02.04.06 - By Chris Acosta: That was one of the many sarcastic quotes from one of the Naked Gun movies played by the hilariously deadpan Leslie Nielson. And at the time of the film which played in the early 90's, it was a fairly accurate quote too. Having gotten into boxing in the early 80's, I was intrigued by the absence of white fighters competing at the elite level. I remember Bobby Czyz and Ray Mancini but they were always a level below the very best. Barry McGuigan and Stevie Collins were unbreakable but each showed limitations against quicker boxers. Tommy Morrison was the only Caucasian heavyweight contender out there and while he had the hand speed, power and heart of a real contender, he was also saddled with a chin ricketier than a row of dominos next to a railroad track, the stamina of a smoker and sloppy defense.

Never bet against the Russians!! Ask Hitler and Napoleon! The comrades have all but taken over the heavyweight class. Peter McNeely and others like him made White Heavyweights a laughing stock. We had about 1 or 2 good heavyweights per decade since Marciano retired in 1956. Quarry, Cooney, Morrison were good but could never win the big fights. THEN THE RUSSIANS CAME!! The Eastern Europeans showed a toughness we have not seen in the ring for 50 years. The cold war never got hot because Eisenhower knew the Russians don't role over and play dead-you hit one in the mouth and you get hit back even harder and they don't cry over a bloody nose. These MEN from Eastern Europe put the gonads back on the White man in boxing.
Now American Whites like Fields, Mesi, Minto, Chapman and Kaufman are doing well in the heavyweight division. After Two World Wars, Famine, Communist Goverment,Food Storage, Bad Weather and a diet of cabbage and vodka, this men are not going to let some colored boys keep them from the good life there fathers/grandfathers never had.
They are also well educated and very athletic. We knew from the Olympics these men were great athletes in such a wide range of sports and when the Berlin Wall came down it was just a matter of time before they made such an impact on boxing. We support you our White Eastern European Brothers, you have showed us we need fear no one and gave us back our pride!!!
