart enough to let him start automatically upgrading their defense; versatility is his upside

Steve Gleason SS Saints: resident ST demon, backup

Sabby Piscitelli SS Bucs: figures to take over from mediocre Phillips halfway through the season at the latest. could be the next white DB star

Aaron Francisco FS Cardinals: top safety backup on a team

Jake Patten S 49ers: slim chances of making a final cut

Todd Johnson SS Rams: a backup at safety poition will battle for more PT

Brian Russell SS Seahawks: at the moment he is projected to back Boulware up, i wouldn't be surprised to see him on the field a lot. if he's not Seahawks are idiots

Nice list, backrow. There's a fair number of white safeties, but the position has really stagnated as far as white starters. There's no questionthat alot of these guyscould be quality starters. Weddle and Piscatelli should be starting soon enough but it's a crapshoot withguys likeRussell, Kaesviharn and others,as when it comes to starters safety is stilla very strongCaste position.

I was reading again the other day about the "electric" Devin Hester and his "blinding speed." Let's not forget how Matt Giordano made up an amazing amount of ground on Hester in the Super Bowl during Hester's long kickoff return. Why isn't Giordano considered potential starting material? Not smart enough?

Giordano not only caught up to Hester from behind after having to run all
the way across the field, he also had to run down the field on the kickoff. He
probably ran 150 yards on that play.

thanks Don. and, yes, Giordano should be starting in this league, either at safety or at corner, no doubt. he's a complete package and extremely athletic, too. i hope that either Colts will see it or once his contract is up he will move on to be a starter somewhere.

speaking of safeties that don't get a fair look, i wanted to mention a guy who few of you may know about... his name is Jeremy Unertl. he played at tiny Wisconsin La-Crosse University, but he is an amazing physical specimen who rapidly turned into a tremendous football player. although he only received the most cursory of glances by the NFL...

unertlmug.jpg

Jeremy began his post-collegiate career as an undrafted and virtually unwanted rookie free agent with the Green Bay Packers, but they were unsure what to do with this "safety" whose measurables and cover skills were so taboo as to be completely shunned. it's a miracle that he even got a shot, because with measurables like these, how could he possibly contribute to a "real" team?

Unertl, 6 feet 1 1/2 inches and 210 pounds, had more than just prototypical size. He also ran sub-4.4 40-yard dashes for scouts in spring 2002, vertical jumped 41 inches and went over 11 feet in the broad jump.

By comparison, Darren Sharper was 6-1 1/2 and 204, ran in the 4.5s, had a vertical jump of 39 and a broad jump of 10-4 in 1997 when the Packers made him their second-round draft choice.

so they cut him after their summer mini-camps and even before their training camp started.they wouldn't want that kind of specimen on the field! how embarrassing!

undeterred, he signed back on with Green Bay on January 1 the following year and went to NFL Europe.

unertlNFLE.jpg

as a five-game starter at safety and six-game starter at cornerback he played an integral role in the Frankfurt Galaxy's drive to the championship.

Unertl's defensive coordinator overseas, Bob Valesente, had been Sharper's position coach for two seasons in Green Bay. Unertl reminded Valesente of the young Sharper.

"He told me, 'You have so many of the same abilities that Sharper had,'" Unertl said. "I just feel my potential is so great because I haven't learned much yet. You just hope that someone takes a liking to you and works with you."

Unertl has been an impact player on Frankfurt's defense, helping the top-ranked unit surrender just 182 points this season, fewest in NFL Europe. He finished tied for the league lead with four interceptions, totaled 29 tackles, nine passes defensed and one forced fumble.

Unertl also improved his game on special teams, which will be a major help when he returns to Green Bay to compete for a roster spot.

of course the Packers were thrilled by their phenomenally gifted and raw cornerback who still had so much upside.
unertl.jpg

but they wanted him to put on weight to be more physical against the run as a strong safety. say what?

they cut him. again.

now, Unertl is one of the most dominant defenseive specialists in the Arena League, where he is perenially among the league leaders in interceptions and passes defensed.

just imagine how good he might be if he had some talent...

Came from Wisconsin-Lacrosse? I think that is the same place Bill Schroeder played at. It must be where great white athletes in Wisconsin go to since they can't get 1-A scholorships in-state since the University of Wisconsin is more comfortable importing ghetto blacks from around the country to their quiet campus.

Must also be a school the Packers go to get their white "mascots".
