Matakevich Named Steelers’ Surprise Offseason Standout By ESPN

All 32 NFL teams are wrapping up their offseason programs and that means the summer break is upon us. Now that all 32 NFL teams are breaking before the start of training camp, the team beat writers at ESPN.com have attempted to identify the surprise offseason standouts from the team that each covers.

Jeremy Fowler, who covers the Pittsburgh Steelers for ESPN, chose inside linebacker Tyler Matakevich as his surprise offseasion standout from the team and he writes:

Throughout OTAs, Matakevich assumed the starting inside linebacker job opposite Vince Williams. The free-agent signing of Jon Bostic hasn’t fazed Matakevich, who is holding him off in an attempt to replace Ryan Shazier. The former seventh-round pick doesn’t have great speed, but he has the instincts for the position and plays with an edge. He has shown that this offseason.

Fowler’s choice of Matakevich is certainly understandable and especially when you consider that veteran inside linebacker Jon Bostic, who was signed as an unrestricted free agent in March, was expected to receive a lot of the first-team reps during the offseason practices.

On the surface, however, perhaps we shouldn’t be so surprised that Matakevich has “held off” Bostic during the team’s offseason practices. After all, Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert sang the praises of the team’s former seventh-round draft pick out of Temple all spring and even after Bostic was signed. Additionally, Matakevich would have been the starter last season after Ryan Shazier went down injured had he not suffered a shoulder injury earlier in the year that essentially limited him to only playing on special teams.

My theory on Matakevich this offseason is that he is viewed as the incumbent and that Bostic must take the starting job away from him between now and the start of the regular season. With Bostic being new and likely still trying to learn the defense inside and out, it explains why he is likely entering the summer break period behind Matakevich. Should Bostic ultimately be unable to overtake Matakevich by the time the regular season gets underway, then perhaps one has to wonder why the former second-round draft pick was even signed in the first place.

The Vikings also signed Jake Wieneke. One of the fantasy sites I subscribe to has Jake as the 77th ranked rookie even though he wasn't drafted. It would be great if Minnesota becomes a second outpost that consistently treats White receivers fairly, and also remains a top NFC team. If another team finally "copies" what the Patriots are doing in a supposed "copycat league" and thrives, maybe one or two other "courageous" organizations will do the same.

So far Dylan Cantrell has been able to hold the Caste hounds at bay who want the Chargers to beef him up and play tight end:

Q: I have heard that Dylan Cantrell has a great set of hands and can block good. What is the possibility of “beefing” him up and temporarily using him as a tight end in Hunter Henry’s absence this year? – Scott Cochran

A: This has been bandied about by fans, but GM Tom Telesco put the kibosh on it during a recent live chat:

“I have heard this thought from a couple people. Not a bad idea thinking outside the box. Dylan is 6'3" 225. But right now, we are very excited for him as a WR. That is the position we think his future is at.”

I like this assessment of Cantrell from a fantasy site which ranked him after the draft as the 67th best rookie, which indicates a possible way to relevance sooner rather than later. It would be great to see him emerge in a year or two as one of Philip Rivers' favorite targets: "67(70). Dylan Cantrell, WR, LAC - While the Chargers are strong four deep at wide receiver, Cantrell is a different type, with excellent blocking and ability to win on contested balls. His athletic testing numbers indicate more there to mine in the pros, Tyrell Williams is a free agent next year, Travis Benjamin is due over five million next year, Mike Williams already has an achy back."

Draft analyst Nolan Nawrocki seems to have fallen off the face of the earth. He used to be prominent among draft analysts now he's nowhere to be seen. What happened?

I remember he took a lot of heat for his criticisms of the attitudes of black quarterbacks Cam Newton and Gino Smith, criticisms which proved to be accurate. He was accused of "racism."

I wonder if this had something to do with his disappearance.

Former Buffalo Bills general manager Doug Whaley is taking over as the NFL Players Association's director of college scouting.

Whaley will oversee the recruitment, evaluation and selection of draft-eligible prospects to compete at the annual NFLPA Collegiate Bowl. He replaces Tony Softli, who left to become the Alliance of American Football's scouting director.

