The "dearth of talent" at QB mirrors the awful caliber of play at every position in today's NFL. Also, there is no doubt in my mind that some obviously more gifted QBs (Heath Shuler, Cade McNown, Tim Couch, etc.) were given little chance to succeed in the NFL while derelict blacks like Rodney Peete, Tony Banks and too many others to remember enjoyed long, lucrative careers despite clearly having no ability to play at the professional level. Also, white QBs with less skill, like Kent Graham, Neil O'Donnell, etc., have similar lengthy careers despite being obviously less talented than the McNowns and Couchs of the world. Gus Frerotte is a perfect example of this kind of mediocre white QB. It's almost like the league purposefully advances the careers of these less talented white QBs in order to bring the level of play at the position down to the level of most black QBs.
But I thoroughly agree that the media is fixated on this "lack of talent" at the QB position, to the exclusion of all others, simply because that's where most of the white players are. In a just world, the first position to be upgraded would be, as Don indicated, the wide receivers, where the level of play is simply abominable. But don't expect to see that issue addressed on the next episode of "Outside The Lines."
