Very sad news. He was an all-time great without question, and also quite smart, just a winner on and off the field his whole life. Hadn't heard anything about him for quite some time so this is a big shock. Another superstar athlete from my boyhood now gone. RIP

It was assumed he wasn’t doing very well when he wasn’t able to attend the 50th anniversary of the 69 Miracle Mets last season. Apparently he suffered from dementia and Lyme’s disease.

Growing up in Queens during the 50s and 60s, naturally my father was a huge Tom Seaver fan. He’s told me many stories over the years of how good he was. His 10 year run on the Mets from 67 to 77 was as good as any in the modern era. His trade to the Reds was a travesty that highlights the ineptitude and financial frugality that is associated with various owners and management throughout Mets history. Despite spending many years in Cincinnati and a few in Chicago, he’s still beloved by all Mets fans. His 10 inning complete game win in the 69 WS is the stuff of legends.

As for myself, I recall him broadcasting games locally during my childhood.

I remember the 1981 strike shortened season. Tom Seaver was on the Reds and went 14-2. The Reds had the best overall record in the NL East, but did not make the playoffs. They had a weird two-half season and only the winner of each half made the playoffs. To make it worse, Seaver did not win the NL Cy Young award, but lost to Fernando Valenzuela, who was something like 13-9 that year. Anyway, i didn’t fact check, but that’s my recollection from an age 11 baseball fan.
 
Sorry to see Tom Terrific pass. But God, I hated those Mets teams he was on. They were such crappy teams but always seemed to pull it out. Just when the Yankees went to hell and NY baseball wasn’t a factor along came those guys.

It killed me how they ran a good Cubs team down in’69. Ernie Banks always seemed like a good guy and that was his one chance at a World Series.
 
Tom Terrific was among my first baseball heroes. He was probably the most dominant pitcher in his prime years of 69 to 77' and was a workhorse who was probably the best National League strikeout artist during this time period.

I heard he had dementia and might have died from Covid, I am assuming he was in nursing home when he got this disease. My condolences to the Seaver family.

Tom Seaver was the greatest pitcher of his era. Trading him to Cincinnati was a big mistake. Seaver had a longer time at his peak than most pitchers.

Tom Seaver last played for the Mets in 1977 and is considered the greatest New York Met of all time.

I have to take this opportunity to fact check the great sport historian. He’s rarely wrong about a sports fact so I’ve got to do it!

Tom Seaver was traded back to the Mets and pitched for them in 1983. It only lasted one year as the Mets gambled and left him unprotected in a “free-agent compensation draft”. They thought he was too old and expensive for someone else to want. The White Sox claimed him. This blunder cost the Mets Seaver’s 300th win, which he got at Yankee Stadium as a Sox. In 1987, Seaver had his 3rd stint with the Mets. But as the story goes, after giving up a preseason homerun to a backup catcher, Tom Seaver decided it was time to hang em up and retired a Met.

Thanks for the correction. The Mets traded Tom Seaver in 1977 when he was still in the prime of his career.

I was a teen when Tom Seaver joined my former love the Chicago White Sox. I remember attending a game in which Seaver started the last inning of a 25 inning game to start a double header, getting the win; then Seaver started game 2 and got the win in game 2 as well.

I still am grateful I was able to watch Tom Seaver and Carlton Fisk with the White Sox.

It is embarrassing what has become of this once proud organization. I recently threw out about a dozen White Sox jerseys and hats I used to cherish. They really are the Black Sox now.

Cripes! 25 innings you'll always remember that. Awesome that you were able to witness Seaver in person.

As for The Black Sox and their Dominican dominated team, their team demographics match where they play... Although it's Black Dominicans rather than American Blacks.
 
I remember Seaver getting his 300th win for the White Sox, but nobody pictures him as a White Sox player, in 86' he was on the disabled list as a Bosox player when they had their meltdown against his old team. I forgot that, but this is what I remember the most about the futility of being a White Sox fan.....
