glad he got the extension but the wording of the article is essentially saying he is a bandaid for the running back situation lol He is a #1 rb anyday of the week.

Here's a great piece of news. Rex is old for a running back but has more tread on his tires than most due to hardly being used by Marvin X along with his tendency to get banged up a fair amount:

Texans signed RB Rex Burkhead to a one-year contract extension. Burkhead, 31, isn't a long-term answer for Houston's backfield but has proved serviceable while David Johnson (COVID) and Scottie Phillips (ankle) have been out, handling 103 carries and 17 catches in a workhorse role since Week 11. Burkhead's extension locks him up through the 2022 season.
I put the odds at about 5% or less, but it is possible than Burkhead’s career follows a John Riggins model. Now I’m not saying he’d be as good as Riggins, even if he got a chance, but simply that he’d be in his 30s when first given a starters role. We all know that White’s have great longevity, toughness and determination so it’s not impossible. The Texans would just have to believe in him.

I hadn't thought about that, but it's within the realm of possibility. Riggins' career started in the early 1970s, well before the NFL went hard-core Caste and he was an established star while White RBs and WRs were systematically phased out in the '80s, which made him a dinosaur by the time his long career ended in the mid-80s. Rex would need to play at a very high level, with few below-average games, and be more durable than he's been to have a shot at being a starter in his 30s. Would be cool as can be if it happens.

Glad to hear Rex will have his career extended at least one more year. I thought his knee injury last year was going to be the end of the line for him.

No running lanes in the final game for Rex. Still, given they didn’t utilize him until the last few weeks of the season him finishing with over 400 yds rushing is admirable.

I will say it again, give this man 200 carries a year and another 50 receptions and he will put up a 1300 yards from scrimmage season coupled with double digit touchdowns. All he needs is opportunity.

Rex has zero upside according to this DWF dolt:

Top Contenders: Marlon Mack vs. Dameon Pierce vs. Rex Burkhead

Any starting running back in the NFL has some value on opportunity alone. The Houston Texans backfield put that to the test last year with the worst run game in the league, but Rex Burkhead actually went over 10 points in PPR leagues in three of the last four games of the fantasy season last year. The Texans are still clearly in rebuild mode. However, the offensive line isn't terrible. They are ranked 22nd in PFF's preseason rankings and still have Laremy Tunsil at left tackle. If the 32-year-old Burkhead seizes the job, it will be a bit disappointing because the other two options have some upside on paper.

Pierce will culture some carries this year. Still, if he stays healthy, Rex should see over 100 attempts and around 40-50 receptions.

The curious case of Rex Burkhead. How and why is a 32 year old White running back still in the league, and a starter? He has a career 3.9 YPC. With over 600 touches (runs, receptions, and returns), his longest play is 36 yards. He doesn’t have elite size, speed, or moves. This is an era where a White player must be an all-pro to play a caste position. Far more talented backs, such as Ryan Nall and Zach Zenner, are barely given a cup of coffee in the league. Congratulations to Rex, he’s certainly a true professional, but it’s strange.

Rex is not flashy, but the kind of player that excels in all phases. What truly extended his career was Belichick and Brady (ie: great white Patriot teams). The Texans won’t feature him (case in point, today he receives zero Carrie’s), but they know the value he brings.

Rex doesn't have the size of Nall or the Size/Speed of Zenner.

He is a good all around back though. As an 8th grader, at 5'8, he was throwing down dunks in his hometown of Plano, Tx. Underrated Athlete in his own right.

I think so much of how a white player at a verboten position like running back achieves success is opportunity. Unfortunately, they are rarely given opportunity. Even when they are, and excel, they seem to be quickly relegated back to the bench. An example of this would be Zach Zenner, who excelled when thrust into starter-type of workloads against Dallas and Green Bay. However, as soon as the other backs were healthy/available he went back to the bench, even though he was demonstrably more productive.

So Rex is now worth not even a single carry in a game?

So it looks like Rex gets no more than a couple Carrie per game now. Mills also seems to only use his great receiving skills to catch 2 yard passes.

Honestly, the Texans are easy to figure out because Pierce is in an gets to run and when Rex comes in it is essentially for pass protection and little dump passes. Very predictable.

They should utilize an offense where both backs are on the field together and both get carries so defenses cannot key on anything.

There is absolutely zero reason why Rex Burkhead is getting no rushing attempts the last several weeks. While Pierce is a fine back, I’m not sure another team beyond the Texans gives their backup running back absolutely NO carries… heck, I’ve seen their WR get a couple token attempts each week.

The only logical explanation is the Texans do NOT want Rex Burkhead running the ball. Smith is a horrendous coach.

The lack of production (by way of lack of real opportunity) for Burkhead and McCaffrey is the biggest disappointment of a highly disappointing season so far.

Alright I figured this time would come at some point! Pierce is hurt and out at least one game; we should see Rex Burkhead get the majority of the carries. Here’s hoping it is at least 2-3 games and Rex can put some positive yardage on tape. I think he still offers a lot to a team that will actually use him in the rotation. He would be a great addition to the Bills backfield next year!

Unbelievable that the Texans under the black-supremacist Lovie Smith, would rather run quarterbacks and wide receivers versus the highly productive (when given the opportunity) Rex Burkhead. Another game with no rushing attempts and a couple dinky dump passes…

I hate Smith as much as any coach who has ever been in the NFL.

Rex Burkhead was brought in to work out for the Raiders. If Josh McDaniels had a brain he would sign Rex as insurance for Josh Jacobs. Rex has great familiarity with McDaniels’ scheme.

Good for Rex - hopefully, this comes to something. Plenty of tread on the tires due to years of underuse.

This Weenieworld clown, Patrick Daugherty, one of their top fantasy "experts," takes a gratuitous shot at Rex Burkhead. Of all the crap players on Houston last year the only one he mentions is the White RB (and I'm not agreeing that Rex was a crap player last year, more stuck on a team with crap sumos who couldn't open holes for him to run through).

31. Texans
This isn’t your grandfather-passed-out-asleep-at-2:22 PM ET-watching-the-2022-Texans Texans. There’s now a real coaching staff and a serious talent infusion. Rex Burkhead isn’t on the roster. That doesn’t change the fact that it’s a blind rebuild from a fantasy perspective, one including a rookie quarterback. It’s not implausible the No. 1 receiver could be sophomore John Metchie, who didn’t even play in 2022 as he recovered from illness. The upside isn’t just unknown, it’s likely unattainable in 2023.

Does anyone think he gets picked up in the next few weeks? He can still play very well and would be a great asset.

Well fellas,
Rex Burkhead is officially retired. A shame as he is clearly still better than some of the backup running backs littering rosters across the league.

He carved out a decent career considering the system was stacked against him. He should have been utilized more with the Bengals his first few years in the league, if I recall he made some big catches in a playoff game but the next year he did not get utilized enough. Glad he was able to win a Super Bowl with the Pats and replace Woodhead as the White RB on the Pats during the last few years of White friendly offenses. 10 Seasons in the league as a White RB is a pretty big accomplishment.

The Bengals kept drafting running backs and putting them ahead of Rex on the depth charts. All had careers no better than (or worse) than Rex’s.
