NFL in another "quarterback crisis"?

Remember that one from last season? Or was it two seasons ago? The sports media was talking about a quarterback crisis.

A few more starters go down, and another few games with no great play by a black quarterback, and the sports media may start talking about this again.

I just heard Ron Jaworski on ESPN mention a "dearth of talent" at the QB position.

The Sporting News seems to run a cover article on this made up nonsense every year. I'm still waiting to get a TSN witha picture ofa ball clanking off Darrell Jackson's hands accompanied by theheadline "HANDS OF STONE -- Why Are There So Few Wide Receivers Who Can Catch?"

The "dearth of talent" at QB mirrors the awful caliber of play at every position in today's NFL. Also, there is no doubt in my mind that some obviously more gifted QBs (Heath Shuler, Cade McNown, Tim Couch, etc.) were given little chance to succeed in the NFL while derelict blacks like Rodney Peete, Tony Banks and too many others to remember enjoyed long, lucrative careers despite clearly having no ability to play at the professional level. Also, white QBs with less skill, like Kent Graham, Neil O'Donnell, etc., have similar lengthy careers despite being obviously less talented than the McNowns and Couchs of the world. Gus Frerotte is a perfect example of this kind of mediocre white QB. It's almost like the league purposefully advances the careers of these less talented white QBs in order to bring the level of play at the position down to the level of most black QBs.

But I thoroughly agree that the media is fixated on this "lack of talent" at the QB position, to the exclusion of all others, simply because that's where most of the white players are. In a just world, the first position to be upgraded would be, as Don indicated, the wide receivers, where the level of play is simply abominable. But don't expect to see that issue addressed on the next episode of "Outside The Lines."

Your analysis is spot on, and I truly appreciate the clarity of it.

There is no doubt in my mind that the "aged" QB Trent Green was brought to Miami to be the fall guy; he was put in an impossible situation to absorb the HATE and heat for the failures of a franchise that Nick "the anti-White prick" Saban --- has set back 10 years.

When I know they are setting up a White Man, those are times that I want them to start the mediocre or "promising" black QB. I say why not? The very dark Dolphins' might as well have started Cleo Lemon from game 1. If he's the QB of the future that they're grooming, he can use the experience in a season that was never going to amount to anything, anyway.

**Note -- I've never observed or analyzed Lemon, but that would have been preferable to seeing YET another White veteran being obviously set up.**

I never really thought of it that way, but Bigunreal made a really good point about crappy white QB's hanging around while guys that were high end draft picks that weren't given the proper time to develop (Ryan Leaf, Heath Schuler, Cade McNown) were shown the door and were ran out of the NFL.

As for the Dolphins. Look for rookie John Beck to take over after Cleo Lemon is done stinking up the joint. Beck might be their only chance of Miami not going 0-16

They ought to look instead at the dearth of talent at receiver and O-line. Those two things can break a QB, no matter how good he is, especially when so many are black.

The sports media can bemoan non-facts as often as they like, but Peyton Manning and Tom Brady are the two best quarterbacks on the planet, at the height of their athletic prime and having great seasons, and nothing short of a black crack goon shooting either man in the throwing arm can change that.

SI weighs in on the "dearth of talent" at quarterback.

How will the league survive without black supermen throwing the ball?

Did anyone else catch racist Tom Jackson on MNF preview show flat out say that since Atlanta has a large Black fanbase, that Michael Vick is going to be difficult to replace?

Can you imagine a White commentator saying something along the lines of, since Minnesota has a large White fanbase Brad Johnson (sorry, been a while since they have had a true star White) is going to be difficult to replace? Just another sad double standard that is right out there for everyone to see, yet so many refuse to.

I don't like much of what Don Banks has to say, but it's not all bad. It seems to me that he is saying that Brown's QB Derek Anderson is good. And, it is actually admirable that he is taking himself to task for being one of the Start-Quinn-Now mob who must now keep quiet, at least on that topic. How many of the other writers will actually admit to being wrong?

Cleveland -- After wasting little time ending the team's misguided Frye era, the Browns deserve credit for inserting Derek Anderson and thumbing their noses at the Start-Quinn-Now crowd (of which I was a charter member). Anderson's game has been good enough for him to throw 13 touchdown passes in his five starts, winning three times. Even more impressively, the mantra in Cleveland is now Brady who?

Leftwhich is starting at QB in week 7

it will be fun to see them tank the rest of the season, if the wr's couldnt catch Harrington's catchable ball they sure wont be able to catch Leftwhich's fastball because thats all he throws, he has not concept of touch on a pass or ball placement, he just throws it hard as he can and I hope he gets destroyed behind that o-line with his terrible elongated delivery.

Geez, it's ridiculous how fast Atlanta is inserting Leftwich into the lineup. He's already being touted as Atlanta's next savior. Harrington is also a young QB, like Leftwich and deserves a chance to show what he's got. Harrington has been playing solid thus far. If you guys read my other post in the week 6 thread I admitted that it may have been legitimate, if Atlanta keeps sucking till the last 4 games of the season or so, to put in Leftwich, but now NO!

