I don't mean to sound like a pro-caste pessimist. However, I think that there is about a 0.1 second difference in the top times elite whites and elite blacks can run in the 100 meters.
My theory is that it has to do with blacks having slightly longer legs "on average" for their size than whites and slightly longer calves on average. Whites tend to have stronger quads on average. Whites have an equal if not better initial burst on average b/c of this, but whites tend to have an ever so slightly lower top speed.
I have gotten this sense from watching the legs of black and white runners. The black runners seem to run more springy. I don't buy the loose hip theory of RBs at all, but I do get the sense that blacks run more jittery.
The other evidence that supports my theory is that whites tend to do better in short shuttles and 3 cones where starting and slowing momentum is important, that would indicate stronger quad muscles. I don't know how this would fit into vertical jumping which whites tend to be equally good as blacks at, but for broad jumping and long jumping blacks do tend to excel better than whites.
I agree with you Colonel though that there is a lot of brainwashing of whites that track is a black sport and many become discouraged to try other interests. I think we could see a clean white run a 9.9 one day, but I don't see a white running a 9.73 in my lifetime. I am just trying to be a realist, as to not disappoint myself.
The difference is small enough though that we should be seeing whites make the 100 meter finals occasionally. If a white man in my lifetime ever wins 100 meter Gold, I will be thrilled. That would be a shocker to the caste system. The problem is that most of the top 100 meter and 200 meter guys are juicing. I don't think Pickering is juicing and that puts him at even more a disadvantage. Edited by: ToughJ.Riggins