The Cowboys' starting TE job is completely up for grabs following Jason Witten's retirement. The early talk favored Rico Gathers of the magical race, but lately Blake Jarwin has been getting favorable coverage.

Other interesting TE situations to watch are in Detroit and Seattle. I expect Luke Willson to become one of Matt Stafford's favorite targets, and Nick Vannett has the talent to become the Seahawks' starter, though the Caste media claims both are in battles with blacks for playing time. Here's a blurb on Jarwin:

Blake Jarwin has the chance to earn significant playing time for the Cowboys this season now that Jason Witten has retired. He appeared in one game in 2017 but has yet to catch the ball in the NFL. Still, with Witten gone, the Cowboys now have a need for someone to step up, and Jarwin will compete with Geoff Swaim, Rico Gathers and Dalton Schultz for a prominent role. Keep an eye on Jarwin in training camp, and he could be worth a late-round flier in deeper leagues.

Anus Winston has been suspended three games for a sexual assault of a female uber driver. Hilarious stuff - the Bucs knew what they were getting when they took this moron number 1 overall - he had a track record - the rape accusation in college, stealing and the immaturity - yet he still went number one overall. Since he has been in the league we have seen a repeat offense of sexual assault and his lack of maturity/impulse control (low IQ on display. Jameez is looking more and more like a bust/flame out. I thought that the Bucs would for sure draft an insurance policy after Winston's play has not matched up to his number 1 draft status. Compare his treatment to that of Goff who was written off after 6 or 7 starts in 2016 only to come out last year and look like a perennial pro bowler. Anus has not had anywhere near the amount of negative press in his 3 seasons in the league that Goff had to endure after his first season in the league.


ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Jameis Winston will be suspended three games for violating the league's personal-conduct policy.

Per Schefter, the league "still has not notified Winston of its official decision," and "the circumstances surrounding it still could lead to an increase or decrease of the three games." The ban is the result of Winston's alleged March 2016 groping of an Uber driver. He was not charged with a crime in the incident. The timing is devastating for the Bucs, who will travel to New Orleans in Week 1 before hosting the Eagles and Steelers in back-to-back weeks. As coach Dirk Koetter coaches for his job, he will be doing so with Ryan Fitzpatrick under center. The expected ban is a mammoth blow to Winston's fantasy value. He had been looking like a value pick as the QB19 according to Fantasy Football Calculator. Fitzpatrick's presence under center doesn't really affect the outlook for players like Mike Evans and Cameron Brate. Fitz loves to throw with the best of them.

Bears' Nick Kwiatkoski was a top-5 inside linebacker in 2017

The Chicago Bears selected inside linebacker Roquan Smith in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft with the expectation that he'll become an immediate starter and impact player on defense. But, was there a need at inside linebacker?

According to Pro Football Focus, Nick Kwiatkoski, who Chicago selected in the fourth round of 2016's draft, was a standout performer last season. He ranked third in the NFL among inside linebackers in run-stop percentage and was fourth-best in pass-rush productivity.

Kwiatkoski also wasn’t tagged for a missed tackle against the run all season. He still has to share time on the field with Danny Trevathan and newly-drafted Roquan Smith, but should be able to capitalize on a great sophomore year after being drafted in the fourth round from West Virginia in 2016. Overall, Kwiatoski was graded as the NFL’s 12th best inside linebacker, higher than both Spaight and Hitchens.

His 21.0 pass-rush productivity ranked fourth and came on the heels of his rookie season in which he ranked 10th in the same category in 2016.

Kwiatkoski didn't receive much fanfare last season but the analytics speak for themselves. He started six games (appeared in 11) and registered career highs in tackles (34) and sacks (two). He's an ascending player but his growth is likely to be stunted by Smith's presence.

Chicago could view Kwiatkoski as the heir to Danny Trevathan's starting job. The Bears can move on from Trevathan with little consequence at season's end. His dead cap number drops to just $1.25 million in 2019. Kwiatkoski will be in the final year of his contract that season (2019), and if he hasn't earned a starting job by then, he's a near lock to sign elsewhere when his rookie contract expires.