I have no problem with Harrington going to the bench. I don't think Crapwich is much better but Harrington is a proven bust. He is the rare white player who has been given chance after chance. He's been the starter on three teams now.

Harrington this season has 4 TD to 4 INT, a completion percentage of 63%, and a quarterback rating of 80.3.

For comparison purposes, Jason Campbell, the newest elite black quarterback in the league, has a passer rating of 81.1.

Joey has a better quarterback rating than:

Steve McNair
Jay Cutler
Trent Edwards
Vince Young
Alex Smith
Drew Brees
Marc Bulger
Matt Leinart
Tarvaris Jackson,

all of whom are or were starting quarterbacks in the NFL. Where is the hue and cry to bench Tarvaris Jackson, who is the worst quarterback in the league? Vince Young has thrown 3 TD but SIX INT. But that's right.. he's a leader!

In Leftwich's last six starts, he posted a quarterback rating of 79.0. Huge improvement over Joey. No..wait.. 81.3 > 79.0. Math is hard!

Before you say it, I know there is more to the position than quarterback rating, but it can certainly tell us that Leftwich is no big improvement over Harrington.

Honestly, I don't know why anyone thinks Joey's benching has anything to do with his performance. The Atlanta fans want a black quarterback, and Leftwich is it. The Falcons jettisoned Schaub and signed Harrington as a shlub who wouldn't cause a quarterback controversy. Lo and behold, Vick is out and now they have to bench Joey ASAP before they have a controversy anyway, because that damn doofy white dude went and actually turned into a halfway decent quarterback.

The real shame is that with all those QB injuries, Billy volek is riding the pine behind Phillip Rivers, when he could be starting for any number of teams. Meanwhile black scrubs get chance after chance...

p.s. let's not forget that Joey lost his last job to another black savior quarterback who oh yeah, that's right, got dumped at the end of the season along with Joey. That team is now starting Cleo Lemon, I bet they wish they had old Joey Harrington back on the roster now. Maybe they could blame him for going 0-5.

Harrington quarterbacked the Detroit Lions, who still blow without him.

Harrington quarterbacked the Miami Dolphins, who still blow without him and are actually worse this year than last.

Harrington quarterbacked the Atlanta Falcons, who were blowing before he got there and will continue to do so under Leftwich.

Somewhere down the line, all these personnel managers have to stop blaming Joey Harrington because their teams are sh*t, and sign some other football players.

If you look at the QB situation in the league my theory is it can be blamed on the college game. Alot of schools play mediocre black qbs who do not have great arms or intelligence and run spread offenses. They rely on running the ball more than anything.

The one and only reason Joey Harrington got benched was because of black locker room rebellion. It's a dirty little secret that is so obvious it screams, "Here's your sign." What does anyone think all the lockeroom complaining was really about anyway? Seriously. Several players speak out against the coaches followed by a game with several dropped balls and horrible pass protection virtually on every single pass play. Geez, I wonder why????

It's very predictable that Joey Harrington is the fall guy for the woeful Falcons. Anyone who watched their game last Monday night, and thinks Harrington is the problem there, knows nothing about football. Like David Carr in Houston, who was hit so often he is now probably permanently shell-shocked, Harrington has taken a real beating behind some woeful offensive lines. If Atlanta's all black receiving corps continues to drop balls at the rate they did in the last game, expect the media to note it constantly, just as they did whenever one of them dropped the rare Mike/Michael Vick pass that was on target. The only time black WRs are called out for their obvious lack of skills is when a black QB is throwing to them.

I feel awful for Joey Harrington. He might as well join Heath Shuler, Ryan Leaf, Tim Couch, Cade McNown, etc. wherever all those white QB "busts" spend their time after being discarded by the NFL. David Carr will be right behind him. The lame, wannabe comedians on ESPN are having a field day with the performance of Vinny Testaverde last weekend, and contrasting it with the struggles of David Carr, who are they all collectively about to offically declare another white "bust."

What's perhaps most incredible about this story is the fact that the Falcons have publicly stated that Leftwich is the "permanent" starter. When was the last time that happened? So, let's just assume for argument's sake that perhaps the Falcons are a mediocre team with little talent anywhere, and that Leftwich's pedestrian career stats are indicative of a less than stellar QB. If that's true, then he will undoubtedly make little if any difference on the field. So...how long will he get before he is yanked? Something tells me it will be more than 5 games, especially if he plays as well as Harrington did in a few of them. Contrast this with the Buffalo situation, where they apparently want to have a continuing competition, and realize that J.P. Losman is still young and clearly cannot be labeled a "bust" yet. Also, more importantly, Trent Edwards is not black. That make a huge difference. Also, Panthers Coach John Fox has given no vote of confidence to David Carr, and clearly is putting the kind of pressure on him that his coaches in Houston did. It really does seem like these teams conspire to screw over these highly-drafted white QBs.
