McGuffie is amazing. I've watched his Youtube Mix tape about 50 times. Outside of Barry Sanders there is no RB
that excites me more. McGuffie is certainly fast, but it's his initial burst that is absolutely jaw dropping and he cuts on a dime. Tom Lemming the top independent scout had McGuffie as the number 3 RB and #10 overall prospect in the land; now after an injury plagued season he is #3 RB and 29th overall. Rise Prep had him as the third best RB, now 5th. Scout.com had him at #5 but now 7th. Takkle.com still has McGuffie in the top 100 overall players.
I just don't get Rivals hate on this kid, it's like they're blind to his incredible talent. Rivals has McGuffie ranked as the 12th best All Purpose RB and about 30th overall at RB. McGuffie's YPC is third best out of all the All Purpose RBs ahead of him. McGuffie's SPARQ combine rating measurables are the tops in the "entire nation" for RBs. McGuffie's Jr. year was better than all RB prospects statistically w/ 4 stars or more other than Darrell Scott. McGuffie plays the best H.S competition in the land. I just have never understood Rivals rankings. They always shock me, but this one shocks me more than anything they've ever done. To top that off Rivals had Sam ranked as #1 Best in space and #2 Home Run threat, but not even in the top 250 players in the nation (just tell me how that makes any sense, it's not as if Sam doesn't have solid power, he has a 90 yard TD where he breaks about 9 tackles). Now as of "a mere 3 weeks ago", Sam has "magically" lost that rating and is no longer ranked for Best in Space and only #5 Homerun Run threat. How does a player magically lose his abilities? (must be that Rivals realized how ridiculous it looked to have a player ranked that way not in the top 250)
To top that off Rivals has a 5'7 165 lbs. midget Cameron Saddler ahead of McGuffie at RB who ran for a very paltry 5.3 YPC against weak western Pennsylvania H.S competition JR. year. Saddler has a paltry 28 inch vertical and a 4.44 40 time compared to Sam's 4.32 40 time, 41-43 inch vert, and mind boggling 3.83 short shuttle, which if ran at the NFL combine would be shades away from the record. This year "in his best year by far" Saddler only ran for 1700 yards on 7.3 YPC compared to Sam's 2000+ yards on 8.3 YPC while playing with a nagging injury all year. And McGuffie ran absolutely buck wild in this years playoffs. Rivals just makes absolutely no sense.

Sam McGuffie is currently ranked as the 5th best RB for the 2012 college class by nfldraftscout.com. World renowned scout Tom Lemming still has McGuffie as his #3 RB for the 2008 H.S class. This guy is gonna be incredible at Michigan. Forget what stupid Rivals says. My Wolverines are getting a gem in Sam "the Matrix" McGuffie. Google "Chan" "McGuffie" for a good article and "Logic Times" "McGuffie" for another.

I responded: Actually it's just the opposite, it's his acceleration that gives him a faster 40 time. Without the jaw dropping acceleration he is probably a 4.4-4.45 guy instead of a 4.32 guy. He is certainly fast, but it's his acceleration that is totally off the charts. I worked briefly in the scouting department at Rutgers and I made the Michigan Wolverine team in the 80s as a backup safety. I also played RB in H.S., so you could say I know a little something about scouting. McGuffie gets up to top speed as fast or faster than anyone I've "ever" seen. I would guess he runs an insane 1.42 10 yard dash or so. He also has the Rivals record, a 3.83 in the short shuttle, which proves his elite acceleration and change of direction ability. I believe the NFL combine record in the short shuttle is 3.75 by WR Kevin Kasper, who did nothing in the NFL b/c of injury problems.
McGuffie has amazing agility, he's a poor mans Barry Sanders which is still quite a compliment. He also has "solid" leg drive when he runs. He needs to work on blocking and sometimes being a little less risky and creative to get yards when there is absolutely nothing there. He'll reverse his field and run parallel a little too often when lowering his shoulder to punish the tackler could be his best option. But that is also the reason why he is so good and is such a home-run threat. He'll get stopped per season more times for losses than most in college, but then break off a 70 yard TD run.
He also needs to be careful about hurdling in college. With his agility, he doesn't need to do that stuff in college unless he is running straight through a hole and has no room to juke and a tackler dives at his legs. I think he hurdled in H.S a bit b/c it was fun and he thought it was a good way to build media hype for him to get attention. It sure worked, his Youtube vid has about 2 million views.

I just read a ridiculous scouting report by ESPN Scouts Inc. on McGuffie. It said "McGuffie is an interesting player to study because so many of his traits lead you to believe he is a blue-collar overacheiver, but his blend of sensational speed and change-of-direction skills say otherwise." They then say "however, without question, McGuffie is a straight-lined guy" "He is also not as smooth or fluid as many other top backs in this class. Takes too long to gather to put together moves." Then they say "he hits the hole with great burst and will immediately bounce plays to the sideline where he can use his speed to outrun defenders. He runs low, is shifty and very difficult to get a clean shot at."
The ridiculous of calling McGuffie a straight lined guy who takes too long to put together his moves is just shocking. When I see McGuffie juke in his video highlights, he plants his leg (sometimes both legs) and can just bounce sideways. Maybe the reason it takes him a second "to put together his moves" is that he can stop his momentum when going at full speed and completely bounce in the other direction. That takes a second to do. You can see it in his highlight tape when he literally is running at full speed at a 45 degree angle from the line of scrimmage and then all the sudden he plants his leg and bounces and he is running at a 45 degree angle in the opposite direction. The defender is taken completely out of the play.
I guess ESPN didn't get the hint from his highlight video or from his 3.83 short shuttle. Hey, at least Rivals who ranks McGuffie lower than ESPN ranked Sam #1 Best in space last summer and #2 Home run threat and in the top 100 last year before magically dropping him out of the top 250 this year. I guess Rivals problem with McGuffie is his lack of power and leg drive. Don't see how two scouting sites can find something "completely opposite" about a player.

Yeah McGuffie is amazing and as a Wolverine fan I hope Rich Rod realizes that what assistant coach Fred Jackson is saying is the truth, that this kid needs to see the field a lot as a Freshman. I know Michigan has a lot of talented RBs on the team (some who've had injury problems and haven't been able to live up to potential), but Sam has the most talent and upside by far. Sam needs to see at least as many carries as Noel Divine saw last season for WVU, but probably more b/c Michigan has no proven Slaton. If they play Sam he is going to impress and he will earn more playing time. I honestly think if the coaching staff utilizes and teaches Sam correctly he'll be Michigan's starter by next season.

3.83 shuttle says otherwise. if you saw him on tv for the first time, it's not an indicator of how he has been running when healthy. he played on a bad ankle(not sprained but ligament tear) that limit his speed/acceleration and he played with a supposedly a separated shoulders.Edited by: ToughJ.Riggins
