Basketball is the most popular sport in Lithuania. Latvia I believe both hockey and basketball are bigger than soccer. They are two of the only countries in Europe where soccer is not king.
Thanks for the info Matra, much appreciated. My original point was imagine if the state of Connecticut (similar size to Lithuania) had to put together a basketball team for the Olympics and only natives of the state could play on this team, coached by the odious 70 year-old wigger Jim Buffoon. You'd probably have nearly 40 year old Marcus Camby and teen Andre Drummond, plus 10 other blacks (as whites need not apply with James). Now, even though these blacks are reportedly "very special athletes", do you think Buffoon could assemble a team from Connecticut that could lose by less than 20 or 30 points to a "Dream Team"? I seriously doubt it.
Yet, somehow, someway, a very small, all-white nation can build a hoops squad that can go nose-to-nose with Lebron, Shaq, Kobe, Duncan, Melo and all these other Kosher approved stars year after year. They lost by a mere 2 points to the U.S in 2000. Beat the U.S in 2004....
Lithuania has like 1/100th of the U.S population. I wonder how our "Dream Team" would've fared if there where over 200 million Lithuanians, which would be similar to the white American population? Could King James and his crew even stay within 20 points of the Lithuanians? I seriously doubt it.
P.S: By the way, this is were I miss CF poster Zeus. I would love to read what he had to say regarding this whole situation in men's basketball.