Kwiatkoski has proven he can produce when given a chance to play, something 31 other teams have certainly taken notice of.

I was really interested to see what the Bears did in the draft - as is the case with pretty much every other team they ultimately ended up disappointing. They passed on potential 10 year starter LT Mike McGlinchey to protect Trubisky's blind side - they could of traded down and picked up Kolton Miller or Taven Bryan as well. Instead as Don pointed out they decide to draft an undersized LB when they already had a young talented player at the position (who happened to be white). The only worthwhile thing they did was sign Ryan Nall as a UDFA.

The Bears roster is very indicitive of what is wrong the with the NFL - lots of blacks filling the depth chart based on race rather than skill. Their WR, OT, LB and S positions are all laughable.

Jordy's curse? Or maybe Jeff Janis's curse. Randall Cobb is the only other NFL quality receiver the Packers have left besides Davante Adams and Cobb's been in decline for several years and despite all the accolades being given Adams he still has yet to exceed 1,000 yards in a season. There are reports that Aaron Rodgers wants an "opt out" clause put into the new contract he's negotiating with Green Bay. I can see why, as he probably senses the team's downturn last year was the beginning of a trend rather than a one season fluke occurrence.

When the Green Bay Packers open up training camp next month, there's a chance that Randall Cobb won't be on the field. Apparently, the Packers receiver suffered an ankle injury at some point over the past three weeks, although no one seems to know when or how it happened. As a matter of fact, the only reason we know about the injury now is because Cobb was spotted by a reporter at an airport on Sunday and the receiver was wearing a walking boot on his right ankle.

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Cobb wouldn't reveal whether or not he underwent surgery on his ankle. However, the Packers receiver did say that the boot was "temporary." Cobb added to the ankle mystery on Sunday when he conveniently cropped out the bottom of everyone's legs in a picture that he shared to Instagram. As you can see below, the photo featured Cobb, Jordy Nelson and Aaron Rodgers.

A couple of articles on Steelers rookie QB Mason Rudolph. He's a really likable and talented kid. I hope he is able to become Ben's heir apparent or this becomes another Jimmy G situation. The 2004 draft was the first one I followed closely and I see alot of similarities between Roethlisberger when he came out and Rudolph. I caught many of Rudolph's games and he is a great thrower of the deep ball - the questions about the transition from college to the pro offense are very similar to Ben's - mostly about playing out of the shotgun and transitioning to playing under center.

There wasn't much football news coming out of Weenieworld today, however it's rarely a slow day when it comes to chronicling the criminality of the NFL's current and former players.

Former Seahawks CB Brandon Browner was arrested for kidnapping, burglary, false imprisonment, and violation of a restraining order on Sunday. Browner allegedly broke into a home and refused to let the woman inside, who has a restraining order against him, leave Sunday morning in La Verne, California. He also allegedly physically harmed and threatened to kill the woman. Browner was arrested for cocaine possession last May and for making criminal threats last September. He has been out of the league since the Seahawks released him in August of 2016.

Former Lions TE Brandon Pettigrew was arrested for aggravated assault, theft of services, and public drunkenness on Monday in Pittsburgh. Pettigrew allegedly got into a confrontation with a limousine driver over a $97 fare. When the police arrived, Pettigrew allegedly was visibly intoxicated and refused to identify himself before allegedly punching an officer three times in the chest. Out of the league since being waived in December of 2016, Pettigrew was arrested for public drunkenness and disorderly conduct in Oklahoma last February.

Cowboys CB Marquez White was arrested on June 15 for second-degree felony assault with a deadly weapon in Collin County, Texas. White said the incident stems from a "road-rage" dust-up that occurred last October. White was allegedly heading home and exiting a tollway when another man tried to speed by him on the service road. White felt his "life was threatened," then pulled a gun he legally owned. White was not arrested until June. A sixth-round pick in last year's draft, White spent 2017 on the Cowboys' practice squad and re-signed a reserve/future deal in January.
