RIP Bobby "The Brain" Heenan

Pro wrestling legend Bobby "The Brain" Heenan lost his battle with cancer on Sunday. Know best as a "heel" manager in the WWF, he also wrestled (at times) earlier in his career. Known for his lightning quick wit, Heenan was a "heat machine" who helped 'get over' the many wrestlers he managed. He is arguably the greatest pro "wrasslin" manager of all time.

I too was saddened to hear of the passing of Bobby “The Brain” Heenan, who was a genuine comedic genius.

I don’t think anyone will be even mildly surprised to learn that the promos - with their hilarious, over-the-top insults and verbose, hyperbolic self-aggrandisement - constituted my favourite aspect of pro wrestling. In my opinion, “The Brain” was one of the very top microphone men in the history of “sports entertainment”. As the Macho Man would say, Heenan was the “cream of the crop”, whose crackling wit, sublime delivery, and “classic” appearance and mannerisms placed him in the loftiest pantheon of pro wrestling immortals.

He was a terrific showman. I just read Classy Freddy Blassie's wrestling book. He was a heel wrestler and then became a famous heel manager, along with his two infamous contemporaries, The Grand Wizard (played by a jewish guy named Roth) and Captain Lou Albano.
